War destroys many things including life. The Civil War destroyed the U.S. as a nation. The whole cause of this was slavery. In 1861, Texas joined in the fight as a confederate state. The Civil War: Why did Texans fight? The Texans fought in the Civil war because of state’s rights, preserving slavery, and love for Texas. First of all, the Texans fought because of state’s rights. “This is a union of equal states, and no state can force another state either to remain in it or withdraw from it” (Document C). Texas didn’t want the slave taken away from them because they helped with the agricultural work on the plantations. “The slave population in 1860 is 182,566, the percentage of slaves is 30%, and the percentage of white families that owned slaves is 29% in Texas alone” (Document A). A Lot of families relied on slaves to get their work done so they didn’t want the south to lose. “That the African race had no (part) in their establishment; that they were rightfully held as an inferior and dependent race….” (Document B). Texas thought that the Africans are useless and not important. Most importantly, the Texans fought in the Civil war because of their love for Texas. “Tell him not to inlist till just before they go to draft him and only enlist for Texas service” (Document D). Texans loved Texas and they didn’t want to fight for any other state. “... Tell Lissy not to talk to me about marrying up here, for if I ever marry it will be in Texas, I think” (Document D).
