...Benefits of fasting. 1. What is fasting and can it be beneficial? Many of us know it as a protocol the doctor prescribes before blood testing. 2. For others, it may mean giving up a favorite food for a period of time or not eating food at certain times of the day or year out of respect for various religious holidays. 3. Strictly speaking, fasting is the voluntary absence of food. While the idea of missing even one meal might put most of us in misery, fasting does have many benefits for the body. 4. Fasting has been called the "miracle cure" because the list of physical conditions improved by fasting is long and varied. Cited most often are allergies, arthritis, digestive disorders of all kinds, skin conditions, cardiovascular disease, and asthma. Because fasting initiates the body's own healing mechanisms, any ailment may show improvement. 5. Fasting frees up energy so healing can begin.Fasting is a wonderful antidote for our usual over-indulgences. There's nothing wrong with enjoying our food, but excess food on a continuous basis does create a burden for the body. When it must handle more than is comfortable and appropriate for it, it will suffer. 6. Imagine at work how you feel when you're handed a huge work load--more than you can handle in your 8-10 hour day, more than is comfortable and appropriate for your job title (or salary level). You're under duress. But you will cope. You must cope. You must make decisions. You attend to the most important and...

...The "key" of fasting to receive God's authority in His kingdom, will be covered in this teaching. The Lord said He would give us the "keys to the kingdom." What did He mean by that statement? Keys to the kingdom are actually keys of authority. Matthew 16:19, "And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven..." KEYS OF AUTHORITY When Jesus becomes our Lord, we are automatically transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. Colossians 1:12-13 says, "Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear son." Now that we have a new king and live in a new kingdom, we must understand "kingdom principles" if we are to be victorious Christians. We cannot overcome until we have the keys that unlock the kingdom of heaven. The Lord never meant for us to wait until we die to experience heaven but purposed for us to bring heaven to the earth through the power of His Spirit. "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom" (Luke 12:32). We are unable to receive God's healing, provision and blessing if we do not know the keys the Lord has given us to accomplish kingdom living. Keys represent authority in the Kingdom of God, and authority is gained by using them. Fasting is only one of the keys to the kingdom; others are prayer, praise, worship, intercession...

...Intermittent Fasting Martin Kajtazi UWRT 150 – Writing Seminar, Rochester Institute of Technology Croatia Abstract Lately, people have been talking more and more about trying to live a healthier life. Majority of people are trying to be more productive in their business carriers and life in general. That’s where the Intermittent Fasting comes in, or the eating method which restricts the eating window to 8 hours per day. Many scientists and well recognized nutritionists have researched this method and came up with great results. They discovered that fasting promotes not just the fat loss, as other “diets”, but also improves physical performance and psychological processes such as memory and focus, all while providing better protection to the brain. Fasting lifestyle has been proved successful and implemented in many top athletes’ lives throughout the world. Other than biological benefits, fasting showed how well it could be incorporated with time management of someone who is trying to be more productive and efficient in every day life. Intermittent Fasting “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” – statement claimed by the majority of doctors today, but I’m afraid, not everyone understands the meaning of the word “Breakfast”. The word literally represents the meal by which you break your current fast, or a not eating period. It doesn’t say anywhere when it should happen. People are, not knowingly, fasting every day, usually when they are asleep – since they...

...Introduction Preoperative fasting is an experience which each individual must endure before entering the operating theatre. Fasting is an essential step. The purpose of fasting is to empty the stomach to reduce the risk of aspiration (Hamlin et al, 2009). Even though I am just a first year student with very little experience, I have already seen some conflicting recommendations regarding this subject. While working in the ward, nurses encouraged preoperative fasting to start at midnight which was different to what we learnt in our lectures, in which a preoperative fast of 4-6hrs was recommended. Guidelines for Preoperative Fasting. In 1999, the American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) implemented preoperative fasting guidelines to help develop a high standard of patient care. These Guidelines propose that healthy patients have to fast six hours from solids and two hours from liquids. The current outstanding guidelines for elective patients and their Minimum fasting period in hours are: Clear liquids 2 hours, Breast milk 4 hours, Infant formula 6 hours, Non-human milk 6 hours, light meal 6 hours and regular meals 8 hours ( Blanchard, 2012). Even though these guidelines are in place, many studies have shown that hospitals are still using “NPO after midnight” without taking into consideration a patients characteristics, the procedure they are getting done or even the time the procedure is taking place. The guidelines for preoperative fasting in elective patients do not apply in...

