Fatherhood figures in Latinx literature is rarely talked about; the primary focus in Latinx literature is usually on motherhood and overcoming struggles in the Latinx community, but it rarely focuses on Paternal figures. Looking at works such as Esmeralda Santiago’s When I Was Puerto Rican, we start to notice fatherly figures assuming a machismo role; fathers never face repercussions for not being there for his children, and often never hesitate to have an affair because as long as he’s still providing for his family. Bringing in cultural theory (with a focus on gender roles), we see that many latinx cultures use a traditional male-dominant structure, and the way that this influences fatherhood is through the lack of emotional connections
