...MKT 500: Project Description and Scoring Guide Overview The final project for this course is the creation of a marketing plan for a product of service. You will propose a “fictional” consumer product or service you wish to bring to market. This final project is designed to walk you through such a task. The components of this project will be submitted in six separate milestones spread throughout the modules of the course. These milestones are the initial product idea (Module One), Part One (Module Two), Part Two (Module Four), Part Three (Module Seven), Part Four (Module Eight) and the full marketing plan (Module Nine). Main Elements of Final Product Marketing Plan Elements (Ten Sections) I. Product or Service Description Describe for the reader what it is that you wish to bring to market. If it is a product, describe the product, its functionality, and how it works. If it is a service, describe the service offering so that the reader understands what they would receive. Your description should be complete, including: • Where your company is located • The problem your product/service solves – as seen by the target market (not you) – and to which the target market would say, “Yes, that is a problem and no one has solved it”? • The competitive...

In response to the increasing dropout rate of high school students in the local community and a worsening financial situation at the local school district, the organization is considering the opportunity to offer basic skills and vocational training programs in the community. The purpose of this new program is to equip high school dropouts with necessary skills needed to gain potential employment opportunities. As an executive director, justify the reasoning behind this new program and develop a complete launch plan, including a budget and consideration of environmental factors. You must determine how data will be used to support the new program and consider human resources issues affecting this new program. The organization has these issues to consider: • The local economy situation is depressed due to steady job losses resulting from employers relocating to other cities and communities that offer better economic incentives to employers. As a result, local property taxes that support funding of high school programs have declined singifantly in recent years. The reduction has caused the local school district to lose significant financial resources...

...Team Insight Paper One of the basic requirements of PM587 is participation in a team project. Team participants for this group were three. The project required guidelines related to the Strategic Business Unit (SBU) processes and how decisions are reached on selecting projects which are most closely aligned with the goals and values of the company. The project also required an analysis, a selection criteria and procedural techniques for applying portfolio management theory and methods. Our project team was formed on the second week of the session and at this time we were faced with two challenges: 1) Our project began one week later than the provided schedule. Groups should have been formed in week one, but instead, teams were not assigned until week two. Even with being a week behind, the implementation date of the project was week 7, and remained unchanged. 2) The main resource that we lacked was time. The class was required to prepare and take quizzes during weeks three and five. With the Thanksgiving Holiday falling on the schedule during week five, this posed another challenge in which natural conflict developed with regards to the usual holiday travel and vacation schedules. Based on these challenges, the team immediately started discussing the requirements of the team project instead of working on team construction. All team members agreed that our group was a non-team- leader group. The reasons are: 1) We were a small, three-person group and really...

...hil61217_ch08_case.qxd 5/12/04 17:12 Page 15 ADDITIONAL CASES I CASE 8.2 CONTINUATION OF THE TEXAGO CASE STUDY Reconsider the case study presented in the supplement to Chap. 8 (on the CD-ROM) involving the Texago Corp. site selection problem. Texago management has tentatively chosen St. Louis as the site of the new refinery. However, management now is addressing the question of whether the capacity of the new refinery should be made somewhat larger than originally planned. While analyzing the site selection problem, the task force had been told to assume that the new refinery would have the capacity to process 120 million barrels of crude oil per year. As indicated in Table 3, this then would increase the total capacity of all the corporation’s refineries from 240 million barrels to 360 million barrels. According to marketing forecasts, Texago would be able to sell all its finished product once this new capacity becomes available, but no more. Therefore, the choice of 120 million barrels as the capacity of the new refinery would enable all the corporation’s refineries to operate at full capacity while also fully meeting the forecasted demand for Texago’s products. However, to prepare for possible future increases in demand beyond the current forecasts, management now wants to also consider the option of enlarging the plans for the new refinery so that it would have the capacity to process 150 million barrels of crude oil annually. Although...

...In order to remain competitive and stay profitable, SAI controlled expenses. Current trends indicate the industry may be on the rise again. SAI wants to develop some new capital investment projects that are in line with their goals: increase their market share, and keep pace with new technology (University of Phoenix, 2007). Future Scenarios The first task in the simulation was to examine probable future scenarios that could potentially affect SAI cash flow with two projects, Dig-image and W-Comm. Part of SAI’s plans is their desire to earn $54 million in their first year by selling 400,000 units, however they first need to determine their working capital. “Working capital rises over the early years of the project as expansion occurs. However, all working capital is assumed to be recovered at the end, a common assumption in capital budgeting” (Ross, Westerfield, & Jaffey, 2005, p. 183). SAI is expecting growth will be 20% in the first three years and then decrease 10% annually in years 4 and 5. SAI is expecting increasing competition, decreasing prices, and a short lifespan of the technology that could be obsolete before the lifespan of the project itself. Although increasing the volume of units will increase the NVP and IRR, this is not a feasible solution, nor is it a sustainable one. Instead SAI should consider a modest, yearly increase and encourage a high percentage of sales as the most viable option. Throughout this process, the CFO made extensive use of IRR and NVP...

...Our group for the Team Project consisted of Ron, Kirt Roosa, and Elton Loci. The team was tasked with designing a Portfolio Management process by which our Strategic Business Unit (SBU) would make decisions on what projects would fit into its current portfolio, as well as adopt processes to track and adjust the portfolio based on the overall strategy of the company. The decision that was made during the first meeting was to develop a portfolio plan for General Motors. Having the project split into separate sections for submission helped to prioritize our work, especially in early phases of the project. On the other hand, this project schedule also caused some problems in the end since the team mainly focused on the next section due rather than subsequent parts of the project, which often came back to give us problems later. This could have been prevented by reallocating the load on resources more evenly throughout the duration of the project instead of adjusting the amount and style of work from week to week. From the very beginning of the project, the group jumped right into the discussion of the project, rather than determine team mechanics or organizational structure. For instance, we opted not to assign a team leader to the group because: 1) we felt that there was not really a need for one, and 2) we felt comfortable playing off each other teammate's strengths in order to divide and complete the project tasks. Communication, as in any project, was a very important aspect...
