The play opens in the Cockroach kingdom. A place behind the wall of the home of Adil and Samia somewhere in the occupied lands of the Middle East. Lights Up KING: QUEEN: KING: QUEEN: KING: QUEEN: KING: QUEEN: Come along – It’s time for a day’s work. It’s not even dark yet! It will be any moment. Has the blinding light of day completely disappeared? Almost. Until it disappears completely, let me be, and don’t bother me. What laziness! What a state! I wasn’t sleeping you know. You must remember I have to make myself up. This beauty doesn’t come without a little effort. Don’t forget, I’m Queen! Heaven help all husbands. I’m the King. I’m exactly the same as you. There is a difference. And what might that difference be pray tell. My whiskers. Hah! Just as you have whiskers, so have I. Yes, but my whiskers are longer. That is a trifle of a difference. So it may seem to you. You mean to you. It’s your sick imagination that always makes it appear that there exists some difference between us. The difference is real – it can clearly be seen by anyone with eyes to see. If you don’t believe me, ask the Minister, the Priest, the Savant, or any of the worthy gentlemen of the royal court. The court!

The Fate of a Cockroach

...1. I think Christopher Plummer played the role of Professor Vladimir Nabokov very well in this film. His lecture was a straightforward summary about the story “The Metamorphosis”. His lecture helped me understand the story better by retelling the story in details. The drawings of the “beetle” help me visualize what kind of insect Gregor was and how Gregor would look out the window. The professor brought life to this story because of the way he explained it. 2. When I read the first sentence to the story I had no idea what this story would be about. The first sentence described a striking image to me when Gregor wakes up and “he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect” (pg. 428). When I first read this I kept wondering why Gregor turned into an insect overnight. I think Kafka chose an insect because insect are not species that are loved or cared for which could relate to how Gregor’s family members behaved towards him after he was transformed. At first all of the family members act sympathetic towards Gregor after his transformation but their feeling of sympathy change to feelings of disgust and ashamed. Grete becomes his caregiver and tries to figure out what kind of food he favors since his transformation but she can barely stand to be in the same room with him because of his appearance. The mother hopes Gregor will change back into his human form but she faints every time she sees him. The father shows the least sympathy and even attacks Gregor twice...

Oliver spends the first nine years of his life in a badly run home for young orphans and then is transferred to a workhouse for adults. Oliver narrowly escapes being apprenticed to a brutish chimney sweep and is eventually apprenticed to a local undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry. When the undertaker’s other apprentice, Noah Claypole, makes disparaging comments about Oliver’s mother, Oliver attacks him and incurs the Sowerberrys’ wrath. Desperate, Oliver runs away at dawn and travels toward London. Outside London, Oliver, starved and exhausted, meets Jack Dawkins, a boy his own age. Jack offers him shelter in the London house of his benefactor, Fagin. It turns out that Fagin is a career criminal who trains orphan boys to pick pockets for him. After a few days of training, Oliver is sent on a pickpocketing mission with two other boys. When he sees them swipe a handkerchief from an elderly gentleman, Oliver is horrified and runs off. The Fate of a Cockroach

...The Current War in Afghanistan Portfolio Causes: In 2001 Afghanistan was controlled by the Taliban. Under Taliban rule, Afghanistan had become home to various terrorist organizations/groups who trained and planned operations from the country. One of those organizations was called Al-Qaeda and were an extremist Islamic terror group lead by Osama Bin Laden. During the 90's they had carried out various attacks against US targets including bombing embassies and warships. Although, their previous activities were nothing compared to the amount of damage and huge loss of life suffered during 9/11. This left The world in disbelief and the population of the United states wanting justice. The various intelligence agencies were then able to workout that the attacks had been planned and organized from Afghanistan. This lead to George Bush declaring a war on terror and identified Afghanistan as their primary target. United States Involvement: The war in Afghanistan started in October 2001 when American and British forces invaded the country with the aim of arresting the Al-Qaeda leadership, including Bin-laden, removing the Taliban government from power who had harbored the terrorists and refused to co-operate. The operation was partly successful as Al-Qaeda's training camps were destroyed and several key leaders were killed although the main leader, Bin-Laden managed to escape. The Taliban government was then removed from power relatively quickly. The problem came with the fact that the...

Hakim's Fate of the Cockroach

...Llamas 1 Estefania Llamas CWL 100-01 Intro to World Lit. Professor Cooper M/W 9:30-10:45 am Class # 3837, Section 1 The Fate of the Cockroach Al-Hakim’s Fate of the Cockroach was first published in 1966. In my opinion, Hakim intended to portray humans as arrogant and self-centered. This play is a form of absurdist drama because it does not demonstrate some ideal of perfection, instead it demonstrates that people by nature are self-centered and power plays a vital role in this play. Another important factor is nurture vs. nature. I The beginning of the play displays power in the king and queen’s marriage. The king cockroach thinks he is better and the queen is mean to her husband, but she has more power than him. The king is admiring his long whiskers and she tells him to shut up and not to have pride in them. As a solution to defeat the ants, the minister cockroach suggests that they brainstorm what they do and don’t do, “Ants have discipline, they sacrifice and cockroaches do not (page 596).” The cockroaches argue to determine how to take action against the ants that are so organized and dependent on one another, while the cockroaches by nature self-reliant. For example, by nature I can say that I achieve success from my genetics or by nurture I achieved my success because of the environment or surroundings, in which I was taught. Llamas 2 On page 597, the savant says: “Yes, I once saw-a very long time ago, in the early days of my youth-several cockroaches gathered...

