...Sentence Outline Narrowed Down Topic: Fanfiction: A Creative Platform for Writers I. Introduction A. Introductory Device B. Thesis Statement People should have the liberty to write fanfiction, because it is an opportunity for enthusiastic writers to develop their writing abilities, it is an outlet for writers to explore endless possibilities in creating derived compositions, and lastly it is an activity to simply enjoy oneself considering it is a non-profit activity that brings forth intercommunication within a certain fandom, though sometimes fanfiction may affect an author’s capability to produce their own stories. II. Background A. Morrison (2012) states in The Guardian that fanfiction officially started, in the modern times, during the mid 50’s and 60’s with the growth of television expanding, more people wanted to create what-if stories with their favourite characters through writing. B. According to Schaffner (2009), fanfiction are stories ripped off from other people's work, so fanfiction is a free form, innovatory or derivative textual work that fanfiction practitioners publish online. C. Alter (2012) writes in her article that fan fiction is still a sensitive subject for writers and publishers; while some see it as free marketing and others regard it as a derivative dreck at best and copyright infringement at worst. III. Body A. Writing fanfiction is an opportunity for enthusiastic writers to develop their writing abilities. 1.) Buroker (2013) an official...

...energy and very short wavelengths, which are not visible to the human eye. In 1913, an American radiologist named Gustav Bucky made the very first radiographic grid. With one-hundred radiologists per million Americans, approximately eighty-percent of radiologists are men. Full-time radiologists average a fifty-hour work week. The top four areas of radiology consist of: body cross/abdomen imaging, interventional/vascular imaging, breast imaging/women’s imaging, and neuroradiology. Before your examination, a radiographer will explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you may have. A Radiologic Technologist is a skilled professional with specialized education of anatomy, radiation protection, patient care, radiation exposure, and positioning. It is part of their duty to determine how much radiation is necessary to produce a diagnostic image. Radiographic testing is a non-destructive testing that uses X-rays and/or Gamma-rays for detecting internal imperfections and for detecting corrosion. Over the years cardiac imaging has undergone revolutionary development during recent decades. Coronary angioplasty and subsequent introduction of non-invasive imaging techniques for imaging of the heart such as: echocardiography, Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Computed Tomography (CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), all of which have resulted in advanced diagnosis and monitoring of cardiovas-cular disease. ...Chapter 8: Aerial photograph interpretation Introduction Almost all modern topographic maps and many other types such as those depicting geology, natural vegetation, and landuse, are based on information obtained from aerial photography. In this chapter we will consider how aerial photograph surveys are flown and then we will examine the photogrammetric properties of single aerial photographs and of stereopairs. We will conclude our discussion by considering how aerial photographs are used in the interpretation of cultural features. In Canada most aerial photography is obtained by air-survey companies under contract to various Federal or Provincial government agencies. All of Canada has been photographed from the air, some of it many times over at different scales and in different seasons and years going back to the late 1920's. Federal aerial photographs (and maps) are available from the Canada Map Office and the National Air Photo Library (both at 615 Booth St., Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0E9) while the appropriate Provincial agency in British Columbia is Maps B.C. (Ministry of Environment, Parliament Buildings, Victoria, British Columbia V8V 1X5). Aerial photographs often are used in the same manner as maps and it might be useful if we note at the start the advantages and limitations of each medium. An aerial photograph has the following advantages over a line map: 1. It is a pictorial representation of the ground that shows far greater detail than a line map. This distinction...

