...Noura Badr EL Din Anth 202 Dr. John Schaefer 900061495 15 March 2012 Film Review Letter to the Dead Eytan Kapon and Andre Iteanu are ethnologists who have always been interested in the exceptional people of Papua New Guinea. They shed light on the people of Jajau in their movie "Letter to the Dead" which was filmed in December 1999 and January 2000. This was due to the rumors that were widespread at the time that included the return of the dead and of Christ on the eve of the new millennium. The film aims to encourage reflection on the relationship between the West and the third world countries and how the people of Jajau view Whitemen. Moreover, the movie discusses the beliefs, customs, traditions, rituals and values of the inhabitants of Papua New Guinea and draws attention to new ideas and a unique mentality that may seem bizarre and new to modernized people. In Jajau, most citizens believe that their parents will return from the dead and they always preach their resurrection in churches and perform rituals to honor them and communicate with them. They call these rituals “pondos“. Pondos are taken very seriously in the orokaivan culture. It involves dancing, praying for the dead, exchanging gifts and the person who hosts the pondo has to feed everyone who is invited. During the ritual pigs are usually carved on the platform. Food and clothing are also a huge issue in Papua new Guinea; they have a lot of food such as taros, bananas...

...The Constant Gardener INTRODUCTION Why Fernando Meirelles? Fernando Meirelles’ film is one of a recent batch of Hollywood films dealing with serious issues. In this case the film is a conspiracy thriller, which looks at the involvement of a large pharmaceutical company in testing drugs in Africa. That said, the film is much more, combining a love story, a quest for revenge and expressing real anger about the West’s apparently unchecked exploitation of ordinary African people. The Constant Gardener is an adaptation of a novel by the British writer John le Carré, best known for his tales of spies and Cold War intrigue. Fernando Meirelles seemed an odd choice for director, because of his Brazilian background and the seemingly huge difference between this film and his first feature, the explosive story of a Rio favela, City of God (2003). www.filmeducation.org 1 Mike Newell was the first choice for director, but had already committed himself to the new Harry Potter film, but Meirelles was very interested in the project. He told The Independent, ‘The chance to take on the pharmaceutical industry was one of the three elements that made me want to direct The Constant Gardener, as was the chance to shoot in Kenya. Also, it’s a very original love story about a man who marries a much younger woman who is very different from him, and it’s only after she dies that he truly falls in love with her.’ Meirelles’ Brazilian background gave him a source of empathy with the poverty in...

...returning to San Fernando after having been sentenced to two years in jail for fatally injuring Cyril and leaving him cripple. I have personally never had an experience or witnessed a scenario like this but reading along I felt involved in the street and among the crowd witnessing a chaos about to unravel before my eyes. Indeed, when tragic events happen in a community and someone is convicted for a devious crime, the community will remember the criminal and brand and impression of him or her. Convicted persons are not always or usually welcome into their communities due to the stigma that has been created about them. In this narrative, the people of the town of San Fernando had definitely not forgotten ‘The Tiger’ who had them at bay when he was part of the desperado gang. He had now returned and was confronted by Little John who was raged at Willis for having fatally injured Cyril and left him cripple. Strong emotion and feelings of anger and revenge by Little John are described in page four of the narrative “Tiger!” he shouted as if ten lions were awake in him. Willis, who was once the feared tiger of the town for his vicious act of branding with a knife, the flesh of those who crossed him, was now a meek a scared mouse until Little John’s anger and threat sparked the tiger in him once again causing him to bore a knife into little John’s side in self defense. Willis who suffered and learned to value himself in jail, had made the grave mistake of returning to San Fernando, and now...

