...the common law. The law of the land.” Two short sentences sum up what The Field is all about. A dark metaphor of gritty life on the land, set on the Irish countryside. The Field succeeds in being dark, very dark. Adapted to the screen from the John B. Keene play of the same name much of the symbolism translates, however most of the character development fails to make the journey. The Field centers on “Bull” McCabe (Richard Harris), a man whose family has farmed a field for generations and intends to do the same for generations to come. This bearded and battered old man has little else to show for his efforts than the fertile soil he rents from a local, mysterious, widow. He continually offers her what little he has for the land to no avail and carries on tending to this land that isn’t his. Here the story could end - Bull would persist on and be happy, though his gruff exterior wouldn’t let on - and no play or movie would be required. But when a smooth American played by Tom Berenger comes on the scene with money to spend and intentions do so McCabe’s simple plans go enormously awry. The field goes on the market for public auction as the widow changes her tune from ‘I won’t sell’, to ‘I’ll sell to whomever, whenever as long as the price is right’. The combination of the auction and the American trigger turmoil and all the formerly contented townsfolk can’t keep to themselves. Meanwhile Bull and his son Tadgh (Sean Bean) decide to settle the score and keep their land...

...“Field of Bull” Realism is all about showing the truth. A realist will try to defend the assumptions that their film ideas are not influenced, but are a true mirror of the actual world. We rarely notice the style in a realistic movie; they often aim for a gritty look, with the idea that if it’s too pretty, it’s false. Their films are about everyday people and everyday situations. At the opposite side of realism, we have Formalism. Formalist directors have no desire to show reality. They want to show their personal vision of the world and how they want their audience to view it. They are concerned with mythical and spiritual truths that can best be represented by distorting the image of reality. Classicism to bring in a third theory is all about ideal storytelling, it lies somewhere in between realism and formalism. (Understanding Movies 5) The goal of a classicist is to tell a story in the best way possible. They want you to get caught up in the characters and their problems, to feel what they feel, but not be distracted by the filmmaking techniques. The two films we screened in class Bull Durham directed by Ron Shelton, and Field of Dreams based on the novel Shoeless Joe directed by Phil Alden Robinson both demonstrate these film theories throughout their movies but in a very different matter. Bull Durham is a great realistic example of what the sport of baseball means to the men who play it. It's all about the dreams, the desire to compete, and the ultimate goal to one day...

...The Story of Ferdinand is a story about a very strong and underestimated bull named Ferdinand. The story takes place in a field in Spain that holds many bulls, including Ferdinand. Ferdinand is just not like the other little bulls though. He likes to pick and play with flowers under his favorite cork tree. This is happening while all the other little bulls are fighting and showing off their strength. Even though Ferdinand grows to be bigger and stronger than the other bulls, he still does not want to play with the other bulls and instead wishes to continue smelling the followers and enjoying nature under his favorite cork tree. Throughout the story, archetypes such as the loner or an outcast, the hero and symbolism are observed that connect...

...categorizes, questions, and attacks the academic arrogance that surrounds the age-old learning style of curriculum based instruction that is used throughout school systems. He uses key terms such as bull and cow. Besides, he uses emotive language that makes the essay rich of knowledge. He discusses the problem of the theory of knowledge in terms of grading "bull" and what he names "cow." The incident that impelled him to write is interesting. Briefly, one Mr. Metzger (a pseudonym for a Harvard student, class of '47) rocketed to celebrity/notoriety after impulsively and for no apparent reason taking an exam under the name Smith in a social science course for which he was not registered and which he had never attended. Cheerfully, I gather, he wrote an essay discussing a book he had never read. The scandal resulted when, because a real Smith was absent, Metzger's essay was graded and returned-with an A - . It is relevant to the resultant controversy that a conscientious friend of Metzger who had taken the course received a C+. Perry rose to the defense of the hapless section leader responsible by examining what he saw as the fundamental purpose of the university: that it "should teach students how to think; not only in their own fields but in fields outside their own.... Here then, good bull [such as Metzger had written] appears not as ignorance at all but as an aspect of knowledge." Perry intentionally creates...

While the primary shots of the Common War were discharged at Post Sumter in April 1861, the occasions of that decisive July 21 involved the main genuine skirmish of the war, The Principal Clash of Bull Run. We should take in more about this critical Common War fight. In the spring of 1861, war fever was grasping both the North and the South. The withdrawal winter had finished with seven Southern states...

...The two pieces I’m going to compare and contrast are both similar, but different at the same time. I chose the painting by Jacques Raymond Brascassat called “A Bull Fight” while at the museum. Then I went home to research other paintings on the museums website and chose “A Gust of Wind” by Gustave Courbet. In my essay I’ll discuss what makes them similar art pieces and how they compare different to each other. Plus, I will describe how each painting used the same visual elements, but also very different ones at the same time. The first painting I will be discussing is “A Bull Fight” by Jacques- Raymond Brascassat which will show the information on how the painting was composed. And it will discuss the differences in this painting compared...