...Abstract This paper examines and analyzes optimal fasting before elective surgery by examining clinical study information to determine if optimal fasting is necessary and, if so, what effect this has had on patient risk and morbidity. Research is obtained from sources and studies that have collected data from observation and surveys, and fieldwork studies are also included. Information is also taken from various specialists in the field of anaesthesiology. The primary objectives of the data-gathering throughout the course of the paper will be to obtain information that can determine if optimal fasting is the best standard to implement, whether there are any correlations between pulmonary aspiration and optimal fasting, and if a new standard should be implemented that lessens fasting time. Outline Introduction Problem Statement Purpose of Research Research Objectives Research Methodology Research Design Data Collection Sample Design Field Work Data Analysis Limitations of Research Literature Review Application of Findings Implementation Conclusions Bibliography Appendices From the Paper "During a study conducted in 2002 (Crenshaw & Winslow), surgical patients revealed that they were thirsty and hungry after having fasted for 12-14 hours prior to surgery. However, guidelines issued in 1999 by the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) (www.asahq.org) allow for the consumption of liquids as close as two hours before surgery and a light...

...Research on intermittent fasting has become a popular topic as of late, although fasting has been a part of diets dating back to ancestral days. Food, back then, was not as prevalent as it is today and people had to fast until they could find something to eat, but now fasting is commonly done for dietary or religious purposes. “Intermittent fasting is not a diet, but a diet schedule that is purported to accelerate fat loss and muscle growth compared to traditional eating schedules,” (Simmons 2014). This article explores the different types of intermittent fasting, including Alternate Day fasting, LeanGains, and the Warrior Diet. It also details the positive metabolic effects, as well as the potential harms associated with intermittent...

...» April 22, 2011 — Ritual fasting has been part of religious traditions for thousands of years, from Muslims who fast during daylight hours in the month of Ramadan to Mormons who take a regular break from food the first Sunday of each month. But a recent growing body of research shows that abstaining from food intermittently may have physical as well as spiritual benefits — the latest, a study from Utah researchers that found that occasional fasts (defined as extended periods of time in which people generally abstain from all food and drink except for water) may reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Google “fasting for health” and you’ll get more than 7 million hits, ranging from doctors who recommend it in their practices to treat a range of diseases, spas that promise detoxifying food-free vacations, and message board postings from devotees who say that fasting makes them feel clearer mentally and more fit. “I fast whenever my body feels like it needs a reboot,” says Yoli Ouiya, 31, a New York City blogger who writes about eco-friendly living. She fasts once every few months. But is fasting a good idea for your health? Possibly, says David Katz, MD, MPH, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University. Every day, organs such as the liver, kidney, and spleen work to remove and neutralize toxins from the body to keep our cells healthy. “When you fast, you eliminate input of additional toxins from food,” says Dr. Katz, “and there is a potential biological...

...of a showman called a hunger artist. Although very popular at one time, he is steadily losing his following. This hunger artist has seen and experienced quite an assortment of followers. Being a hunger artist, he lives up to quite exactly what the name say’s. Removing food from one’s life(fasting), while displaying one’s self in a cage, more than likely designed only for animals. On display, the artist only has but straw and a clock inside his domain. His followers ranged from young children , holding hands with pure excitement to the elderly and all in between. Some came in groups, some came alone and some even had what they call , “season tickets,” to see his act. The hunger artist was so popular that there was visiting hours put aside at night just for his big attraction. Of course, there was always your casual everyday onlookers, but especially those interested in the unusual acts. However, the permanent viewers of which the public townspeople chose to keep an eye on him, were ironically butchers. These butchers were put in place to “keep him honest,” should he succumb to the desire to have even the slightest morsel of food. His act included fourty days of fasting. This appears to be a bit much, looking at the snappy behavior at times in the cage by the artist. He seemed to exhibit episodes of pure melancholy, and a deep loss and longing for his fans. This loss brought about times of snapping at even the few drifters who stopped by his cage here and there...

...TEXAS BIBLE COLLEGE BACHELOR OF MUSIC PROGRAM THE BIBLICAL MEANING OF FASTING AS IT RELATES TO THE CHRISIAN LIFE SUBBMITTED TO BROTHER JEREMY GILLIAM IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF KEYS TO SUCCESS #330 BY KRISTA KNOX FEBUARY 28, 2015 Introduction Fasting is when we as Christians spiritually discipline ourselves. We have to be submissive and be willing to do it. We cannot have a bad attitude when we decide to humble ourselves before God. There are so many different things that we can fast. We do not only have to fast food but we can also fast from media. Fasting brings us closer to God and it strengths our relationship with him. When we fast we are doing it to please God. When we are fasting, we cannot think that we are being starved from something or that something is being taken away from us. We are disciplining ourselves and separating from the world. “We are causing the natural body with its natural human desires to be submitted to the spiritual man within us (Malcomson, Fasting).” There are many different ways that we can fast. People can fast together as a group or even fast on different days throughout the week. You can also do a fast by yourself. In the bible, we are supposed to work and help one another. We need to be a untified and glorified body of Christ. If there is no unity in a church, it will fall apart. Fasting is biblical, and just because it is not required in the bible does not mean that we should not partake in it. Our flesh needs to be disciplined...