...Fernando Meirelles’ City of God transcends the typical gangster film dynamic. All of the gangsters, or “hoods” as they are referred to in this film, are no older than late teens or early twenties. Seen through the eyes of a young teenager attempting to become a photographer in the hoods of Rio de Janeiro, the film concentrates on the emergence, rise, war, and collapse of the infamous hood Li’l Zé. For the majority of the film Li’l Zé stands as the smartest and most powerful hood in the slums. This is pervasive not only in his dominance, but also during Li’l Zé’s climb to the top. One of the most significant scenes of this film is the transformation of Li’l Dice into Li’l Zé. Early in the film Li’l Dice stands look-out at the motel hold-up, but the viewer remains uninformed what happened to him until about twenty minutes later in the film when Li’l Zé’s story is revealed. These two points of the film are separated by the conclusion of the story of the Tender Trio. For this essay I will examine the filmmaking significance of splitting the introduction and conclusion of this scene by over twenty minutes. The first portion of this sequence begins with Li’l Dice as a young child of no more than ten years old giving a brilliant criminal idea to the Tender Trio. Li’l Dice is then told against his desire that he is not allowed to take part in the plan, but instead must stand guard and shoot out a window if the police show up as to warn Clipper, Shaggy and Goose. The shot of...

...The film ‘The Constant Gardener’ directed by Fernando Meirelles, I agree, is used as a means to critique our society. The character of Justin Quayle, a British High Commission Diplomat, is used by the director to reflect society. We see this in the beginning of the film where his ignorance leads to a false perception of reality, which highlights the 2 major themes in the film of Truth and Perception and Guilt and Atonement. Justin uses gardening as a means to feed this ignorance, just as society itself uses work, family and other matters to hide from the harsh reality. But as his wife Tessa dies under unusual circumstances it leads Justin into the real world, where the truth can no longer be covered up and he must follow the road to atonement. In an early scene of the film, Justin, like society is consciously removed from reality. Before this scene we are shown wide and establishing shots of Lake Tuitakana in Africa where we see mars-like images of the red sands and bright blue water streaked across the landscape. This scene then fades into the British High Commission Embassy, where there is a complete contrast in colours. We instead get a Wide Shot of the building with dull colours of grey and dark greens and blues. This shot also shows Justin “skiving” as he waters his plants. Although he is in charge of Aid distribution in Kenya, he is choosing to remain in his own perfect world “a world with no weeds”, where he stays in the office and has never once gone outside of the British...

...Fernando Amorsolo was born May 30, 1892, in the Paco district of Manila. At 13 he was apprenticed to the noted Philippine artist Fabian de la Rosa, his mother's first cousin. In 1909 Amorsolo enrolled at the Liceo de Manila and then attended the fine-arts school at the University of the Philippines, graduating in 1914. After working three years as a commercial artist and part-time instructor at the university, he studied at the Escuela de San Fernando in Madrid. For seven months he sketched at the museums and on the streets of Madrid, experimenting with the use of light and color. That winter he went to New York and discovered the works of the postwar impressionists and cubists, who became the major influence on his works. On his return to Manila, he set up his own studio. During this period, Amorsolo developed the use of light--actually, backlight--which is his greatest contribution to Philippine painting. Characteristically, an Amorsolo painting contains a glow against which the figures are outlined, and at one point of the canvas there is generally a burst of light that highlights the smallest detail. During the 1920s and 1930s Amorsolo's output of paintings was prodigious. In 1939 his oil Afternoon Meal of the Workers won first prize at the New York World's Fair. During World War II Amorsolo continued to paint. The Philippine collector Don Alfonso Ongpin commissioned him to execute a portrait in absentia of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, which he did at great personal risk. He...

...Baseball & Health Jeremy Rostker 04/17/08 A healthy and active lifestyle is important to the quality of my life and the achievement of my goals as it allows me to live longer and participate in activities I enjoy. It also strengthens my immune system and lowers my chance of disease. My goal in life is to be successful in all of my endeavors. Doing things like playing sports, participating in P.E. and taking a biology class are helping me to live healthy. I make sure to stay healthy and in shape because I know it will benefit me greatly. If I didn’t play sports or eat healthy I would likely become overweight and unhealthy. Although my chances of becoming a professional athlete are slim (I know this because my teacher did a probability exercise demonstrating this to get me to focus on “academics”!), a healthy life is essential for me to overcome the odds. Statistics show that overweight people are more likely to suffer heart disease, diabetes and other illnesses. They also have a shorter life span. According to the American Heart Association, in 2006, about 136 million U.S. adults were overweight or obese and 25 million children were at risk of becoming overweight. Besides poor eating habits, smoking is also a major contributor to unhealthiness. Smoking can damage your body and lifestyle immensely. When you smoke, you’re at risk for cancer. Smoking can also cause gum...