...Annotated Bibliography Pit bulls can be excellent family pets as long as their owners give them plenty of exercise, socialize them with people and other dogs, and give them obedience training. Gorant, J. (2010). The Lost Dogs. New York, New York: Penguin Group Inc. The author details what became of the fifty-one pit bulls that were rescued from Michael Vick’s house at 1915 Moonlight Road due to dog fighting. This case changed how dogs seized in dogfighting rings were evaluated. Before this case the dogs were never given the chance for rehabilitation, they was just euthanized. Twenty-two of the most aggressive dogs was sent to The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Only six remain in the sanctuary of the twenty-two. They have since been adopted. Of the fifty-one dogs a few could not be saved and were euthanized. All the rest of the dogs were either adopted, rescue dogs, therapy dogs, or remain at a sanctuary. This book is a secondary source as the writer retells the events that happened. I think this source is reliable because it explains the aspects of the case and what happened to the dogs. I think that it will be helpful to my final project because it details the steps needed to prove that fighting dogs can be saved, and are not vicious by nature. Holland, J. (2013). ...Weaponry Since many of the soldiers who participated in the first battle of Bull Run were state volunteers, they were armed with whatever the state government provided them. Many soldiers were issued smooth bore weapons at the beginning of the war. As it progressed, more and more soldiers were armed with rifled weapons, being more accurate and far superior to smooth bore rifles. For the past 150 years, the soldier’s weapon of choice was the .69 caliber smooth bore musket. These rifles were inaccurate and did not have an effective killing range (100-200 yards). A lot of luck went into the soldier’s marksmanship. In the days prior, Napoleonic tactics were commonplace on the battlefield. In this fashion, soldiers lined up side by side and fired a volley of lead into the enemy’s direction, each rank taking turns to reload while the other fired. This tactic was effective in its own right, causing high casualties to both sides. During the civil war however, good soldiers were hard to find, and advancements in technology allowed them to use tactics and weaponry that helped keep soldiers alive on the battlefield. Advancements in the weaponry used during the First battle of the Bull Run made a significant difference in many aspects of the battle. Rifles used in the battle looked identical to the ones previously used, but with one key change: rifling. Rifled weapons have groves cut inside the barrel that cause the projectile to spin as it leaves the muzzle of the weapon. This barrel groove...

...Pitbull Behavior Modification Jason M. Cox Ohio Christian University April 9th , 2016 Dog lovers and professional trainers alike often say there is no such thing as bad dogs, only bad dog owners. Today, the dog that gets the most attention on this topic is the Pit Bull. "The Pit Bull wasn't always synonymous with being a bad dog, by nature, they are in fact very smart, fun loving, and affectionate, thus make great family dogs". (Delise, 2007). But every decade has its ‘bad dog'. Back in the Seventies, the Doberman was the tough guy's dog of choice. In the Eighties, it was the Rottweiler. Since the Nineties, it's been the Pit Bull. The problem is that it's maintained this image a lot longer than other tough dog breeds because they have what behaviorists call ‘a soft temperament.' This means that they are easy to handle and look a lot meaner than they are. There are different reasons why people acquire dogs. Some want a companion or family pet. But there are also people who want guard dogs and a dog that appeals to their dangerous image. "You can train a dog to do anything, even to be nasty and vicious, the biggest problem currently facing Pit Bulls is when people with the wrong intentions get one, they don't know what they are really getting into and can't be bothered with any training. That's when bad situations arise. And as a result, the dog lands in a shelter" (O'Heare, 2014). According to O'Heare (2014), anyone who has a dog has to consider himself or herself the...

...held company saw sales in Brazil grow by 32 per cent, while Turkish and Japanese consumers increased their intake by more than 80 per cent. Overall, the group posted sales last year of €3.78bn ($5.17bn), compared with €3.26bn a year earlier. In spite of its size, however, the group is still steeped in the sort of folklore and philosophical quackery that most large multinationals eschew in favour of efficiency of production. In one example of the group’s unusual approach to mass production, the caps on its bottled mineral water can be sealed only on nights when the moon is full in the sky. This is the kind of behaviour that could infuriate shareholders of a publicly listed company. Mr Mateschitz is unambiguous about the likelihood of Red Bull appearing on the stock market in the future, however. “Never. Thanks to our financial philosophy, we are not and never have been in need of additional capital, nor does anybody want to cash in. If we were to go public, the company would lose all of its benefits and in turn we would be left with numerous disadvantages,” he says. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/8733b030-de30-11e0-9fb7-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1nQrxHXt1 Some observers say that Red Bull's branding is revolutionary, calling it an 'anti-brand' strategy. The company faced additional problems in Pakistan where there were already many established drinks available. The firm avoided usual methods of marketing, relying more on what is called 'buzz marketing' or word-of-mouth. A brand image...

In the movie, Field of Dreams we can see this idea play out throughout the whole film. The first example of this idea of redemption is for Shoeless Joe Jackson. Joe was a baseball player in the early 20th century for the Chicago White Sox. He was considered a great baseball player whose career was cut short after being implicated in the Black Sox Scandal in 1919. He was associated with other players who had intentionally thrown games for profit. Now over...

...Alaska has many species of Bear, Caribou, and some of the world largest moose. Heavy bodied and long-legged, moose are the largest members of the deer family. They range in color from golden brown to almost black, depending upon the season and the age of the animal. Full grown male bulls stand almost 6 feet tall at the shoulder, and bulls in prime condition weigh from 1,200 to 1,600 lbs. Adult females or cows are somewhat smaller and weigh 800 to 1,300 lbs. A 1,600-lb moose will field dress out at about 950 lbs, yielding approximately 500 lbs of meat. Alaskans and nonresidents annually harvest 6,000 to 8,000 moose, which translates into about 3.5 million pounds of usable meat. Only bull moose have antlers. The largest moose antlers in North America come from Alaska, the Yukon Territory, and the Northwest Territories of Canada. Trophy class bulls are found throughout Alaska, but the largest come from the western portion of the state. Moose occasionally produce trophy-size antlers when they are 6 or 7 years old, with the largest antlers grown at approximately 10 – 12 years of age. In the wild, moose rarely live more than 16 years. Moose are generally associated with northern forests in North America, Europe, and Russia. In Europe, they are called "elk." In Alaska, they thrive in suitable habitat from the Stikine River of Southeast Alaska to the Colville River on the Arctic Slope. They are most abundant in recently burned areas that contain willow and birch shrubs, on timberline...
