...ability to analyze a film. The two goals that stood out most were to learn to analyze and critically evaluate ideas, arguments, and points of view and to continue to develop skills in expressing oneself in writing. I benefited from these goals because I now have a deeper knowledge of different film genres and can correctly revise my essays. In order to display the progress made in my writing abilities throughout this semester I chose to revise and analyze Take Me Out to the Ball Game. This class introduced a new aspect of writing for me because I have never been required to analyze the scenes and themes of a film prior to taking this class. The film, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, is a musical comedy about a baseball team. My initial instinct was to classify this film as a simple sports film. However, after analyzing the film it was clear that there was more to it than just a sports perspective. The film had several other themes besides sports, two of which included patriotism and acceptance. It was very interesting to analyze the different relationships among the characters in this sport musical. Despite the different personalities of each character, I found it fascinating that they were so intertwined through their love for baseball and their country. Despite the decrease in the usage of the peer editing process this semester from last semester, it still played a crucial role in the final product of my essays. When choosing an essay topic on each film, no two students were...

...MOVIE CRITIC PAPER Action and Adventure Barbara Jones Hum/ 150 Film Studies September 24, 2012 Deborah Taylor When I decided to watch a movie for my critic paper I wanted a film that had a little bit of action, adventure and thriller. I came across the movie Contraband. The mise-en-scene of this film was based on Mark Wahlberg as Chris Farraday; he was a master drug smuggler who had tried to settled down in a normal life as a working dad and loving husband. But his wife in the movie Katie played by (Katie Beckinsale) had a teeage brother in the movie Andy played by (Caleb Jones). During the beginning part of the movie Andy was on a drug run trying to smuggle drugs in on a ship for a drug dealer name Tim played by (Giovanni Ribis) but during his drug run Andy was forced to drop a huge shipment of cocaine off the ship because customs was checking ship making sure it was drug free. And because of that Andy lands himself, Katie, Chris into a huge financial problem. Chris (Mark Wahlberg) tried to negotiate with Tim Briggs to pay him back the money that was lost cause of the cocaine drugs being dumped off the ship. However Tim only gives Chris and Andy 2 weeks to give him back the money that was lost due to him dumping the drugs off the ship. Chris now has to make the decision to get back into the game of smuggling drugs and trying to bring in counterfeit money to save his brother in law from being killed. Chris rounds up a few friends to go with him to Panama to help him...

...Writing A Thesis Statement | After finding a topic, but before writing the paper, you must write a thesis statement. An effective thesis statement helps you focus and establish a paper’s purpose. A thesis statement also helps readers, guiding them through the paper. An effective thesis statement tells them what you learned about your topic, describes what evidence led to your conclusion, and helps readers understand your argument. Basically, the thesis statement communicates the central point of a paper and answers the following question: What do you want to prove? The following checklist may help you write an effective thesis statement: * Write an opinion a person could agree with or argue against. * Limit the scope of your thesis statement so it is not broad. Check, however, that you have enough information to support the thesis. * Assert your opinion about the subject clearly and concisely. * Write the thesis as a statement instead of a question. * Use third-person point of view, instead of first-person: he, she, it, and they instead of I and me. * Limit your thesis statement to a complete sentence of, at most, 25 words. A thesis statement is not a fact, generalization, exaggeration, or announcement of the essay’s topic. Examples of Ineffective and Effective Thesis Statements Thesis Statements | Effective or Ineffective | Rationale | The federal government must solve the housing crisis. | Ineffective | Too broad, vague, or general | The...

...Film Viewer Opinion Cheryl A. Williams HUM150-Introduction to Film Studies January 7, 2013 Brian Krieger Film Viewer Opinion This summary will address how I determine which films to watch, what makes a film enjoyable, and what makes a film unenjoyable to watch. The opinions expressed in this summary are solely those of the author and not of University of Phoenix, its staff, or facilitators. Deciding which films to watch is not challenging for this writer. Romance, erotica, action, drama, adventure, mystery, musicals, documentaries, and animated or cartoon are preferred. The aforementioned types of films or movies are preferred because they usually contain an element of humor or provide some type of comedic relief. Enjoyable Characteristics For a film to be enjoyable for this writer, the film(s) should contain a variety of elements to make one laugh, cry, or both; keeps one on the edge of his or her seat, and keeps one’s eyes glued to the screen in anticipation of what is to happen next. Enjoyable films keep one intrigued, attentive, and wanting to see more. Whether a sequel or just watching the film time and time again and never experiencing boredom, even after the 175th time watching it, one is still excited by what the film offers. Movies or documentaries that teach a lesson, one can learn from the contents of the film, or something of significance can be taken away from it are things that make a film or movie enjoyable for this writer. Technical elements that...

