In 1418 Filippo Brunelleschi began one of the most advanced architectural projects at that time, completing the dome on the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore.

Brunelleschi's motivation stemmed primarily from a personal interest in how things work. From the source, we learn that he was an avid study in architecture, and was a master of drawing and painting, wood carving, sculpture in silver and bronze, stone setting, niello, and enamel work. He also studied gears and clocks and is said to have built the first alarm clock in history.