"I think this play will be surprising to many Canadians. It’s funny, it’s crazy and satirical. Not at all the image that most of us have about the Arab world.", says Ronald Weihs, the director of the play. In the first act, the characters are cockroaches, who live near a huge lake – sometimes filled with water, sometimes empty. The King falls into the lake (now dry) and cannot escape. All the other cockroaches pray to the gods to rescue him. In the second act, we see the gods – a married couple getting up for work. The husband becomes fascinated with the plight of the cockroach in his bathtub – to the dismay of his wife. Will the gods rescue the cockroach, or simply watch him struggle? With its pointed political satire, Fate of a Cockroach, written in 1967, is one of al-Hakim’s most...

Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis

...The story by Franz Kafka is one that captivates your attention just from its title “The Metamorphosis.” It is centered on the major character Gregor’s transformation from human to cockroach. Kafka delivers this story through an anonymous narrator. The narrator has a couple of similar and different roles from Gregor that makes him his own special character. One of the first things that jump at you as you’re reading the story is the fact that that narrator of the story is not Gregor Samsa. Due to the fact that the narrator is anonymous, it is safe to say he either has a third person point of view or a limited omniscient point of view. This leads me to say that the narrator is and isn’t Gregor Samsa. The story is told through Gregor’s perspective,...

The Butterfly Effect

...Chaos theory teaches us that small events can have enormous consequences. An opening title informs us that butterfly flapping its wings in Asia could result in a hurricane halfway around the world. Yes, although given the number of butterflies and the determination with which they flap their little wings, isn't it extraordinary how rarely that happens? "The Butterfly Effect" applies this theory to the lives of four children whose early lives are marred by tragedy. When one of them finds that he can go back in time and make changes, he tries to improve the present by altering the past. The characters as young adults are played by Ashton Kutcher, as Evan, a college psych major; Amy Smart and William Lee Scott as Kayleigh and Tommy, a brother and sister with a pedophile father; and Elden Henson as Lenny, their friend. The story opens in childhood, with little Evan seriously weird. His drawings at kindergarten are sick and twisted (and also, although nobody ever mentions it, improbably good for a child). He has blackouts, grabs kitchen knives, frightens his mother (Melora Walters), becomes a suitable case for treatment. A shrink suggests that he keep a daily journal. This he does, although apparently neither the shrink nor the mother ever read it, or their attention might have been snagged by entries about how Mr. Miller (Eric Stoltz), father of Kayleigh and Tommy, forced them all to act in kiddie porn movies. Evan hangs onto the journals, and one day while reading an old one at...

For Jane’s response to John she was punished ‘four hands were immediately laid upon me’ showing the harsh brutality Jane undergoes under the command of Ms Reed as she is places in the ‘red room’. ‘Penetrating rain’ symbolises Ms Reed and how piecing of a character she is. The neglect Jane faces is very similar to that Antoinette faces with her own mother. Emotionally her mother is absent she is merely there physically ‘flung me from her’ her mother was not at all emotionally attached to her but was very much so to her brother, Pire. Violence towards Antoinette is provoked by the emancipation act, she is on the receiving end of angered yet joyful, freed slaves. A young black girl throws a stone at Antoinette as she calls her ‘cockroach’ just as Jane feels when John Reed strikes her, this is an act that affects her both emotionally and physically. The Parrot is yet another that has been a victim to an act of valance,...

He is known as American novelist, satirist, and most recently, graphic artist. His funny, somewhat slang and imaginative writing style of fiction has been well-known especially among scholars, collage students and young people for more than 50 years. Through his works which usually involving dark humor, comical drawings, flying saucers and time travel, Vonnegut expresses social criticism about the suffering and atrocities human beings experienced in the 20th century—from the effects of war and atomic weaponry, to racism, social injustice, and environmental destruction. This novel is also a piece of Vonnegut’s memoir as an eyewitness when the tragedy happened. While in his seventh novel, Breakfast of Champions (1973) he stated at the preface “This book is my fiftieth-birthday present to myself. I will also draw from other sources to further illuminate his path to success through this difficult time. To set the tone; when Carlos Eire began his experience at “The Palace Ricardo”, he had already been air lifted from his parents and home in Cuba and shuffled from refugee holding grounds surrounded by strangers where he ate strange food in a strange land. Then he was given to a Jewish foster family. From this place of comfort he grew to love, he was quickly thrown into a house that his parents never hoped for him to end up in. Will Humans Be Able to Survive the Next Ice Age?

...Are Homo Sapiens really the smartest species on  Earth, and if so, is this sufficient to ensure its long‐ term survival? Submitted by: Andrew Jara Submitted to: Heidi White Course: AST 251H1 Due Date: March 12, 2013   1  As time passes, the Earth and all its inhabitants grow older, one must ask that as the number of inhabitants are increasing and the amount of resources decreasing, whether or not the human race will be able to withstand extinction. The parameters of human intelligence can be used to define and determine the possibility of this outcome. Humans are believed to have the title of being the most dominant and intelligent species on the face of the Earth, but there is much competition for that title today and arguments arise within the scientific community. Humans believe that they are separated from all other species based on the concept of intelligence and how they have used intelligence to their advantage to create language, technology and many other things to ultimately establish themselves as a successful species. In order to actually prove that humans rightfully deserve that title, one must delve into the debate of intelligence to clarify the meaning and understanding of intelligence. This will provide evidence to the argument on whether or not the human species will be viable in the long-term. In the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, intelligence is defined as the ability to collect and apply certain knowledge and information from the external environment...
