Technical case

Case OleanTek: scheduling, resourcing and costs for a new service business launch project
OleanTek is a medium-sized technology-based firm with its core business in equipment and system deliveries for large engineering industry clients. Its three strategic customers have increasingly requested maintenance services after the actual equipment and system deliveries, and these services have so far been carried out by the side of other duties by the technical staff. OleanTek’s leaders have noticed that maintenance could be implemented also in the form of more strategic service business that could complement the company’s offering and generate important benefits to other customers, too. OleanTek has decided to invest in a new service business launch project to plan and test four basic service concepts concurrently: corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance, spare parts service, and modernization. The project starts with delimiting the service offering and ends with planning the broader service launch process; the actual marketing and broader launch of new services are excluded from the project. Paul Lander, the maintenance manager, has been selected as project manager for the project. He is well acquainted with OleanTek and its clientele already. Paul has noticed that it is very difficult to plan the project with detail as most of the tasks include a lot of uncertainty due to their ambiguous content and novelty and the chosen mode of operating. The project is intended to employ cross-functional cooperation that involves expertise from maintenance, marketing, and technical planning. The required persons can spend a maximum of 30% of their time to the tasks in this project by the side of their other duties, which causes a resource bottleneck, already taken into account in estimated task durations. Introduction Market trends: Defaults, deleveraging, diversification and DBFM The number of deals decreased in 2011 compared with 2010. Uncertainty in the market was a major factor for this decline. Although uncertainty remains omnipresent in 2012, M&A activity is expected to increase, even though the average deal size will be smaller compared with previous years. Small and medium-sized companies are the main targets, provided they are of interest to the limited number of larger construction companies active in the European M&A market. Survival techniques – including deleveraging, diversification and reorganisations – have been and will continue to be applied to avoid defaulting on financial obligations. Companies that do not attract the attention of potential acquirers must be skilled in these techniques if they are to outlive financial turmoil and avoid financial distress...

Research on Challenges Facing Sport in the Country Still Doing Litereature Review.

...UNESCO's 1978 International Charter of Physical Education and Sport classified sport as "a fundamental right for all." But the low place sport occupies in the developing world's priorities shows that its importance as an educational and social tool is not yet universal. Everyone agrees that sport contributes to economic development by creating jobs and stimulating business activity. The organization of a major sporting event, for example, is a great opportunity for the local economy. The thousands of people who attend will spend money on food, lodging, transportation and other, related tourist activities. However, in recent years, we see these economic benefits are obvious only the short term. If we take the example of South Africa in 2010, the positive impact of the World Cup was, in terms of job creation and reduced crime, only temporary and fell far short of pre-tournament projections. For example, the 309,000 tourists who came to the World Cup spent about $400 million, based on studies of the tourism department. The estimates prior to the tournament were three times higher. While the World Cup saw FIFA profit more than $2 billion, it cost South Africa $4.3 billion -- including nearly a billion dollars to...

In the 2010 FDI Confidence Index®, we examine the future prospects for international investment flows in the context of these tumultuous times. While conditions have improved, senior executives at the world’s largest companies remain wary of investing during the current climate, and few expect a full turnaround before 2011. Amid the economic downturn of the past two years, several emerging markets remain attractive to foreign investors. China, India and Brazil are in...