First, even though the benefits of technologies are argumentative, I was amused that some of the authors proclaimed that technologies should not be used. People like me have abundant products which are made by technology around them. Ironically, the majority of authors in the book They Say I Say did not totally agree with using technologies. Sherry Turkle argues about technologies deprive the time parent spend on her; Nicholas Carr once believed that computer would replace reading. However, after understanding their points of view critically, I can speak of their views with my own words following with my personal opinions, such as why would Clive Thompson and Nicholas Carr say technologies will shape the way we think. Eventually, I decided to write...

...Angelia Renee Cady Com/156 May 15, 2011 Jennifer Iott Revision Practice After reading the draft of The Dark Knight, if there are any revisions to be made to improve this paper, keeping in mind the concept behind essay revision. Revising is looking for ways to make the ideas that this essay is built from clearer, stronger, and more convincing. When revising, always keep in mind that he/she may have to add, cut, move, or change whole sentences or paragraphs. When writing something like, “The Dark Knight was the most popular film of 2008,” there needs to be some kind of fact that backs this statement up. The awards that the film was nominated for or won can be mentioned to help give this comment some weight behind it would be appropriate. If it were me writing this essay on the Black Knight, I would want the world to know how good the story line is. Rearranging the order of the paragraphs would be appropriate, it is my opinion that the writer jumped ahead of himself/herself. I find that the information is a little scattered. Paragraph #2 and #3 needs to change places. The information in paragraph three is a continuation of the first paragraph. It gives the audience a look into why they will always view The Dark Knight as an outstanding movie. All the information concerning Batman Begins should follow after the second paragraph. This means, the original second paragraph is the third paragraph. This will make it easier...

...A Walk in the Clouds Film ENG 225 Instructor Matthew Norsworthy January 17, 2014 A Walk in The Clouds film The average moviegoer is looking for the very basic qualities in their quest for discovering what they would consider a terrific movie. The basic criteria consist of neutral elements such as; which actors have been cast in the film? What kind of genre is the film targeting? Is the plot and theme interesting? Is the film visually appealing? All of these questions set a reviewers initial impressions of the film they are about to see, however every film is much deeper than those basic elements and require a very different approach when determining the true art structure that a film partakes. Naturally most people are attracted to one particular genre of movie or another, whether it is westerns, love stories, horror films, mysteries, or any number of other types of film that can be created by the talented and diligent minds of all sorts of writers. No one can say with 100% certainty that one type of film surpasses the quality of another. Any two people can see the same movie and possess opposing views of the depth and originality the film portrayed prompting very different opinions about the same film. Some of the best films prompt the viewer to ask questions that may or may not be answered directly or indirectly throughout the film. In the film, “A Walk in the Clouds” starring Keano Reeves who plays Paul Sutton, a Sargent...

...Abby Simon CMCL-C 392 Paper 1 When deciding which genre I was going to choose I went over some debate in my head. I of course wanted to write about something that interested me, but also something that was shocking for me to watch never really knowing the history. I decided to analyze the films They Call It Pro Football and The Two Escobars. Having never seen either of these films before and being a huge sports fan I was very intrigued. Each come from different times, but have many similar and different aspects that I found. They Call It Pro Football came out in 1966 and was made by a company called NFL Films. To this day they are still creating incredible pieces of sports work. In my opinion the overall goal of this film is to show the tensions, community, and reality of football. This film to me took us into the field very well by giving us great audio of the players and coaches as well as certain fans in the audience. By giving us a first-hand look at how coaches interact with referees and how the players interact with each other we get to see how much tension builds up, but how exciting it is for the viewers. We also get to see some behind the scenes looks into the announcing booths and how even if you aren’t sitting with the general population in the stands, the same feeling of happiness comes over you if your team does well. The argument that I feel is trying to be made is how great football is in general. The descriptions of the atmosphere and the players themselves...

