...Running head: FINAL PAPER 1 Final Paper Jamie Erwin ETH/125 July 4, 2014 Helene Hutchins FINAL PAPER 2 What information about diversity in the United States has helped you better understand or relate to others in ways that you may not have in the past? From all the information that I have learned about diversity in the United States I believe it has helped me better to understand and to relate to other people better then I have in past. The information has also cause me to be more open minded. I know that diversity is all around us and will always be, but if it wasn't for diversity we would all be the same. When we deal with diversity we can learn new ways to better ourselves. When I was younger I wanted everything to be easy. As I have aged I have started to look for ways to challenge myself to try and think better, and that is when I was able to recognize diversity and how it plays a large part in our lives. Yes, I have learned that over the centuries my cultural has been involved in some really terrible things. Have you learned something new about your own racial, ethnic, or cultural history? During one of the assignment I had the opportunity to not only research and find out about my own heritage, but I learned about some of the history of my ancestors. I knew what my heritage was prior to this I was unaware of all the different...

...Religion and Ethnic Diversity Paper Tammy L. Morgan Eth/125 3/17/2013 Dr. Sisay Teketele Religion and Ethnic Diversity Paper Buddhism is a religion that has fascinated me for many years. I do not claim to be affiliated with any specific organized religion, but I do however, enjoy educating myself about the many different religions that we as humans have become so reliant on. I mean absolutely no disrespect, nor do I mean to trivialize the teachings of any religion, but I will say that Buddhism is one that I can relate to more so than most. Buddhism is a religion f oneness and compassion. Buddhist teachings consist of messages that encourages its followers to “Cease all unwholesome conduct, do only what is good, and purify your mind.” (Shr Heng Lyu, 2012). It is a religion who’s foundation is based on four basic truths, they are: that life is full of suffering, that there is a cause of this suffering, it is possible to stop suffering, and there is a way to extinguish suffering (Aich, 2013). With this being said, you would think that Buddhism would be above prejudice, discrimination, and persecution, sadly this is not the case. There are several types of Buddhism, but for the sake of this assignment I will restrict myself to speaking of Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism. Most sects of Buddhism is also closely intertwined with Asian cultures, but that is something that I will discuss a little later. Buddhism differs from other religions in many ways, but the one that sticks...

...Running head: FINAL PROJECT Final Project ETH/125 January 12, 2014 Abstract Many websites are available on the Internet with information on the various diversity groups in America. The U.S. population’s diversity is influenced by immigration. There are both benefits and challenges to having such a diverse population. Fostering a culture of acceptance in society is key to reaping more benefits and reducing challenges. Mass media has an influential impact in society, perpetuating stereotypes or building appreciation for diversity. If individuals and the U.S can come together, they can reduce prejudice and increase acceptance and tolerance. Final Paper The plethora of information about diversity in the United States can give someone a better understanding than they may have previously had. Through understanding, a person may be able to better relate to someone that is different. Many websites are available on the Internet with information on the various diversity groups in America. The key to reaping more benefits, while reducing the challenges, is to foster a culture of acceptance in society. The media plays a large influential role in society and can work to perpetuate stereotypes and prejudice or build...

...Don Timmons Final paper ETH/125 March 14, 2013 During this course I have learned about diversity, race, ethnicity, cultural differences, stereotyping and prejudice. Much of the textbook reading has enlightened me on the immense diversity in the United States and in the world at large. The decisions that I partook in during this course have allowed me to interact with many diverse people from various backgrounds which is much like the way the United States and society is in general work. I really never thought about diversity in the way that was taught in this course; people come from many backgrounds and have rich and full cultures who live right here in my own community. Now that I see these cultures in a different light due to this course I can enjoy them more and not feel like they are so different from me and when they are different I can embrace those differences. Growing up in an urban area I was part of a very diverse neighborhood. The south side of town where I grew up was mixed with many races. There were African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Caucasians, and many mixed races. As children I don’t think we paid too much attention to the racial tension that went on around us. I had friends of different races and for the most part we all got along. I remember times were some of the kids in the neighborhood would get into fights and you could see the racial divide that would unfold if those fighting were of different races. You would see kids taking...

...Final Project Kathleen Culbreth ETH/125 August 11, 2013 Kathryn Grant * * When you are able to see how other cultures live and interact, you learn that everyone is different. This knowledge has helped me to realize that the differences between cultures can be a significant factor in our lives. What I have learned in this course has helped me learn how diversity can promote more tolerance which in turn helps us to accept other cultures and their specific way of life. The point I am trying to make is that everyone is different because of the culture that they were raised in and that the differences can be helpful in strengthening the society in which we all live. It allows us to learn a new way of life which helps us grow closer to becoming a united society. If we accept and embrace the differences, we can no longer be blind to the reality of life and what is going on around us. I believe that if we use what we learn, it can increase a deeper tolerance which in turn should help decrease racism, prejudice and discrimination. The most important thing we need to do is to stop grouping people. When we place people into a certain group, this causes us to be divided. As long as we remain a nation divided, we will continue to see attacks by one group on another group instead of the solidarity that a united nation can bring. * * Although my race is Caucasian, my ethnicity is Irish/German/Polish. I could not find any information as to my ethnicity so I suppose...

...Exchange 37 (2008) 124-155 www.brill.nl/exch Ethiopian Traditional Values versus the Social Teaching of the Church Solomon Dejene Research Student, Nijmegen Institute for Mission Studies, Nijmegen, The Netherlands Email: S.Dejene@nim.ru.nl Abstract Even if the Roman Catholic Church does not have a very long history in Ethiopia and constitutes a small minority of the society, her social significance is great in part due to the structural development programs she runs through out the country. The main aim of this paper is to identify how much the Church1 has made use of traditional systems and values in reflecting and communicating pastorally particularly in regard the Social of the Church (henceforth CST). By analyzing four selected pastoral letters, this article tries to spell out the strengths and shortcomings of the Church in employing traditional systems and values in giving form to the CST. Keywords Catholic social teaching, human dignity, common good, solidarity, reconciliation and peace, contextualization, Ethiopian traditional values Introduction Most of the current national boundaries of Africa were drawn during the colonial period and do not reflect the socio-cultural, ethno-linguistic and religious compositions of the colonies. Although Ethiopia has successfully overcome European colonial power and survived as an independent state with the exception of a five year Italian occupation (1936-41), its contemporary national boarder is a result of the scramble for Africa....