...MODULE C – History and Memory Sample 1 How has your understanding of events, personalities or situations been shaped by their representations in the texts you have studied. Refer to your prescribed text and at least TWO other related texts of your own choosing. History can be defined as “the methodical record of public events” where memory is defined as “the faculty by which events are recalled or kept in mind”. Thus history and memory interrelate as history can be seen as the contextual justification for memory. “The Fiftieth Gate” is a poignant interweaving of history and memory. The text follows protagonist, Mark Baker an historian, son of Holocaust survivors Genia and Yossl (Joe), on an historical journey through memory, to uncover the origins of his past and act as a catalyst for future generations to also connect with their history. Mark Baker’s journey through history and memory is also executed through his conventional ideas that memory is biased and less valid than history. There are numerous references to the discrepancies between the personal memories of his parents and the documented history Mark as an historian believes. In this way it is apparent that Mark is on a quest for verification, “my facts from the past are different”. This displays the flaw Mark traditionally notes in memory and his need for historical evidence. As responders accompany Mark on his journey, they also encounter the complexity of simultaneously being a son and an historian. This...

...Critical Thinking Student Development Unit 2005/06 [pic] [pic] Welcome! This booklet contains all the handouts and information that you will need for the Critical Thinking workshop held at the Student Development Unit. As well as the exercises we’ll be working on during the session, you will also find guidance that you can keep for future reference, such as advice on active learning and intelligence, models for critical thinking skills, and questions to help you think critically. When you are asked to complete an academic assignment, your tutor will be looking for evidence of these three skills: • Gathering of complex material • Making sense of that complex material • Communicating your understanding of that complex material to an informed reader.[1] The ‘making sense’ stage is the one we tend to neglect out of fear that we may not have anything of value to contribute. But, as the eminent thinker Edward De Bono puts it: ‘Thinking is a skill that can be improved by training, by practice and through learning how to do it better. Thinking is no different from any other skill and we can get better at the skill of thinking if we have the will to do so.’[2] We hope that this handbook will help you to develop strongly argued and well-structured pieces of work, and encourage you to build critical thinking into every aspect of your academic life. Be prepared to make some changes to how you work – if you always...

...1984 George Orwell 1949 Chapter 1 It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him. The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it a coloured poster, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. It depicted simply an enormous face, more than a metre wide: the face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features. Winston made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. It was part of the economy drive in preparation for Hate Week. The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. On each landing, opposite the lift-shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran. Inside the flat a fruity voice was reading out a list of figures which had something to do with the production of pig-iron. The voice came from an oblong metal plaque like a dulled mirror which...

...The Lake Poets The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge hone his craft. Troubled by debt, though, he left Cambridge in 1793 and enlisted in the 15th Dragoons, a British army regiment, under the alias Silas Tomkyn Comberbache. After being rescued by his brothers, Coleridge returned to Cambridge, but he left again, in 1794, without having earned a degree. That year, Coleridge met the author Robert Southey, and together they dreamed about establishing a utopian community in the Pennsylvania wilderness of America. Southey, however, backed out of the project, and their dream was never realized. notable quote “No man was ever yet a great poet, without being at the same time a profound philosopher.” fyi Did you know that Samuel Taylor Coleridge . . . • developed a fascination with the supernatural at age five? • was known as a brilliant and captivating conversationalist? • was the most influential literary critic of his day? • liked to write poetry while walking? ...ELECTRIC JACQUARDS: THE FIRST HUNDRED YEARS K. Hepworth Department of Textile Industries University of Leeds Leeds LS2 9JT 1 Introduction. The recent widespread use of computers and colour monitors in the representation and development of weave structures and in the simulation of colour-and-weave effects has encouraged loom manufacturers to complete the chain of automation of fabric production by developing computer-controllable shedding mechanisms. These mostly take the form of electromagnetically actuated dobbies, although some jacquards are also available. Although activity in this field has accelerated during the past twenty years or so there is a history of over a hundred and thirty years of development of electric jacquards for weaving. It is apparent that almost as soon as the jacquard was established there was a desire to reduce the bulk and weight of the punched cards used for programming it and the expense of punching, linking and storing them. By 1833 a two-stage mechanism had been described that enabled a continuous band of paper to be substituted for the cards but punching was still needed. By the middle of the century an electrically conductive program, on which areas could be obscured by insulating paint, was being proposed in conjunction with electromagnetic methods of hook selection and at least one demonstrably operable machine resulted. By the end of the century photographically prepared programs of a similar kind were being proposed albeit with a somewhat...
