Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
In the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the main character, Ferris, speaks directly to the viewer, which is called breaking the fourth wall. This type of narration helps hook the audience to the movie with Bueller’s charm and “wisdom.” It also brings a more comical and aloof feeling to the movie, with Bueller making jokes and explaining his view of the people in his lives. He has basically made himself the narrator of the movie. This happens very often throughout the movie, even with the opening scene starting with Bueller giving the audience tips on how to play sick for the parents. The reasoning behind breaking the fourth wall, especially in this movie, is to explain to the audience the different types of situations the characters have gotten themselves into. He will go into detail about the how and why of certain situations, such as the opening monologue when Bueller explains “Life moves pretty fast” (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off). He is basically saying, why would one not do all they can to enjoy a beautiful day. At another point in the movie, Bueller explains the character of Cameron in a nutshell after listening to a conversation between the two of them arguing about whether or not Cameron will be picking up Ferris to enjoy the day together. In this direct address, Bueller lets us know that Cameron is a severe hypochondriac. And he believes Cameron is like this because of his home situation. Cameron feels better when he does not feel good at all. Another instance in which Bueller directly addresses the audience is when Cameron goes into shock. He lets everyone know that this is serious and does not normally happen so badly. He also lets everyone know that there is no reason to worry, he has a solution. And the movie also ends with Bueller directly addressing the camera. He comes around the corner in a hallway in his house saying, “you’re still here? It’s over, go home. Go home” (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off). This instance especially completely breaks the existence of any type of wall separating the actors and the audience. Bueller is not only speaking directly to you, but is now telling you what to do and why you should be doing it. The effect of the direct addresses in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on my perspective is that it adds a very personal touch to the movie. The way the narration is laid out makes it seem as though Bueller very much wants the audience/viewers to get to know him, his friends, and his family. It made me want to continue watching the movie and learn more and more about the plot and characters. It also gave the film an even more juvenile, amusing feel to it from my perspective because normally, older men with deep voices do film narrations. Bueller’s voice had obviously not come in completely yet which emphasized the young feeling of the movie.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off Analysis

...After reading Catcher in the Rye and watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off I have seen some interesting differences between Holden Caulfield and Ferris Bueler. Some of these include their view on society, their view on the people around them, and their personal state of mind. Let's start with Holden Caulfield. Holden doesn’t sound too different from any other disaffected, bored kid, Ferris included. But there are definite hints in the text that Holden isn't just another normal teenager. First of all we know he had to take some sort of “rest” from regular life to go through therapy and get psychoanalyzed. We know he's prone to violent outbreaks, like breaking all the windows in the garage the night Allie died, or tackling Stradlater after his date with Jane, or screaming at Sally in public. He's flunked out of multiple boarding schools. He's...

I Don't Have One

...“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” It may be a bit of a stretch to say everyone in the English speaking world knows what movie that quote is from, but it’s not that long of one. Since its 1986 release “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” has become an American classic, and its late director John Hughes became a king in the teen movie genre. Hughes wrote countless classic ’80s films, such as “Pretty in Pink,” the first two “Home Alone” films, “Christmas Vacation” and “Flubber.” The man penned some classic one-liners and also wrote quite a few life lessons into his films. That spurs the question — what other films from the 1980s include valuable life lessons? Yes, the ’80s are the butt of all decade jokes, but where would America be without those crucial 10 years of big ugly hair, heavy eye makeup and leg warmers? No matter the fashion, people were still people in the ’80s, and there’s always something to be gleaned from the past. We’ll examine life lessons taught to us by several films from the ’80s; “The Breakfast Club,” “Pretty in Pink,” “Back to the Future,” “Heathers” and (how could we not?) “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” Unknown-3 You never know what kind of friends you’ll make in detention. Photo from IMDb. “The Breakfast Club:” One of the most important lessons in “The Breakfast Club” is to not judge someone based on first impressions. Did anyone honestly expect a beauty queen and a rebel to fall for each other? How...

Time Management

...Time Management (A) Lesson pacing in the classroom is extremely important. The reason it is so vitally important is because it lends purpose, direction, and structure to the classroom. Teachers, of course, need to develop lesson plans which meet certain educational objectives. Teachers could accomplish this with a nice long lecture with a follow-up question/answer session. However, they also need to keep the students engaged, interested, and retaining the information. Teachers don't really want a Ferris Bueller's Day Off classroom scenario..."Anyone?...Anyone?", nor do students. Okay, that's fine. A teacher could incorporate tons of interaction and many different activities into the lesson. Here's lies the rub...they need to do all of this in 45 minutes. Lesson pacing ensures that the teacher can accomplish all of these classroom needs. (B) One might think that if a class includes English Language Learning (ELL) students, then the pacing of the lesson would need to slow significantly. However, this is not necessarily the case. Of course it will need to slow some to allow for language clarification and to allow the ELL students time to translate in their heads. The pacing really just needs a little change-up. Direct instruction should be in more simplified language and with more interaction. The use of visual aids and graphic organizers should be incorporated into direct instruction. Direct instruction also need not be given in one big chunk...

