...Part One * You are the news director of a local television station. The city council has just voted to close city parks 3 days a week to save money. Meanwhile, a major celebrity has died. The park story has greater effect on your viewers, but the celebrity death will get bigger ratings? Which do you make your lead story and why? For some unknown reason, news has become more than a center of information. It has become the platform of entertainment. Ratings have increased when the news includes celebrity highlights or “gossip.” This is where it gets hard as a news director. Trying to make the best judgment to not jeopardize ratings but to also be informative. Standing between what affects the viewer and what will bring more rating to the station. This is where as a director I would have to play it smart. There are a couple of things to keep in mind. One is the fact that there are important things going on in the city that the citizens need to be aware of. Some people work hard and as a result don’t have the time to sit down and read a newspaper even if is online. They depend solemnly on the night news. Then we have on the other side the ones that like news that pertain only about entertainment, and this is where it gets tough. In order to keep both parties happy you try to come up with something to catch the attention of both types of viewers. Having a good marketing team that learns how to capture the different viewers attention is the key to these kinds of situations...

...develops with a fellow patient named Aubrey. As can be expected, Grant has to struggle to come to terms with this new relationship and with Fiona’s fading memory. Although Julie Christie has been widely recognized for her performance (nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, winner of the BAFTA, Golden Globe, and National Board of Review, Screen Actors Guild for the same, as well as numerous film critics societies), and not to take anything away from that, the story is driven by Gordon Pinsent’s performance (he won the award for Outstanding Male Performance from the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television, and Radio Artists…they’re version of the SAG Awards). Also of note is Olympia Dukakis playing Marian, Aubrey’s wife, as she also needs to adjust to life with her husband, whom she has brought home from the nursing home. And speaking of her husband, Michael Murphy plays a daring role, not speaking a word as Aubrey. It is a real shame that there is no Oscar category for ensemble cast. Somewhat reminiscent of the closing scenes of The Notebook, this film is much deeper, much more emotional. It shows the true effects...

...A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a series of still images which when they are passed past a projector gives the viewer the impression of movement. A film is produced by recording photographic images with a camera, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. The process of filmmaking has developed into an art form and industry. Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating – or indoctrinating – citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue into the language of the viewer. Films are made up of a series of individual images called frames. When these images are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring. The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision, whereby the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Viewers perceive motion due to a psychological effect called beta movement. The origin of the name "film" comes from the fact that photographic film (also called film stock) has historically been the primary medium for recording and displaying motion pictures...

Making a Plan

...Preparing to Conduct Business Research Preparing to Conduct Business Research Movie theatre owners are preparing to conduct research to find out how to stop movie goers from brining their own food into the theatre, instead of purchasing the products from the concession stands inside the theatre. Business research is an important tool used to provide essential information to a company to ensure their success. There are key steps in the research process such as research questions, hypotheses, variables, ethical considerations; as well as discussing the significance, scope, magnitude, and feasibility of finding a solution to the issue, opportunity, or problem. Research Questions 1. Is it ethical to sneak snacks into a movie theater? 2. What happens if a person gets caught sneaking snacks into a movie theater? 3. Why does the food at movie theaters cost so much? 4. How do movie theaters make their money? Going to the movies has become an extravagant commodity. The sale of a movie ticket have gone up and doubled in price. An individual looks for ways to downplay the expenses of a day at the movies. Sometimes a person just wants to sit back and enjoy a snack and a drink while watching a movie, but does not want to pay the high price for it. Art and the Masses

...not resonate with that quote entirely,I surely believe that you need not have a mass appeal to be classified as an artistic beauty. .For example, the critically acclaimed film,'Memento' did not rope in good box office collection .But once critics and patrons of artistic cinema profoundly appreciated this film in the media, there was a good increase in the home video sales.Masses are easily influenced by mouth talk. There are plenty other films which truly move our soul upon watching but fail miserably at the box office .That's because majority of the masses view art as a business. As a source of entertainment.Sure, entertainment can be subjective. But for the majority of them,it's just sheer prosaic films with action set pieces or laughter riot. Art is subjective.my friends and I do not enjoy watching classic European paintings of the 60's and 70's.But my father finds it thoroughly entertaining. The way all 5 fingers aren't the same, every art piece cannot be appreciated by everybody. That does not make it unworthy of greatness. At the same time, art pieces with universal mass appeal need not be the greatest work of art. Another observation of mine is that, unless you adore the profession or yourself are into work, one cannot judge the artistic quality. For an aspiring filmmaker like myself, watching Art films like 'Tree of life' or 'Ship of Theseus' feels amazing. But ,will my friends want to spend a considerable amount of money and time on art flicks or a medieval age museum...

