Overview I first did my project over Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. The thesis is Schlosser speculates that the fast food corporations around the nation have a direct correlation with Americans being consumed by fast food and overall having poor health. Schlosser also talks about the impact fast food has on Americans as a society by pointing out some interesting facts, such as Americans spend more money on fast food than higher education which I personally find very alarming. The book is split into two sections: First, “The American Way” goes in depth about the beginnings of the fast food industry and how the major fast food restaurants came about and evolved. Second, “ Meat and Potatoes “describes the chemical flavoring of the food, …show more content…
The first thing that really caught my attention was how much money people spend on fast food. As I stated above, the fact that we spend more money on fast food than higher education makes me feel disgruntled because higher education can lead to a degree and more money which can lead to us eating healthier food options since healthier food seems to cost more. A couple more examples Schlosser uses is that we spend more money on fast food than cars, computers, and movies. Another thing Schlosser points out how much effort fast food restaurants put into advertising to kids specifically. Schlosser goes into depth about how McDonalds does their advertising by pointing out how they give a toy with every kid’s meal and how that was a huge hit. At one point, McDonalds was the leading toy maker in the United States. All the fast food restaurants have similar approaches. They have big colorful signs that make their restaurant look appealing. Some even have playgrounds so that the kids can have a meal and play. They also have popular figures that represent their company. For McDonalds, it is obviously Ronald McDonald. Anyone could ask almost any kid who Ronald McDonald is and they will definitely know who he is. The fact that fast food targets kids at such a young age is impactful and makes me feel spiteful because they are succeeding at their advertising which will lead to unhealthy eating habits in the

...Paxton Tomlin Fast Food Nation Chapter 1 Summary Chapter one presents a historical look back at post-World War II America and how the fast food phenomenon we know today all began. The main theme of this chapter deals with the booming economy of the time and how people made their dreams possible. The dreams in this chapter, of course, deal with people owning their own fast food restaurant, and how their hard work payed off. Schlosser explains how the automobile industry, specifically in Anaheim, caused a demand for quality food made fast. The booming economy also played a role in helping people who visioned of opening up their own fast food restaurant, a possibility. One man in particular, Carl Karcher, was a man who dreamed of owning a hot dog cart and transformed that cart into one of America's biggest fast food chains. There is competitive motivation to win against the oil industry in a billion-dollar lawsuit. There is a hostile attitude toward the oil companies for destroying protected land.
