...Forrest Gump (1994) Film review and analysis Varga Noémi – HKDE13 The blockbuster movie Forrest Gump was made in the year 1994, and it was an American romantic-comedy-drama film that won multiple awards and nominations, including awards won from the 67th Academy Awards, 1995 Golden Globe Awards, 1995 MTV Movie Awards, 1995 People’s Choice Awards and various other ones. In 1996, a themed restaurant, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, opened based on the film and has since expanded to multiple locations worldwide. The scene of Gump running across the country is often referred to when real-life people attempt the feat. In 2011, the Library of Congress selected Forrest Gump for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It was an adaption of a novel of Forrest Gump, by Winston Groom. The film differs substantially from Winston Groom's novel, including Gump's personality and several events that were depicted. Robert Zemeckis was the director of the movie, and he made great decisions about the camera techniques to be used in each scene. The movie stars Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Mykelti Williamson, and Sally Field. Principal photography took place in late 1993, mainly in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Released in the United States on July 6, 1994, Forrest Gump became a commercial success as the top grossing film in North America released in that year. The story depicts several decades...

...Research Methods Christina Childs ENG 225 Introduction to Film Jenessa Gerling August 5, 2013 In the opening credits, there is a close up shot of a feather flying in the wind. Like one of Forrest Gump’s sayings, “Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you’re gonna get” the feather is also used as a symbol for Forrest’s life and the way he has come to look at the world. Although he had an IQ of 75, Forrest takes us on a journey through his accomplished life from the 1950’s to the 1980’s from being disabled as a child wearing braces on his legs to a wealthy businessman who ironically became involved in almost every major event in American history. The movie “Forrest Gump” is said to be a movie that makes you laugh, cry and think. In 1995, Robert Zemeckis, director of Forrest Gump won the Oscar for best achievement in directing and in his acceptance speech he thanks the “motion picture fans” by saying “In historic numbers you have embraced a film that at its heart offers a human life affirming hopeful story” as I agree that this movie has made a social impact on us all that have seen the movie. “Telling the story out of chronological order, jumping back and forth between the present and the past is in Non-linear order” (Goodykoontz, 2011). The movie begins with Forrest Gump played by Tom Hanks is sitting on a bench waiting for a bus. We don’t know why he’s sitting there but as he’s sitting, he is telling his life story to people who are waiting for the...

The review must include a thesis statement, introductory paragraph, and at least two supporting paragraphs. Discuss what the movie tells us about the society we live in. You may address whether you think it is good or bad, but you must address the big-picture issues, not just the quality of the work. Post your paper as an attachment. Forrest Gump “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get”, When you watch Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks as Forrest and Robin Wright as Jenny, him/her know that they are going to laugh and may even shed a few tears. The screenplay for the 1994 movie was written by Eric Roth, based on the novel by Winston Groom. The story follows Forrest through 30 years of trials and tribulations, placing Forrest within historical moments of history, and in pursuit of his one dream–his “most special friend,” Jenny. According to the Washington Post, Forrest Gump won Oscar awards for Best Picture, Best Actor (Hanks), Best Director (Robert Zemeckis), Film Editing, Visual Effects and Adapted Screenplay. The movie was well deserving of these awards since the acting and the visual effects were extraordinary. The film actors success in portraying their characters is a major factor in the film’s awards. The films’ actors success in portraying their characters is a major factor in the film’s awards. Tom Hanks and Robin Wright worked well together, just like “peas and carrots.” The on-screen chemistry between the two was phenomenal. I felt a real connection between the two, finding myself mad at Jenny when she blew Forrest off and in tears when he told her that he was heading to Vietnam. Mokui’s Movie Review states “Tom Hanks IS Forrest Gump…He breathes life into the guy and you will feel what Forrest feels” (1994, par 1). James Berardinelli states, “Robin Wright gives the best performance of her career, surpassing what she accomplished in The Playboys” (1994, par2)...

Any attempt to describe him will risk making the movie seem more conventional than it is, but let me try. It's a comedy, I guess. Or maybe a drama. Or a dream. The screenplay by Eric Roth has the complexity of modern fiction, not the formulas of modern movies. Its hero, played by Tom Hanks, is a thoroughly decent man with an IQ of 75, who manages between the 1950s and the 1980s to become involved in every major event in American history. And he survives them all with only honesty and niceness as his shields...

