Strategic Initiative Paper Learning Team has discussed and referenced the strategic and financial planning of Wal-Mart Inc. Wal-Mart has proven to be very successful through its many years of service. Wal-Mart has continued to increase in sales since the first store was opened in 1962. The reasoning behind Sam Walton’s, founder of Wal-Mart, success has been his strategic and financial planning through the years. According to Wal-Mart’s 2011 Annual Report, the company’s vision is to save their customers money so their customers can live a healthier life, (Wal-Mart, 2011.) This is Wal-Mart’s strategic plan set for their employees to achieve. Extensive research has to be done on an every day basis to discover what products can achieve this strategic plan. Within Wal-Mart’s vision are two set initiatives; low prices and healthier products. One way Wal-Mart can achieve this is their Global Business Processes team. This team handles the implementing and developing efficiencies within the company. Some ways this can be done is by improving work productivity, understanding the consumer’s needs and wants and also finding the best suited individuals for the company. The Global Business Processes team helps streamline the financial costs to benefit the company’s needs and requirements. An example of an initiative the Global Business Processes Team leads is the cost leadership. The cost leadership approach allows the company to sell to their consumers at a lower cost than their competitors, the benefit of leveraging operating expenses and improve productivity at a lower rate than sales growth. The risks associated with this initiative are changed currency exchange rate, interest rate,

...DQ1 How would you define working capital? I would define working capital as short term decisions relating to the next one year period which can be reversible. Working capital can ensure that the firm can continue its operations, and to see if there is sufficient money flow to satisfy both maturing short term debt and upcoming operational expenses. What could happen if an organization neglected to manage its working capital? If an organization neglected to manage its working capital. The organization could make decisions that could cost them if the working capital is not managed right. The organization could be in real trouble. Strategic planning is just one of the different steps to be performed in achieving a solid plan. As Disney encounters different issues such as the current state of the economy or positive opportunities, planners must come to careful and smart conclusions. Planners for Disney should always include the current financial state of the company, during the planning process. There are a few key steps pertaining to the financial aspect of strategic planning: developing financial goals, alternative courses of action, evaluating risk, implementing a financial action plan, and reevaluating your plan. During the planning process, at some point, senior planners will need to identify or update the strategic philosophy. This process can be accomplished by updating the mission, the vision, and the core values statement to be aligned with the strategic plan.   “Some deft observer of the laws of physics as well as economics once said that the two most powerful forces in the world are gravity and the time value of money, (http://www.finance.cch.com/text/c10s10d020.asp).” Time Value of Money is a beginning block for financial planning, and Disney must have a genuine understanding...

We focus on free cash flows rather than accounting profits because these are the flows that the firm receives and can reinvest. Only by examining cash flows are we able to correctly analyze the timing of the benefit or cost. Also, we are only interested in these cash flows on an after tax basis as only those flows are available to the shareholder. In addition, it is only the incremental cash flows that interest us, because, looking at the project from the point of the company as a whole, the incremental cash flows are the marginal benefits from the project and, as such, are the increased value to the firm from accepting the project. 2. Although depreciation is not a cash flow item, it does affect the level of the differential cash flows over the project’s life because of its effect on taxes. Depreciation is an expense item and, the more depreciation incurred, the larger are expenses. Thus, accounting profits become lower and in turn, so do taxes which are a cash flow item. 3. ...
