Dripping Swag My research paper is over the career of Fashion Design. I chose this topic, because I have always had a desire to one day have my own clothing line and see other people support me by wearing my creations. Also because I like to mix different articles of clothing and create my own unique style to go out and express to the world. This paper will highlight the details about a fashion designer, like what type of education you need, skills required, the work environment, and their salaries. Fashion Design is a career where people express and use their creative ideas to create the best clothing on the market. For many of years the practice of changing the style of clothing has become common around the world. Fashion Designing has been around for many years “People wore garments to help them maintain body temperatures, dress design became a profession around the 1600’s” (“Fashion Designers”). The clothing business really started to escalate when the sewing machine was founded back in the day, designing clothes hasn’t been the same ever since. Education is not heavily looked upon in the field of Fashion Design. One article claims that “You can be successful without going to high school.” (Vogt. Peter). A student who does attend high school should take courses that express creativity like drawing, art, or even computer aided design. This would benefit them and give designers a head start. After graduating students, should attend a good 2-4 year school for fashion design, because companies prefer to hire a fashion designer with a strong 4 year education. (Clark, “Fashion Designers”). Although Fashion Designing doesn’t require much education, it’s always good to have some education, especially coming into a competitive field like fashion design. When people hear the job Fashion Designers, they think about the rich celebrities or huge runway shows in front of big crowds. They think about glamorous dresses and the model like girls posing in front of flashing cameras. But little do they know that not many fashion designers are that successful or get that type of recognition for their work. You have to work hard and work your way up to be a big time designer. “Most fashion designers come out of college and are hired as assistant designers. Assistants must prove their ability before being entrusted with the responsible job of the designer” (“Fashion Designers”). Designers salaries depend on the there work, skill level, and sometimes where they work at. Also the salary money they make depends on the rate the consumer is buying your product. “You can make $200 to $250 a day, but a independent stylist can make even more like $300 to $350 a day which adds up to around 100,000 annually”,( Vogt, Peter. "Fashion Stylist.") . The ones who persevere and are determined to make great clothing are the ones whose clothes are advertised in different stores, worn in runways and are paid big bucks.
Fashion designers have to have a passion for what they do. They can’t just design anything; they have to design something that they know will catch the consumer’s eyes. They make clothing for every gender, every age, and in every color. Designers have to know what the new trends are and they have to know that they change day to day. This is where designers do there research on past and future trends. So every day they have to create new things for the future cause these trends don’t last long. They also create hype for their clothing, which means they have to get people excited for their up and coming products and have everybody talking about the designer’s clothes. Designers put so much work into their clothing. But most people don’t even recognize how much detail or even what kind of material the designer uses to create the article. Often time’s people just buy a certain piece of clothing because it’s what everybody else is wearing and it’s the new fad, they really don’t respect the time and effort the designer has put into the design, even more so they buy them just for the label associated with the article of the clothing. All these things you have to understand and try to master to become successful.
Fashion Designing is a very cutthroat and limited job, so there isn’t much room for new designers to get hired. One article states that, “The fashion design world is highly competitive, so it's somewhat difficult, though certainly not impossible, to break into the field. In general, there are more aspiring fashion designers than there are available jobs in the field”. (Vogt, Peter. "Fashion Designer."). Employment rates are not very high, so you have to be on top of your game. According to (Vogt. Peter “fashion Design”) about 17,000 people worked as Fashion Designers in the United States in 2004, and now today approximately 22,700 fashion designers are employed in the United States. (“Fashion Designers”). So there is not much change in the employment rate over the years.
A person who is willing to work day in and day night and work countless hours can make it in this fierce fashion industry. One who has a creative and intriguing mind, and one who thinks outside of the box is one who can become successful. You have to express your passion and use your culture to design the best clothing on the market. Try and be original don’t imitate someone else’s design let your mind free and create a masterpiece. In this industry there is no relaxing, because everyday there is someone who is working hard to try and take your spot. So you have to stay on top of business and maintain composure in the crazy work environment. If you don’t you can break down and be replaced. Work for today and design for tomorrow.

Challenges Facing the Fashion Industry in Ghana

...CHAPTER ONE BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY The environment in which the fashion industry operates the world over has become turbulent, unpredictable and therefore, difficult to exert managerial control. Cultures around the world are constantly influencing each other; hence, the world’s cultures are changing fashion constantly. Also, social, economic, political and legal factors keep changing than before. Competition in the fashion industry is so rife such that the survival of fashion organizations cannot be guaranteed (Stuart, 1995). During the last decade, the developments of new technologies all over the world and growing globalization of countries economies have produced the fastest changes ever. The fashion industry in Ghana, especially, the clothing sub sector (which is the focus of this study) has not been without the effect of economic, political, social, cultural and legal pressures brought to bear on all organizations. In recent years, protectionism has given way to globalization. With that change, Ghanaian clothing sector of the fashion industry has had to compete with imports from low wage countries. Retailers, unencumbered by protectionism, have also seized on the opportunity, often choosing to go directly to offshore manufacturers. As retailers become larger and more globally connected, they continue to build global brands marketed around the world. In doing so, they eliminate many Ghanaian clothing companies from their supply chain. The result has been major market...

