They are considered essential nutrients because our bodies either do not make them, or do not make enough of them. * They are essential for normal body functions like cell growth, blood cell production, hormone and enzyme synthesis, energy metabolism, and proper functioning of body systems, including the immune system, nervous system, circulatory system, and reproductive system. * Since no single food contains all the vitamins you need, you must obtain them through a variety of foods. *
What are fat-soluble vitamins? * An organic substance found in foods and essential in small quantities for growth, health and survival, they are required only in trace quantities because they are not consumed in the reactions. * They are soluble in and absorbed from the intestine in fat, include vitamins A, D, E and K, (The Free Dictionary by Farlex, 2012). *