Using the Porter’s Five Forces model, Netflix can examine its advantages and disadvantages see whether entering China is good choice: * Bargaining power of customers China has a growing economy with a large group of new middle-class, who are able and willing to consume on entertainment. Nowadays, Chinese usually watch films on free websites with a low picture quality and slow Internet speed. While the number of people watching films are increasing, the picture quality is becoming more important for the viewing experience. Providing a fast, flexible and high-quality service, Netflix can persuade many customers into its subscription model. * Bargaining power of suppliers: China’s film and TV show makers have been facing a major problem: plagiarizing (including unpaid online watching), which substantially decreases their profits. They are finding a pathway to introduce their product to the customers. The advantages of plagiarizing products are the cheap prices and convenience, which Netflix can also provide. Netflix should cooperate with Chinese filmmakers to gain sources of authorized edition film databases and get a lower price since the Chinese filmmakers are eager to run out of the bad...

It Is Only Worth Watching Movies That Can Teach Us Something About Real Life, Agree or Disagree?

...It is only worth watching movies that can teach us something about real life, agree or disagree? I don’t agree with this statement. In my opinion, all wovies can be,more or less, instructive and beneficial to us. Movies have become an important means of entertainment for modern people.Whether they are science fiction movies ,historical movies or movies that illustrate modern life, most of them are based on the prevailing social perspective and are consistent with our current value systems. When going to the theatre to spend a pleasant weekend,we don’t have to be too selective to watch movies which are meant to “teach” us.In fact, all movies can be,more or less, instructive and we are fully justified to choose whatever we like in the movie theatre. Different movies reflect various aspects of our real life. What we will learn from the movie all depends on how we comprehend these intructive information incorporated within the movies. Some people prefer to watch science fiction movies which not only fulfills their imagination for the future but also evokes their interest in real life science study;some people enjoy historical themes because they find many similarities between historical figure and contemporary people. They find most of the movie characters’ maneuvers still practical in real life;Others, including me,choose to watch movies that illustrate modern life.I discover many novelties from the movies:from basic physics principles in “The big bang theory”,to the breathtaking...

Response to "13, 1977, 21" by Jonathan Lethem

...Gonzalez “13, 1977, 21” In Jonathan Lethem’s personal narrative essay, “13, 1977, 21”, Lethem reflects on when he was 13 years old, in the year 1977, where he watched the film Star Wars 21 times. But the essay is not actually about the Star Wars film. It is about the way Lethem used going to the movies to remove himself, or “hide” from the realities of his life, such as his mother’s illness and awkward pre-teenage years. The first few sentences of Lethem’s essay is where he blatantly tells the readers that he’s watched Star Wars twenty-one times in four months. He then uses the next three paragraphs to reflect on the circumstances surrounding his trips to the movie theater in the summer of 1977 and trying to understand what triggered him to go all twenty-one times. He describes the theater he watched the film in, down to the street in Manhattan it was on, and the interior of the theatre, that he explains was “a superior place to watch anything”. He also mentions that getting into the theater itself was “an accomplishment, both elevating and slightly dangerous”. He describes the popularity of the film at the time, where he says “any kid with a television had brought a single ticket for the same film in a single summer”, but emphasizes that he was a part of the small percent that turned watching the film into a full blown obsession. In the second paragraph, Lethem questions why he even went all twenty-one times. He writes: “But what actually occurred within the secret...

Comprehensive Writing

...As the director of a local television station I have two breaking news stories to share with our viewers. I have decided to report about the vote of the city council to close the city parks three days a week to save money. The second story we will report on will be the death of a celebrity. I decided to go with the council vote as my lead story because of the impact it has on the local population. Closing down the parks for three days will force the parents to find alternative places for their children to play. In today’s society children recreation is defined by Xbox, Wii and PlayStation. With rise of obesity among our children limiting the availability of the parks for the sake of money is poor politics. The city council should reconvene to find new approaches to saving money besides closing city parks. One submission is that we as a local television station can help promote a fund-raiser for the sole purpose of raising fund to keep the parks open for one or three of the days. Reporting on the death of a celebrity does not have the local concern of effect of the city parks story. Another reason I have chosen to make this my secondary story is that this story will possibly be reported on a larger media outlet. As a local television media we believe committed to our hometown citizens should be focus. Also putting the celebrity’s death second still keep our local informed of national news. By us reporting about the death of the actor will still maintain...

Digital Transformation

...Digital transformation [pic] Summer 2008: Dramatic developments in digital technologies and the diffusion of the Internet protocol as an open and efficient communication standard are wiping out the specialized symbiotic link between content and technology. That’s how Gianvito Lanzolla and Jamie Anderson see the digital world, and here they reveal three trends that companies need to prepare for. Comments In the past, media and technology industries operated through specialized value chains with clearly defined boundaries. Mobile phones were used to make simple voice calls, Walkmans were used to play cassette tapes, and computers existed mainly to crunch data. But new technologies have made it possible to convert different kinds of content – a radio programme, a book, a magazine, a song, a phone call – into digital data; in digital terms, there is little difference between them. At the same time, the Internet and other communication networks based on Internet protocol have made it possible to distribute this digitized content in costeffective and ubiquitous ways. The extent and nature of these changes and their consequent strategic implications remain substantially misunderstood. While some studies have been made, they have mainly had an industry-specific focus, with the consequent limitation of overlooking the systemic effect of ongoing transformations. In order to address this limitation, we researched current transformations in media, telecommunications and technology...