Alexander Mcqueen

...said. (Wilson and Horyn, 2010) He has been countering controversy as headlines hailed him since 1992, the year when he first burst into the fashion world. Even though Alexander McQueen was often misunderstood, he was successful in establishing his own fashion label that is now internationally acclaimed and desirable without compromising his approach towards fashion. From the start of his career Lee made his viewers with the feeling of awe or wonder or fear or terror with raw presentation of depicting bleak of history and anarchic politics. ”I want people to be afraid of the women I dress”, Lee said. (Bowles, 2010) “Many designers who reference history display a form of historical seamlessness in which the past is perfectly and nostalgically recreated in the present. With McQueen, however, the reference is not as comfortable; the suture lines of his much-discussed “surgical” tailoring techniques are still visible as uneasy grafts of history onto contemporary garments” stated Dr Jonathan Faiers who is the reader in fashion theory at Winchester School of Art. (Faiers , 2011) Background Information Le alexander McQueen was born in 1969 and was the youngest of six children; his father was a taxi driver and his mother a social history teacher. He spent his formative years drawing and reading books in fashion as he knew he would be a fashion designer from an early age. He left school when he was 16 with a simple O-Level and completed his A-level in Art at night school. Then he was...

Fashion Designers Biography

...ysl is a french designer.he was born Yves Henri-Donat Matthieu-Saint Laurent on August 1, 1936, in Oran[->0], Algeria. At the age of 18, Saint Laurent moved to Paris and enrolled at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, where his designs quickly gained notice. He is also credited with having introduced the tuxedo[->1] suit for women and was known for his use of non-European cultural references, and non-White models. Created in 1966 by famous couturier Yves Saint Laurent[->2],[1] the Le Smoking tuxedo[->3] suit for women was the first of its kind to earn attention in the fashion world and in popular culture. It pioneered long, minimalist, androgynous styles for women, as well as the use of power suits[->4] and the pantsuit[->5] in modern-day society. Fashion photography[->6] echoes the influence of this suit in shoots that feature androgynous[->7] models with slicked-back hair in a mannish three-piece suit, a style that was first popularised in photographs by Helmut Newton[->8].[1][2] Yves Saint-Laurent was seen by many as having empowered women by giving them the option wear clothes that were normally worn by men with influence and power.[2][But one day in 1966, the Algerian-born designer Yves Saint Laurent[->9] dropped le bomb with le smoking, a tuxedo suit of velvet or wool—black-tie menswear reinterpreted for the female form. We’re talking about Le Smoking, the first tuxedo for women. It consisted of a classic dinner jacket in black grain de poudre wool or satin and trousers...

But here I am in Nottingham, six months into an MA course in Fashion & Textiles at Nottingham Trent University. I am beginning to realise that doing a postgraduate degree in fashion is not really about being able to design wonderfully creative clothes, but about discovering my own potential. Every step I have been taking has brought me closer to understanding my philosophy towards what I design. The knowledge of why I do what I do is actually the strength, which is helping me to create new boundaries for myself. The course is structured in a way to ease everyone into the rigour that is required later in the MA phase. Short projects helped to 'get things going' initially, and then a group project put everyone on the spot because we had to be very interactive. Having said that, I think one of the best things about being at Nottingham is the fact that there are so many different people from all over the world. Even in a small group of 17, there is an American, a Chinese, an Indian, a Japanese, a Norwegian, a Thai, two Taiwanese and another Bangladeshi apart from the British. Our unique situation enables us not only to experience each other's culture vicarious but also be tolerant of our differences. It's interesting to see how...

Issey Miyake

...This devastating experience drove Miyake to pursue a career in fashion and dedicate his life to “things that can be created, not destroyed, and that bring beauty and joy” (Miyake, 2009). I believe Miyake’s creative vision and fashion designs represent three principles of Japanese culture that best demonstrate the legacy of the country. This essay examines these three notions— the concept of “mottainai,” the importance of innovation, and a desire to embrace and understand other world cultures—and explains why I am convinced Miyake’s fashion collection would be the most accurate reflection of Japan’s cultural legacy in a time capsule containing all the world’s heritage. “Mottainai” is not just a word, but also a way of life in Japan. A simple English translation is “waste not, want not,” but even this does not truly convey its meaning. In the past, Japanese people handled their clothing with the greatest care, stitching their threadbare garments to repair them rather than simply throwing them away. Even now, the Japanese are mindful of “mottainai” for clothing, as it is common to use old towels as dust cloths, and unneeded garments as wrapping paper for gifts. Miyake’s first fashion collection, which debuted in New York in 1971 and Paris in 1973, was entitled A Piece of Cloth. All the dresses in this collection were made from square pieces of cloth and sewn by hand in order to convey “mottainai” to the rest of the fashion world. In addition to demonstrating the concept of “mottainai...
