Bad Sugar
This essay will discuss the health factors that I felt influenced the Tohono O’odham and Achimel O’odham (Pima) tribes in the documentary, “ Bad Sugar.” The health factors that I will be discussing are geographic challenges and socioeconomic factors.
Geographic factors
The Tohono O’odham and Achimel O’odham (Pima) tribes settled in Southwestern Arizona where the Gila River streamed through their land as a primary source of water for the tribe and their farmlands that provided them with natural unprocessed foods. The geographical conditions of the Tohono O’odham and Achimel O’odham (Pima) tribes seemed ideal at the time. They had access to The Gila River, ability to grow natural foods and plenty of land; but their location quickly …show more content…
Over time it became impossible for the Tohono and Pima tribes to sustain their crop since colonizers diverted the majority of waters from the Gila River away from the tribes farmlands to their own. According the California Newsreel (2008), “The tribes then had to rely on ration provided by the US that did not contain quality food but processed food such as lard, gravy and white bread. The tribes with lack of transportation due to poverty only had access to one grocery store since the other store was a 1 hour round …show more content…
In this framework, institutionalized racism is defined as differential access to the goods, services, and opportunities of society by race. Institutionalized racism is normative, sometimes legalized, and often manifests as inherited disadvantage. It is structural, having been codified in our institutions of custom, practice, and law, so there need not be an identifiable perpetrator. Indeed, institutionalized racism is often evident as inaction in the face of need. (Jones, 2000, p. 1212)
The Tohono O’odham and Pima tribes like every other American should have the right to have the proper amount of resources to improve their health outcomes in their tribes. When the Coolidge Dam was built the goal was sealed with a passed peace pipe to President Coolidge a promise that the Tohono O’odham and Pima tribes would have access to water so they could thrive and start working to get back their culture and health this did not happen. Instead the rest of Arizona gained access to the water provided by the Coolidge Dam and the Tohono O’odham and Pima tribes continued on for decades with little to no

The Effects of Sugar

...Big Question   * How do different colas break down the enamel on our teeth? * Which Cola is the most corrosive to our teeth? Hypothesis and Explanation  * If an egg shell is put in cola, then the egg shell will become discolored and thin. It will be broken down because of the sugars, carbonation, and acid. The cola will have a similareffect on human  teeth as it does on the egg shells.   My Interesting Facts  * Soda discolors our teeth. * Soda wears away the enamel on your teeth and makes them weak. * The Coca Cola left a film in the jar.  * Phosphoric acid is also found in milk, meats, and grains.  * Phosphoric acid has very little effect on our teeth. * The saliva in our mouth helps neutralize the acid in the soda, therefore acid has littleeffect on our teeth. Experiment:   Materials Needed and Instructions for the Experiment   * Materials: * 5 egg shells. Wash and cleaned of the egg whites and yokes * 5 mason jars with lids           5 cola brands. * Coca Cola * Dr. Pepper * Pepsi * Diet Coke * Big K Cola  * Masking tape to label each jar. * Log book.            This is how I conducted the experiment. I began by pouring one can of each of the sodas into each of the mason jars. Then I had my mom crack five eggsand wash out the egg whites and yokes. I then placed each of the shells into each of the five colas. I put a lid on each of the jars to help keep out any extra germs...

...Analysis of an argument 1. The following appeared as part of an annual report sent to stockholders by Olympic Foods, a processor of frozen foods. “Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they become more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five-day service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its twenty-fifth birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to minimize costs and thus maximize profits.” Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion. Citing facts drawn from the color-film processing industry that indicate a downward trend in the costs of film processing over a 24-year period, the author argues that Olympic Foods will likewise be able to minimize costs and thus maximize profits in the future. In support of this conclusion...

This case study shows how the company has achieved these goals in a difficult trading environment. ...An analysis of generic conventions with specific reference to the movie trailers Snatch and RockNRolla The aim of this analysis is to explore the different types of generic conventions with specific reference to “Snatch” and “RocknRolla”. Within this assignment I will look at the generic conventions of crime thrillers. I will focus on aspects such as typical situations, stock characters, style, iconography and setting. One of the most popular genres is crime, according to Stankic (2004) and Neale (2000) crime genre can have 3 other categories which have similar characteristics but different stories. These are called subgenres (insert quote) these are; detective, thriller and gangster genre. Crime genre (insert quote) The first trailer I will analyse is the crime thriller ‘Snatch’ released in 2000, which has a very gritty, de-saturated and dull look, it has a low-key lighting and numerous use of the chiascuros effect connoting this idea of a double identity or a dark side which is common in British gangster movies. It contains dark humour and historic references suggesting that it is targeted at a more mature audience aged 16-24. The non-diegetic music playing in the background is very high paced which adds momentum, the electric guitar pinches which is found in action movies connotes the idea that our stock characters might part-take on a mission, which is a typical situation that you find in heist movies. The beatboxing and drums are common elements that...

Obesity in America

...overweight child or adult? Do your thoughts lead you to automatically blame the individual for not being more physically active, eating correctly, or do you blame the parents for not monitoring the consumption of the child? It is easy to automatically draw judgment on those that are overweight in our society because, although obesity is more prevalent in our society, it is still seen as socially unacceptable. This paper will seek to understand the contributing factors to obesity as external, internal, or environmental. Obesity in America A Family Epidemic In addressing the problem we must first discuss the main points that are essential to understanding why obesity is increasing in the U.S. and most of all among our children. The initial analysis of environment, choice of nutritious meals, as well as the influence of society will provide insight to the cause as well as the solution to the obesity epidemic. Once examined the data will prove the argument presented at hand. The main contributors to obesity among adults but especially among youth are, environmental factors, lack of choosing nutritious meals, portion distortion and the factor that fuels all of these, advertising media. So what defines an individual as being obese? Childhood Obesity Action Coalition-OAC.( n.d.) states “A child is defined as “obese” if their body mass index-for-age (or BMI-for-age) percentile is greater than 95 percent. Effective Study Skills Are the Sole Foundation of a Sound Education

...Critical Thinking Student Development Unit 2005/06 [pic] [pic] Welcome! This booklet contains all the handouts and information that you will need for the Critical Thinking workshop held at the Student Development Unit. As well as the exercises we’ll be working on during the session, you will also find guidance that you can keep for future reference, such as advice on active learning and intelligence, models for critical thinking skills, and questions to help you think critically. When you are asked to complete an academic assignment, your tutor will be looking for evidence of these three skills: • Gathering of complex material • Making sense of that complex material • Communicating your understanding of that complex material to an informed reader.[1] The ‘making sense’ stage is the one we tend to neglect out of fear that we may not have anything of value to contribute. But, as the eminent thinker Edward De Bono puts it: ‘Thinking is a skill that can be improved by training, by practice and through learning how to do it better. Thinking is no different from any other skill and we can get better at the skill of thinking if we have the will to do so.’[2] We hope that this handbook will help you to develop strongly argued and well-structured pieces of work, and encourage you to build critical thinking into every aspect of your academic life. Be prepared to make some changes to how you work – if you always...
