...Analysis In the process of researching the selected topic regarding “Fear” there were many angles to consider in how ‘in depth’ the writers got into their topic. There were many questions to ask in how well the authors of the writings made their claims concerning the topic. As each author has his or her own way of reaching the audience it would be only right that his or her writing process reflect this. Each author has their own brand of emotion and logic he or she uses to reach their audiences, which in turn can affect each authors writing. Each author brings to the table a unique style of writing, one using technical/formal, one using a bit of technical/formal with a bit of informal thrown in. The third author was very informal toward their audience. In regard to this analysis this essay will reflect on each different aspect these authors bring forth in their writings concerning the topic “Fear.” The first author who will be discussed within this essay is Frank Furedi. As he is the one that started this essay on the trail of finding how different authors reflect on this topic of fear. Furedi starts his topic with “The only thing we have to fear is the “culture of fear” itself” (Furedi, 2007, pg. 1). In stating his argument that” fear is playing a key role in the twenty-first century” he is making a claim without any support to back his statement at this time (Furedi, 2001, pg.1). The style of Furedi’s writing is a mixture between formal and informal, in the range of semiformal...

...Megan Major Essay 1 ENC 1101 October 14, 2014 Valencia 1275 words How to Not Procrastinate Perfectionism and procrastination go together like peanut butter and jelly. By people expecting too much of themselves, they tend to become scared of writing and the essay not meeting their expectations and therefore procrastinating until the last minute. Although many more elements come into play, priorities and organizational skills are a big role in the way you may procrastinate. Many people may just need help in the organization department in order to not procrastinate and others may need help dealing with many more issues they have with the issue of procrastination. I believe in order to help prevent or totally eradicate procrastination from your work method; you must first look at yourself. Are you struggling with confidence or is it simply that you are too much of a perfectionist and nothing you seem to write is up to par? Well, the first step would be to stop over thinking everything you decide to put down on paper; it probably isn’t as bad as you think it is. When you stop over thinking, writing will come a lot easier and less forced than before and you may feel that you don't have to wait until the last minute to write your assignments. Also, with putting less pressure on yourself and constantly forcing yourself to rewrite the assignment over and over again; you’ll feel the weight of an elephant being lifted off your chest. Good organizational skills have been...

...Fear an emotion that drives many people to insanity and disdain. Edgar Allen Poe is a well known Gothic literature author that was capable of introducing fear into his readers imagination through the use of three literary devices those being suspense, symbolism and Gothic elements. In "The Fall of the House of Usher" Poe utilizes suspense in order to bring forth fear in his writing. In the story the narrator states "Vigilae Mortuorum secundum Chorum Ecclesiae Maguntinae...the wild ritual of this work...of preserving[Lady Madeline's] corpse"(Poe 304). Now this embeds suspense into the readers thoughts because they in turn understand that the narrator is also in fear of the insanity his friend is experiencing due to the death of his beloved sister. Later in the story the narrator explains a meeting with Roderick Usher stating "his countenance was...wan...a species of mad hilarity in his eyes... evidently[restraining]hysteria"(306). Suspense is yet again brought into the picture with the narrators explanation of Usher. Roderick is described as...

...from. Authors writing styles are no different. Specifically Arthur Miller and Edgar Allen Poe. Both of these authors writing styles involve using characters to display fear through their writing. However, the difference lies within how each author uses those characters. Miller uses his characters in a way that creates a type of fear that never goes away, it sticks with the reader until the end of time, whereas Poe uses his characters to create a fear that builds up and then hits the reader all at one point. In the Crucible, Arthur Miller creates fear through his characters, specifically by giving unreliable characters, like judge Danforth, more power than they can handle. Miller does a great job displaying this toward the end of Act three when Danforth believes Abigail’s accusation of a yellow bird on the ceiling. In the story, Danforth states “What is it child?” and when Proctor denies there being a bird Danforth exclaims “Be quiet”! These lines spoken by Danforth show fear because it shows how when one person has power they can make the decision however they want, whether it’s the way we want them to or not. This shows the reality that one person could...

...Assignment 2.3: Changing Our Lives Essay “Changing Our Lives” – Final Version * Assignment 1.3: Experiences as a Writer Paragraphs “Conquering My Fear of Writing” – Final Version “My Journey as a Writer” Aura Valdes ENG090 Prof. Rachel Hays December 15, 2012 “My Journey as a Writer” I have accomplished a great deal in the past three months. As the semester ends I find myself reflecting not only on how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. Writing is hard work. There is so much more to it than just writing an interesting story. I also learned another important lesson; just because I worked hard on an essay before presenting it and reviewed the daylights out of it did not mean it was ready for submission. Every time I went back to read it I found new changes, typos and other mistakes I had missed before. Reviewing and revising an essay is an essential part of writing. Reviewing allows me to rewrite and make changes in the essay’s content, organization and sentence structures. It allows me to add, remove, move or substitute words to make sure it communicates effectively the purpose of the essay. The task of reviewing the essays I wrote for this course allowed me to learn and improve my writing skills; as a result my essays have evolved into more stylish and fluent pieces of writing. Out of all the essays I wrote in this course, “A Book with Nostalgic Flavor” is my favorite and the one I would like to improve even further. I...

