Beowulf is the great Anglo-Saxon hero who represents all that is good in the world and fights to protect the innocent. Beowulf goes out to battle monsters like Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the firedrake to keep the people safe. This part of the story will always remain the same and will never change. However, when comparing the poem to the film there are in fact both similarities and substantial changes. Some will change and adjust rather easily while others may not be so lucky and have to struggle to make their lives better. In times of hardship and poverty, the determined will do anything they can for relief, money, power and overall success. Three films that demonstrate this are The Grapes of Wrath, El Norte, and City of God. In these films, characters struggle to find their idea of “paradise” or their “Promised Land”. The Grapes of Wrath is a film about a family who is forced off of their farms and out of their home due to the immense draught that has plagued the Midwest during the Great Depression. The actors in this film were not made up to look like the typical perfect Hollywood type. They look like real farmers and hardworking people and the lighting is manipulated to show this. The family, the Joad’s, travel from Oklahoma all the way to California when they hear about the jobs and opportunities out there. They stop to work small farming and harvesting jobs along the way but never make enough money. ...The Giver - Film/Novel Comparison Fiona from the book The Giver, is very laid back and is a supporting character in the book, while in the film version she is made into this love interest. She also completely changed jobs in the community, which actually resulted in different endings for each the book and movie. Although she is the same dialogue-wise, her personality even somewhat changed from book to movie. Fiona in the book was never a love interest, she was always a best friend and just supported Jonas. The reason I believe they changed her into a love interest is because they were increasing everyone’s age and it gave a more memorable ending to the movie. The book just cut off after he gets to the bottom of the hill. It was never said what happened to Fiona after Jonas leaves the community. She just disappears and isn’t in the book anymore. Fiona was a caregiver in the book and took care of the old people. In the movie, they completely went to the opposite side of the spectrum and she was a nurturer and took care of newchildren. It makes sense that they made the decision to give her a very caring, sweet job with the newchildren. ...The movie “Footloose” is a story of love, rebellion, music and dance that is a classic for most of us. It is one of those movies you typically do not make it through your teen years without watching. The original was filmed in 1984 and remained the only version till 2011. Often, remakes do no justice to the original, however this is not the case, shockingly enough with this movie. Although the remake of “Footloose” remains loyal to the elements of the original movie, the remake adds detail to the story which increases the viewer’s emotional connection to the story line and characters. The remake of Footloose introduces antecedent to the plot of the movie in the beginning of the movie and with more detail as opposed to the original, which discusses it part way through the movie. The remake begins with a party scene with the actors dancing along to the song Footloose, consuming alcohol and then some party goers getting into a car, driving off and colliding with a box style truck. The accident happened with-in the first five minutes of the movie and was quite shocking as it happened so fast. Viewers are left in absolute stun but if you watched the original, this accident scene made sense. In contrast, the Original movie does not adequately set the stage to why music and dancing were banned. ...Sister Flowers / Someone’s Mother In this essay we will discuss the comparison and contrast of two stories, Sister Flowers and Someone’s Mother. One of the easiest comparisons is that both of these stories were written in the first person by the authors. In Sister Flowers the author tells a tale of the struggle she had dealing with a traumatic event. In the same way, Someone’s Mother tells of the struggle the author had in leaving an elderly woman lost and alone. Also, both stories show a person’s genuine concern to help someone in need.