Day Off Archetype

...In Ferris Bueller's Day Off the director introduces Ferris as the mentor in the movie while Cameron and Sloane are the loyal companions/sidekicks. He also uses “The Fall” plot archetype to reveal how; we as humans must make hard choices in our lives in order to stand up for what we think is right, because if we don't then we will be stomped on our whole lives. The theme is proven through the movie because Ferris makes tough/risky decisions because he didn't want to be controlled in his life. ...where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.' (Matthew 6:20 NIV) "Life moves pretty fast, if you don't stop and look around one in a while, you could miss it." Of course, if you've seen the movie you realize, not only is this Ferris' mantra, but essentially the point of the movie. How fast does life move? ...engineering concept in construction called “bundled tube” configuration. With Chicago being known as the “windy city” these tubes were created solely to provide stability from the strong winds. Two hundred of these bundled tubes were laid into the bedrock. Then 76,000 tons of prefabricated steel in 15 foot by 25 foot sections were put into place according to Jackie Craven 2008. It took four derrick cranes that moved higher with each floor to lift these steel sections into place. With the new concept the Sears Tower is actually a bundle of nine tubes that terminate at different heights, creating the iconic stepped-back appearance of the tower. This appearance served well as a backdrop to numerous films utilizing Chicago’s skyline including Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Fugitive. In 1984 Sears-Reebok Company moved out of the tower leaving half of the building vacant for nearly five years. In 1986 AEW Capital Management bought the tower for $800 million and managed to raise to occupancy by 40 percent. However AEW could not gain profit from the tenants due to estate depression and lower than average rental rates within the tower. (Krause, 2008) In late 1997 the Sear’s Tower was sold...

My Dream Car

... The 125 Sport was the first ever Ferrari motorcar. Enzo Ferrari did not intend to build road cars, when he formed the Scuderia Ferrari in 1929. After World War I, Ferrari became a driver on the Alfa-Romeo team. Following a victory at Ravenna, the family of Francesco Baracca, presented him with a small charred plaque. Baracca had died in combat and the plaque was one of the parts of the Ferrari emblem. The Ferrari emblem with a yellow shield with a black horse in the middle is recognized across the world of automobile fanatics. This prancing horse became the symbol of Ferrari and it appeared on all the cars he drove. Ferrari automobiles have been featured in many films and television shows. The Ferrari 250 was in the 1986 movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off driven by Matthew Broderick, the Ferrari 512 driven by Steven McQueen was in the 1971 film Le Mans, the Ferrari Mondial was in 1985 movie Weird Science driven by John Hughes, the Ferrari Daytona appeared in the Miami Vice television shows, driven by Don Johnson, and a replica of the Ferrari F430 was used in the Pixar movie Cars. Lastly the Ferrari F430 Is one of the fastest cars in the world, and my favorite of all. This Ferrari can go from 0 to 60 in approximately 4 seconds. Nonverbal Comunication

...Nonverbal communication can be more telling sometime of our actual thoughts that the words we speak. It is a crucial part of the way we communicate yet it is often neglected. Nonverbal communication includes such things as eye contact, facial expressions, posture, and hand gestures. Even though, we primarily focus on our verbal message our nonverbal message is the first thing other see. In Communicating in the Workplace it states that “nonverbal messages are sent in advance of verbal messages. Before you even open your mouth, your facial expressions, your clothes, your walk, your body posture, your skin color, your hairstyle, etc. are communicating much about you” (Cheesebro, O'Connor, & Rios, 2010, p. 89). When we speak we are also nonverbally communicating whether we want to or not. That is why it is so important that our nonverbal message is aligned with what we are actually saying. If the two do not match then our message can be misinterpreted or lost completely to our audience. Your message can come across as negative or positive depending on how it is communicated. For it to come across as needed it must be presented in a way that is easy to understand for your listeners. It seems that as we technologically advance our communications skills have declined. According to Cheesebro, O'Connor, and Rios (2010), “a more common concern is our lack of clarity and purposefulness when we speak rather than our inability to communicate both verbally and nonverbally”(p. 80)...

Easy a

...Easy A The Princess Bride, Groundhog Day, and Ferris Bueller’s Day off have all become some of the great classic comedies of all time. What makes a classic comedies movie? A classic stands the test of time. It does not matter the period the film was made, because people can relate to the storyline in each era. The plots are solid. The films are enjoyed generation after generation. I believe Easy A will be joining this group of classic comedies as move generation moves to the next one. What makes Easy A such a great movie, that will last for generations, is its story. About how one lie can change the way everyone see you. It is a relatable and clever movie, with great humor and quotable one-liners. Easy A is about a high school student, Olive Penderghast, played by the talented Emma Stone, finds herself the victim of her school's "rumor mill". When she lies to her best friend Rhiannon, played by Alyson Michalka that she has a date with a nonexistent community college student, so that she doesn’t have to spend the weekend with Rhiannon and her family. The two of them are over heard in the bathroom the next Monday as Olive lies about her encounter, telling Rhiannon that she lost her virginity that weekend with her fictitious boyfriend. The rumor spreads through the school like wild fire; she soon becomes the scandal of the school after the religious fanatic Marianne decides to make her the school outcast. Meanwhile, Olive is studying "The Scarlet Letter" in the English...

...In this paper I will be detailing what I feel is my personal philosophy of education. While I was pleasantly surprised and found it interesting to see the different approaches outlined in our curriculum notes; about IE ,essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, social reconstruction, and existentialism. However, I found myself a little confused as to exactly where I stood in comparison to those very distinct models. There were parts in all of them that I disliked, however there were parts in each that I liked equally as well. The role of the learner in both the essentialist and perennialist, views has merit to me in regards to the idea that the students role should be to listen and learn. I also like the ideas in both arenas of thought that the student’s mind is referred to as “an empty jug” or a “sponge.” I love the perennialist idea of embracing the classic works, putting an emphasis on literature and art studies. I feel that these are certainly important things to use to engage the minds of our students to make them more well-rounded and aware of our history as creative humans. I cringed with the idea that learners should be thought of as “passive.” I feel that the best way to learn is through hands on interaction. This is what I like about the approaches described in the progressive, social reconstruction, and, to a point, the existential views. When learners are allowed to wrestle with an idea presented to them and to try and figure out exactly what that idea really...