...Analyzing Films Daniel Miller Professor Schmidt ENG 225 March 25, 2010 Analyzing Films Generally, when a person wants to watch a movie, it is solely for the purpose of entertainment. As the audience member, we often do not spend a great deal of time analyzing the plot, dialogue, and setting. But by taking the time to carefully analyze a movie, you can get a better appreciation of the story that the filmmakers are trying to tell. The films themselves often have a number of elements that come together in order to guide the audience through the arc of the story. Film has properties that set it apart from painting, sculpture, novels, and plays and it is a storytelling medium that shares various elements with short stories and novels (Boggs and Petrie, 2008). While the actors themselves may be the most visible elements on the screen, a number of other craftsmen had to perform many other functions in order to get that finished film in front of an audience. If you are interested in analyzing why one movie succeeds and another fails, it is necessary to understand how much of a collaborative effort filmmaking truly is. Here are some elements that should be considered when preparing to analyze a film (Pollick, 2007). To Analyze a Film Completely First, consider the effectiveness of the dialogue and storyline. Professional screenwriters are the true architects of a movie, though many of them do not get the same attention as the actors or directors of a film. Screenwriters may...

"'Fathers' Rights' Sought: Men Ask Courts to Give Them a Voice in Abortion Decisions." ABA Journal. 74.7 (1988). Print. This fairly short article composed by Debra Cassens Moss is a telltale sign that there are men in this world who really care to have their voice considered when it comes to keeping the baby or getting an abortion. It gives the situations of three different men in three different cases but with the very same result. These men came to the courts to ask for a vetoing power in abor-tion decisions but make little to no progress. It is...

...This paper provides a film analysis using the three theoretical perspectives; Symbolic Interactionist, Functionalist and Conflict Theorist. Additionally, this exploration is organized by each theoretical view. Furthermore, this review includes the opinion of this writer’s strongest theoretical perspective, as well as considering additional questions relating to the correlation of micro and macro sociology within the film. Thus, the film chosen for this analysis is “Mean Girls”, the 2004 comedy with a moral plot which is written by Tina Fey and directed by Mark Waters. Indeed, this film relates to the sociological area of gender and by watching this film through different lenses, this writer ascertains the intricacies of each role and function...

...AJ Woytko Reaction Paper #1 2/27/15 Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing” In director and actor Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing,” presents his views on race relations in the 80s in the US. This film portrays the discrimination of African Americans in the United States and shows the many racial altercations that took place during this time period and even still to this day. The concept of the movie I liked; however, I did not like how it was executed. I thought that the acting was fairly poor but I did like how he would center in on one person and get their takes on things throughout the movie. One big thing that stood out to me that I thought was rather ironic was the intense fight scene towards the end of the movie. I thought that was pretty ironic due to the fact that another African American man was choked to death by a white cop in New York City just a few months ago. After watching a few of the Hitchcock movies thus far, I can see huge difference in the making of movies through different time periods. In my opinion, I thought that each of the Hitchcock films were far better directed and acted than that of Spike Lee’s Do The Right Think. I felt that Alfred Hitchcock brought the films more to life and made the scenes stand out than what Spike Lee has. I mean I liked where he was going with the film by digging into a touchy subject like racial altercations in the way that he did during that time period but I just was not a fan of the movie. I was almost falling asleep...

...Hancock’s film captured many aspects of the real Alamo. The film portrayed many actual events of the battle, so I would say that the movie is mostly historically accurate. The film began with a scene showing all of the Alamo’s defenders lying dead on the ground. Every man did, in fact, die defending the Alamo. Nobody knows for certain how many Texans were killed at the battle of the Alamo, but the movie showed an accurate estimate of the amount of men that historians and researchers believe were present at the Alamo. Next, a scene played showing William Travis with his wife signing divorce papers. It is true that Rosanna Travis broke off the marriage with William. In the movie, Rosanna brought William’s son, Charles, and a little girl with...