...Shana Miller Intro to Literature I-search Paper Choosing a topic for a paper such as this one was really difficult for me. I have always been an avid reader and have always loved so many different authors. There are many questions I have about authors, their works and literature in general. For this paper I choose to write about someone who is a little more modern day; someone who everyone would be familiar with, regardless of whether they are a fan or not. I choose to write about the very famous author, Stephen King. Stephen King has always fascinated me, not only as an author but as a person. This is a man who seems to have an imagination that is never ending, with a soul and mind so dark, is it beyond compare. How else could you write and publish over 60 horror books? All of which are unique, intense, and ultimately terrifying. My question is, who is this person and what is it that inspires this creativity and horror? As a child, I grew up in a household of readers. There was never a time I that I can recall my mother, father, brothers, or myself not having one or more books that each of us were reading. My mother’s favorite author was (and is) Stephen King. There was something that intrigued me about this, though I was not allowed to read most of his works for the longest time; of course my mother was concerned that they would be inappropriate for me to read. This only made the intrigue of the author that much more. Once I was old enough to begin discovering his...

Authors who are addicts use their writing in many ways to reveal their thoughts and feelings of their addictions. Fitzgerald is an example...

...In Ann Lamott’s essay “Shitty First Drafts,” Lamott writes about the ins and outs of being a writer. Lamott is a distinguished author, and the essay “Shitty First Drafts,” is an excerpt from one of her novels “Bird by Bird.” Ann Lamott’s main point in her essay is that all writers have to begin somewhere and somewhere is with a “shitty first draft.” Lamott claims that people have an unrealistic expectation about successful writers. That writing a perfect first draft would be an exception, not a rule. As a rule, almost all writers start with some form of a “shitty first draft.” Writing takes work. Writing is a process, and one cannot expect to write a masterpiece in one sitting. This process begins with the “shitty first draft.” The point...

One instance that displays this is when she claims immigration legislation throughout history “exposes a people’s deepest fears.” (218). The Massachusetts Bay Colony’s court issued an order to keep out people who may be dangerous to the commonwealth, after people like Anne Hutchinson voiced unpopular opinion. Throughout the history of the United States, there have been immigration laws, such as the Anarchist Exclusion Act of 1903 and the Patriot Act of 2001, that parallel the colonists fears of people who may be dangerous. ...because. 4. Many people may not understand how a credit score is calculated Part II Analyzing effective writing elements After reading paragraphs one and four there is little difficulty to identify that paragraph number four was more effective than paragraph number one. Of the two Paragraphs four presented facts and percentages in his paper such as. “Payment history accounts for roughly 35% of one’s overall score. This means that on-time payments are absolutely essential. Debt level is not far behind at 30%. This accounts for near-limits and the total amount of money owed. Length of credit history is next at 15%, followed by inquiries at 10% and mix of credit at 10%.” Paragraph four’s sentence structure and word choice were in line with the text and punctuation was good. Paragraph one had only the writer’s personal view on why Wills are important. More facts and general example would have kept me more engaged in what I was reading in paragraph one. The sentences used by the write could also have given a better description of what the “things going to someone you don’t want them to go to” are? ...Essay #1- Connecting Reading to Service Typically, when the term “literacy” is mentioned, one automatically connects it with reading and writing. Literacy, to me, is much more than that. Literacy is the “ability to read and write”, but I believe that literacy is a way to grow, discover, and express oneself. My ideal vision of literacy instruction would be to allow students to use reading and writing as a gateway to self-expression. Literacy can be used to grow not only as a person, but as a well-developed writer. A constraint to my vision of literacy would be the restricting mindset instructors enforce on their students. Students have been expected to write solely based on the “rules” taught by their teachers throughout their education. If students do not comply with these “rules”, they are punished with a bad grade. I strongly believe that students write in fear of bad markings and in fear of not pleasing their instructors’ needs. As students advance through the education system, they must advance in their writing skills as well. University students should be able to read and write at a higher level. High school and college instructors must be open to reason and consider that being so demanding with their criteria will only cause students to write at basic level. Instructors that have a stern grading policy are only keeping their students skills at a standstill. Some concerns with my vision of literacy would be that it can cause instructors to hold back on their grading’s...