...aspect of fasting is a spiritual one. We grow spiritually and get closer to God through fasting and prayer. We read in the Gospels, "However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting" (Matthew 17:21, Mark 9:29). Fasting weakens the body and elevates the soul. It is a battle against the flesh. A weakened body is less susceptible to sin and more susceptible to an awakened soul. "My knees are weak through fasting, And my flesh is feeble from lack of fatness" (Psalm 109:24). Fasting is the first response to the act of being filled with the Holy Spirit. Fasting on the Mount was the first act of Christ to begin His ministry. Fasting removes the "lust of the flesh", "the lust of the eyes", and "the pride of life" (1 John 2:16). God ordered him not to eat from just one specific tree. This was not to deprive man, or to impose His authority, but rather to make man worthy of His love through fasting and obeying His commandment; "man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord..." Deut. 8:3, Matt. 4:4. The Lord, Himself fasted before undergoing trial and undertaking- 40 days (transfiguration). In this way He declared that fasting is not deprivation, neither is it a restraint upon the body; but it is rather a sublimation with our Lord on Mount Tabor which enables us to enjoy His Glory made manifest in us. The Coptic Church (as well as the Ethiopian Church) is an ascetic church that believes in the power of fasting in the...

...disciplines such as discipleship, worship and fasting. Both my personal and spiritual health were good but have improved. At the beginning of the term my personal and ministry growth were limited to the perspective of the leaders I studied under. Since I have started this class my personal and ministry spiritual growth has been enriched. I have been enlightened in the areas of fasting, living a crucified life, discipleship, worship, and revival. Though fasting has been a key factor in my personal and ministry growth, I had never been introduced to the concept of keeping a fasting journal. I have participated in personal fast for healing as well as a ministry fast for God to increase membership. During both fasts I would mediate on God’s word and pray. This concept that Towns reveals in his book, Fasting for Spiritual Break Through, has been a tool that has contribute to my personal and ministry growth. As I began to follow the guidelines that Towns provided for a fasting journal I gained insights about my current tribulation that I am going through. I was able to take my eyes off of my circumstances and focus on the lessons that God is teaching me during this tribulation. Towns points out one of the benefits of a fasting journal, “It provides a means of recording important lessons God is daily teaching” (218). Before the start of the term I understood living a crucified life to be attending church on Sunday, fasting, and praying. To live a crucified life goes...

...about an outside relationship within a marriage that is established between the narrator’s wife and a blind man. The story elaborates how the relationship can affect the normal relations of the couple. Communication in that marriage is not as effective as expected. Also, the privacy of the husband is affected. However, openness results to seeing a cathedral when the husband explains what it is to the blind man. The title is based on the cathedral but the story is about two men who have a problem seeing. In Franz Kafka’s story, "A Hunger Artist," a man, who the writer calls “Hunger Artist”, sets on a journey with his impresario from one town to the other and finds a public place to show his fasting skills. The man is locked up in a cage and he fasts for a period of forty days. During his fasting period, people are not attracted to his intensions but suspect that he is sneaking food. He is frustrated when the town people assign butchers to ensure that he feeds on nothing. The allow him to eat. Eventually, the manager sees that the man will die and feeds him forcefully. Later, the man dies. The cage was replaced with a panther that eats hungrily and attracts many people to it. The hunger artist is a symbol of how the world is. The artist represents the part of the world that needs attention from everyone. This joy-deprived man has set himself to live a life different from other people so that he can have a theme that will ignite the people’s behavior towards him. He stays hungry...

...Prayer: The Timeless Secret of High-Impact Leaders Book Critique Submitted by: Shannon J. Cockrell Student ID: L23353600 Submitted to: Dr. Jim O'Neill EVAN 670 Liberty Theological Seminary January 19, 2015 INTRODUCTION “Much prayer equals much power”, is a quote I’ve heard most my Christian adult life. Dr. Earley asks a thought-provoking question, “How would you rate your prayers?” (p.111) Truth be told, I wasn’t very powerful. Sure I prayed in the morning and at night, but I wasn’t seeing the results I saw that prayer brought about in the Scriptures. Prayer: The Timeless Secret Of High-Impact Leaders by Dr. Dave Earley is a life-transforming book. Earley has written a treatise on prayer that will be a classic for years to come. In this brief critique/review I will give an overview, summary of the chapters, critique, and application. SUMMARY “Leadership is influence…Prayer influences men by influencing God to influence them.” (Earley, x). Wow. What a powerful summary of his own book that Earlely gives us. This book is about influence and how prayer can better enable and position us to be better influences in the world. To lead better, we must pray better. Earley uses “Nine Prayer Disciplines of High-Impact Spiritual Leaders” to serve as the framework of his book. In chapter 1, entitled Value the Power of Prayer, Earley elaborates on the dynamic power that is found in prayer. Earley says, “If you want to maximize your impact, prioritize your...
