...Stephanie Minshew SOC-1101-51 SPR – 2014 Final Exam: Joel Best - Damned Lies In the book, Damned Lies and Statistics by Joel Best, Best provides information for people to be able to critically think about social statistics. He pinpoints some common complications with social statistics and provides examples to define his points. By providing examples, it makes understanding the problem easier than by just general statements. He gives the reader tools they can use in every day instances regarding statistics. Making sure that the reader knows how to ask basic questions about statistics they hear. This helps us to understand how sometimes numbers can become mangled within communication. That one cannot compare apples to oranges, that comparison must be fair. That we must be analytical, and critical of numbers, but to also not become naïve or cynical. I absolutely loved his explanation for the way society is often innumerate. He provided a perfect example of how many people don’t process the concept of large numbers. As his example he used a small child and a penny. To a child a penny is a lot of money, but to an older child a penny is not a lot of money. In the same aspect, if you ask an older child if one hundred dollars is a lot of money they would most likely agree that a hundred bucks is a lot of money, but to an adult it’s most likely not a lot of money. That to most people big numbers blend together. There are huge implications to being innumerate. Because some...

...in Vietnam and the policies and feelings surrounding the war. | Book Report | Works Cited Karnow, Stanley. Vietnam: A History. New York: Penguin, 1997. Print. The Vietnam War was not just of interest to the government but the world took great interest as a whole. It was like trying to figure out a magician’s illusion. Before reading this book I only had vague general knowledge of the Vietnam War and how the conflict transpired. I knew about the communist insurgents, the Gulf of Tonkin, Saigon and Ho Chi Mihn. I knew about Presidents Johnson and Nixon, posttraumatic stress disorder and demonstrations. What I did not fully understand was why. Why were the North Vietnamese so resilient? Why did the US make such poor judgment? Why were we really there? What was Vietnam's history prior to our arrival? “History is an organic process, a continuity of related events, inexorable yet not inevitable.” (pg 11) The roots of America's involvement in Vietnam were nurtured by what Professor Daniel Bell has called America's concept of its own “exceptionalism.” George Berkeley, an Anglican bishop and philosopher stated in 1726 as he departed from England to America, “Westward the course of empire.” The phrase, “manifest destiny”, was coined in 1845 to promote the annexation of Texas, originally, and to extend America to its natural boundaries. Promoters of the Homestead Act sought...

...9/11 I chose the events of 9/11 for my research paper because there has not been any other even in U.S. history that has changed America as much as the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Not even when Japan attack Pearl Harbor had such an attack on the U.S. changed the way we live or the way we see things. Yes the attack on Pearl Harbor sent the U.S. to war but the 9/11 attacks have not only changed our thinking but also implemented a new system to alert Americans when there could be another attack on U.S. soil. There has been so much talk on the events of 9/11 from it being another country to it being the work of the government to hide information to wanting to start a war. Which it did, American forces invaded Afghanistan to search for Osama Bin Laden. The thought that someone could hijack commercial airliners (Boeing 767s) and use them to attack high rises, not only high rises but U.S. landmarks and also the Pentagon which houses the military headquarters in the United States. There were four airliners hijacked that day with three of them hitting their marks and the fourth one crashing in a Pennsylvania field. The attacks are the worst terrorist attacks to ever happen on U.S. soil, resulting in more than 3,000 people were killed due to the attacks on New York and Washington D.C. After the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center on the 80th floor, it trapped hundreds of people above the fiery inferno and they started evacuating the north tower. Within...

...In the book Black Lives Matter to Black Liberation Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor contends that, indeed, America can be racist notwithstanding Black pioneers, and in reality such shallow increases for Blacks cover expansive auxiliary segregation in housing, instruction/education, business/employment, and policing. In the more powerful sections in her book, Taylor criticizes President Obama and civil rights leader Al Sharpton. Taylor quotes, “Since Obama came into office, Black median income has fallen by 10.9 percent to $33,500, compared to a 3.6 percent drop for whites, leaving their median income at $58,000.” Her original belief was that obama being in office could help contend, battle, and champion for enactment and the requirement of existing laws and rights in light of a legitimate concern for racial...

