Moonstone is a semi-precious Feldspar mineral that is most commonly seen as a white stone with a bluish sheen. Also known as Ceylonese Opal, Girasol, Fish-Eye, Aphroselene, Chandrakanta and Wolf’s-Eye, the moonstone was named after the moon due to the similarities between the moon’s glow and the stone’s adularescence. The adularescence is the blue color sheen that is seen when light is reflected from the stone. Moonstones, though most commonly white, can also be colorless, silver to grey, green, orange, peach, yellow or multi-colored. They can be found in Brazil, Burma, Germany, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Tanzania, and the United States, but the highest quality moonstones come from the region of Sri-Lanka. This stone has been around and prominent since ancient times. Romans thought that the stone was actually formed by the moonlight, while in the Orient it was believed the stone was made up of these rays and the sheen produced by the stone was a sign that a good spirit lived in the stone. The moon is generally seen to be a representation of the goddess or the feminine and as such can be associated with all goddesses, however, those specifically known as moon goddesses would have a stronger association with the stone. The representation of the feminine aspects leads the stone to be very useful in any type of feminine concern or energy. It has been used to treat all manner of physical problems such as menstruation or fertility concerns. Moonstone was worn during pregnancy and labor for protection, as well as hung in trees to ensure an abundant harvest.