...Final Paper The topic I chose for this paper is The Blockbuster Mentality. In this case study, a list of the top 25 highest grossing films (in the U.S.) is given. It is noted that these films all have certain aspects in common. Most of them target younger audiences, are animated or include some type of special effects, and most are action films. Not only that, but the majority of these films also had a massive marketing campaign with fast food restaurants, action figures, and all sorts of other products. The question here is; why do all/most of the movies in this list contain the same attributes? Is it because these are the most popular types of films or because Hollywood continues to develop these types of movies? Finally, there are the foreign and independent film genres. As you can probably tell, foreign films are not produced in the United States and are instead produced in other countries. Independent films are not as self-explanatory. These movies are made by incredibly small studios with small budgets and often do not get recognized. All of these different aspects will be visited throughout this paper. First off, it is clear that many of these films share similar aspects and it could possibly be the leading reason as to why these movies are successful. Out of the top 25 list, the only movies that did not include animation or an extensive amount of special effects were Titanic and Passion of the Christ (I am not positive about the latter because I have never seen it...

...Strategic Computing and Communications Technology | | |New Trends in Product Placement | | | |Lilia Gutnik, Tom Huang, Jill Blue Lin, Ted Schmidt | |Spring 2007 | INTRODUCTION The traditional broadcast television advertising model is based on the 30-second ad that regularly interrupts TV shows. Most viewers find these ads boring and intrusive, but until recently were forced to endure them in order to watch the show. With the advent of digital video recording (DVR) and the growing popularity of TiVo, television viewers are no longer a passive audience. DVR technology allows viewers to fast-forward or skip ads. According to a study done by the major television networks in 2005, 90% of viewers surveyed said they skipped all or most of the commercials. In addition, one of the most desirable demographics (18-34 year old males) are moving away from television all together, and spending more time using more interactive forms of media, such as video games. The peak time of day for game console usage coincides directly with primetime network programming, much to the chagrin of network executives as well as advertisers. Attempting to fight the...

...Analyzing films is considered an art form that attempts to “break up the whole to discover the nature proportion, function, and interrelationships of the parts” (Boggs and Petrie, 2008). Final Fantasy, the first CGI (computer generated image) film featuring synthetic human actors, opens with its protagonist, Dr. Aki Ross, surveying her barren, alien surroundings. Aki wakes from the recurring dream and looks out at earth from the window of her spaceship. As the music swells, our heroine wonders if she will be able to save the world from the “phantom” spirits that have invaded it. Two scenes later, we learn that the phantoms also have infected Aki, effectively linking the fate of the devastated planet with that of a beautiful, young though entirely computer-generated into a female body. I’m introducing the film by way of Aki’s dubiously raced, female body for two reasons. First, Hironobu Sakaguchi, its creator, director and producer has made it clear in press releases and the supplemental documentary on the special edition DVD that the film functions as a showcase for the protagonist. “Identifying the theme can be considered both the beginning and the end of film analysis” (Boggs and Petrie, 2008). According to Sakaguchi, Aki represents his mother (the two share the same name) and his coming to terms with her death (Pham, 2001). Second and more to the point of my essay, critical reception of the film places strong emphasis on the character, which often is treated as a metonym for...

...9-597-002 REV: JANUARY 8, 2002 SUSAN FOURNIER ROBERT J. DOLAN Launching the BMW Z3 Roadster January 1996 marked the beginning of Phase II of BMW of North America Inc.’s Z3 roadster introduction. Phase I had centered on the placement of the new $28,750 two-seat convertible in the James Bond hit movie, GoldenEye, which premiered several months earlier. While not yet critically evaluated, results of the “out-of-the-box” pre-launch campaign appeared very positive: word-ofmouth concerning the Z3 and the James Bond cross-promotion were favorable, and product orders far exceeded BMW’s initial expectations. The challenge now was to design a marketing program that would sustain product excitement until dealer product availability beginning in March. Phase II planning had to be undertaken within the context of other important events in the BMW product family: (1) the April launch of the redesigned 5-Series; and (2) the company’s role as “official international automotive sponsor” of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games, which would begin in earnest with the Olympic Torch Relay 5-Series event in June. While these other elements of the BMW product family clearly impacted the Z3, the marketing approach and ultimate results for the Z3 would influence the whole BMW operation in the United States. Dr. Helmut Panke, Chairman and CEO of BMW (U.S.) Holding Corp. since 1993, noted that the Z3 was destined to be “the first BMW not made by mythical little creatures in the Bavarian woods. This car...

