RFP Application 7. Please provide a brief summary of your proposal for grant funding.

Habitat for Humanity will use the grant monies for expanding our training/workshop and simulation room and replacing the old and outdating office equipment and furniture. We would purchase a new All-in-one printer, copier, scanner and fax machine that is needed for marketing and training. We will also purchase tables, chairs, dry eraser boards, a projector and ten (10) new computers, which will all be using during training classes. The training and workshops are for our volunteers and selected Lake County families. We will conduct classes on home repair, budgeting, banking, credit, savings, home maintenance, community involvement, energy efficiency, homeownership, and children’s success in school program for low-income homeowners in Lake County. The volunteers will also be trained on basic wiring, plumbing, masonry work and drying walling by professionals. Habitat for Humanity has utilized the non-profit’s existing construction and support services staff to grow the program, by adding an efficient process for home repair to the ongoing mission of building new affordable, energy-efficient homes for low and moderate income families.

The monies from the grant will service all low income families of Lake County Indiana. We will service all genders, races, adult ages, economic backgrounds and the disabled that meets are minimum income requirements, possess the ability to pay down payment and closing cost, have a consistent payment history and not have excessive debt. The family’s income must be between 30% and 80% of the median income for Lake County. The acceptor of this grant must also have a need for an affordable and safe housing. The grant acceptor must be 21 years of age or older. The family must be willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity, perform sweat-equity hours, attend workshops and classes and pay a down payment and closing costs of the home. 9. Lake County, Indiana is has numerous economically depressed communities with many people out of work. Approximately fifty years ago, Gary and its surrounding towns and cities once thrived on the few Steel Mills, that will still have today and factories that are no longer in existence or has moved to other states or even out of the country entirely. The downsizing and relocation of huge companies have pushed a large number of families to drastically lower incomes or close to not having an income at all. Gary was once a flourishing little town but with many industries moving out there is now a large sector of the population who need help. Gary, Lake Station, Hammond, East Chicago are just a few of the cities that have a huge population of teen mothers living in poverty and despair. The workshop/training facility can help this population by informing people of the numerous of ways in which they can improve their lives and provide a better living for themselves and their families by providing services. The workshop/training facility will expand their family services by have extra tables, chairs, dry eraser boards, a larger projector and ten (10) additional new computers. The workshop/training facility and its partners will also offer eight programs over the grant two year dealing with such topics as: home repair, budgeting, banking, credit, savings, home maintenance, community involvement, energy efficiency, homeownership, children’s success in school program and much more for low-income homeowners in Lake County.

Yes, my project is sustainable. We have very supportive board members who physical and financially support our movement. We receive support from numerous communities that donate their old furniture, home fixtures (such as doors, sinks, faucets, etc) and sweat equity. After We have improved the community and established a since of pride within the families, we will plan annual traditional fund-raising efforts, such as, selling T-shirts with positive messages, conducting volley ball, kick ball and soft ball games, golf tournaments, silent auctions and/or other activities that create goodwill and raises money. To cut down on salary expenses we invite outside specialist from the banking, home improvement, and other to instruct entities that can offer their professional advice.

Habitat for Humanity is evaluated by the positive improvement of the community and the creation of first time homeowners. We do not just simply build houses, we build communities. By building communities, we provide the opportunity for partner families and their children to have a safe, stable environment where they can flourish to their full potential. If a family who was once unable to keep a credit score of 650 or better, but now has a credit score of such and higher, with minimal debt and has maintained their home and its upkeep within a two year period, then the chances of them losing their home has improved.