...Neil Postman, in his book Amusing Ourselves to Death, presents a thesis, that “all public discourse increasingly takes the form of entertainment”(Postman, 3) and that it causes us to be “slowly amusing ourselves to death” (Postman, 4). Postman is saying that over the course of history, all communication, or circulation of information has evolved from basic forms of expression with little additive, to overbearing, bombarding visual entertainment, nearly devoid of any meaningful information. He states that this eventually will lead to a state where the population is too amused by distractions that they don’t realize how powerless they have been made. Postman connects his thesis to media and culture. Postman presents the idea of “The Medium is the Metaphor” (Postman, 3), or “media-metaphor,” basically stating that every medium, whether it be oral speech, newspaper, or television, is a metaphor in the culture, and that...

...| The Triangle Fire | | | ALEX I. EDWARDS | FIT | This paper speaks of the tragedy that took place in 1911, which in turn became a major clash between management and labor. However, end the end brought about new regulations and reforms that are still be used today. | If it weren't for the tragedy that took places many years ago, the lives sacrificed unknowing by the individuals who lost their lives in this tragedy, we today could be still working in hazardous, unfavorable conditions, long torturous hours, and next to nothing pay. The industrial period brought on many changes because of the united from of the NWTUL and NLA. The Labor Relations Process book discusses the Unions that developed and grew in this time period. There is a reason why we are required to have adequate fire escape routes. Fire alarms, fire safety plans in place, fire extinguishers available and ready to use. Annual or quarterly checks regarding compliance with regulations of public safety (1962). The fire at the Triangle Waist Company in New York City, which claimed the lives of 146 young immigrant workers, is one of the worst, traumatic, disasters since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The incident had great significance to this day because it highlights the inhumane working conditions to which industrial workers were subjected too. To many, its ugliness epitomize the boundaries of industrialism. The catastrophe still remains in the shared memory of the nation and...

...is the best way to get our point across and the best way to solve problems. It is a situation that affects so many people. Not just those involved in the actual fighting in the war, but their families, their friends, and each country included in the war. When we send soldiers in to fight a battle, a lot of them will not make it back home to see their loved ones again. They may not even understand or agree with the reason behind the war. They just know they were called to serve their country and that’s what they will do. Based on the history of the United States of America, we have been at war for about 90% of the time since 1776. Some of the wars that have been instrumental within our history and that I will be discussing are World War 1, Battle of the Bull Run and Crusade. The process of warfare throughout the ages of time has evolved substantially; and these changes that have been implemented have drastically changed the way that we as a society view war and all that it entails. Let me say that since I have been a part of two wars I can say there are changes that have and will effect...

...Leuz I n its pure form, fair-value accounting involves reporting assets and liabilities on the balance sheet at fair value and recognizing changes in fair value as gains and losses in the income statement. When market prices are used to determine fair value, fair-value accounting is also called mark-to-market accounting. Some critics argue that fair-value accounting exacerbated the severity of the 2008 financial crisis. The main allegations are that fair-value accounting contributes to excessive leverage in boom periods and leads to excessive write-downs in busts. The write-downs due to falling market prices deplete bank capital and set off a downward spiral, as banks are forced to sell assets at “fire sale” prices, which in turn can lead to contagion as prices from asset fire sales of one bank become relevant for other banks. These arguments are often taken at face value, but evidence on problems created by fair-value accounting is rarely provided. We discuss these arguments and examine descriptive and empirical evidence that sheds light on the role of fair-value accounting for U.S. banks in the crisis. While large losses can clearly cause problems for banks and other financial institutions, the relevant question for our article is whether reporting these losses under fair-value accounting created additional problems. Similarly, it is clear that determining fair values for illiquid assets in a crisis is very difficult, but did reporting fair values of illiquid assets make...

...affected education, values, laws, entertainment, and the way of life for several citizens around the country. As society, it is extremely important to understand that although the valiant efforts and impact that African American’s had, particularly in the 1950’s and 1960’s, in helping restructure American culture, many of the racist views of the past still play apart in American society. The 1950’s is often described as the calm before the storm of the 1960’s. During this time period, society was very much conformed to the views of conservative living. The desire for security during this era, reinforced by McCarthyism at home and the Korean War, created was known as the cold war culture. During the post WWII period in America, the face of the nation changed greatly under President Truman and Eisenhower. Because of extreme paranoia caused by Communism following WWII, conformity in the United States became an ideal way to distinguish American culture from the rest of the world. Conformity became evident through the medium of culture, society, and politics throughout the era of the 1950’s. The country was in such fear of Communism, that President Truman led the government in a revolt against any who claimed to be a Communist in the American government. Again, due to fear of being ostracized, Eisenhower, the proceeding president, was reluctant to confront McCarythism. The...
