Quantitative Data and Qualitative Data in Statistics
Applied Statistics IP 1

Statistics is a major part of the criminal justice system. Statistics is known to be quantitative ways of summarizing information (Williams, 2009). Many people think that statistics are used just with sample information and not used with population information like the census. In actuality percentages and averages are used with population as well. There are many different types of statistics such as descriptive, inferential, and predictive. Statistics in criminal justice helps people to understand who commits what crimes, the length of sentences, and figure out if more women or men are in certain prisons. There are many ways that statistics can be observed as well. Charts and graphs is one visual way that people can see quantitative data for criminal justice. There are many people who are visual so just seeing a bunch of numbers will not help them to really see what is going on and be able to understand it. There are many aspects to figuring out the statistics in criminal justice. Information that is collected in statistics comes from qualitative data and quantitative data. Different methods of math and graphs/ charts are used to analyze this information as well. The data that was chosen to be examined first was qualitative data for gender. I chose this data because it shows how many males and females commit crimes and what types of crimes they commit. When doing the mean, median and mode for this data it gave me numbers that I really could not get much information from. For the qualitative data for gender for the mean I received 1.8, median: 2, and mode: 2 as well. For quantitative I chose CJ System. I chose this information because it shows me how many people really rate the criminal justice system. The CJ System in the key provided was rated on a scale