Thus, it helped us further in realizing the importance of considering all the facets of a situation before giving out a judgement. Abstract Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 film directed by Danny Boyle based in Mumbai, India’s most popular metropolis. The movie was critically acclaimed in the western world as well as in India. It has been raking in millions of dollars all over the world for the past year. However, in India, Slumdog Millionaire (or its Hindi version Slumdog Crorepati) wasn’t able to replicate the commercial success that it enjoyed internationally. It has been subjected to a number of criticisms, notably regarding how it portrays Indian society and the alleged exploitation of some of the actors. Whether...

In 1941, that film was Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane. Welles produced, directed, wrote, and starred in the movie at age twenty-five, playing a newspaper magnate from a young man to old age. While the movie was not a commercial success initially (powerful newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, whose life was the inspiration for the movie, tried to suppress it), it was critically praised for its acting, story, and directing. Citizen Kane’s dramatic camera angles, striking film noir–style lighting, nonlinear storytelling, montages, and long deep-focus shots were considered technically innovative for the era. Over time, Citizen Kane became revered as a masterpiece, and in 1997 the American Film Institute named it the Greatest American Movie of All Time. “Citizen Kane is more than a great movie; it is a gathering of all the lessons of the emerging era of sound,” film critic Roger Ebert wrote.1 CHAPTER 6 ○ MOVIES 185 (c) Bedford/St. Martin's bedfordstmartins.com 1-457-62096-0 / 978-1-457-62096-6 MOVIES A generation later, the space epic Star Wars (1977) changed the culture of the movie industry. ...Journal of Management and Marketing Research Product placement effectiveness: revisited and renewed Kaylene Williams California State University, Stanislaus Alfred Petrosky California State University, Stanislaus Edward Hernandez California State University, Stanislaus Robert Page, Jr. Southern Connecticut State University ABSTRACT Product placement is the purposeful incorporation of commercial content into noncommercial settings, that is, a product plug generated via the fusion of advertising and entertainment. While product placement is riskier than conventional advertising, it is becoming a common practice to place products and brands into mainstream media including films, broadcast and cable television programs, computer and video games, blogs, music videos/DVDs, magazines, books, comics, Broadway musicals and plays, radio, Internet, and mobile phones. To reach retreating audiences, advertisers use product placements increasingly in clever, effective ways that do not cost too much. The purpose of this paper is to examine product placement in terms of definition, use, purposes of product placement, specific media vehicles, variables that impact the effectiveness of product placement, the downside of using product placement, and the ethics of product placement. Keywords: Product placement, brand placement, branded entertainment, in-program sponsoring Product placement effectiveness, Page 1 Journal of Management and Marketing Research INTRODUCTION In its simplest form...

...CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1. Background to the Study Films, generally, serve as a tool for national integration and development. Major types of film are home video, which develop, until now, from what is formerly known as cinema or stage play/drama. As part of mass media, home videos play the important roles of informing, educating, entertaining and transmitting social heritage. Through their educational role, however, home videos concern themselves with evolving a better society by exposing societal ill and wrongs. Since the emergence of home videos, at the turn of the twenty-first century the films industries, and both male and female actors in Nigeria, Nollywood, have considerably influenced the habits, belief systems, style of dressing and other behavioural idiosyncrasies on many Nigerian youths. Thus, one can say, however, that the emergence of home videos have helped to promote the Nigerian cultural heritage; aside this, it has awaken in many youths the Nigerian culture that was once lost during the colonial period. There are also negative effects of home videos on audiences. However, there have been cases where home videos are criticized to the cause for some societal ills. Social critics, who believes in this school of thought says that some antisocial behaviours like violence and extravagant life that many films portrays in their content perceptibly affect the behavior of the audience. Nonetheless, all these sum up to mean that home videos have both positive...
