Firefighting is already a treacherous job, but the conditions have worsened in the span of a decade. Situations have become more severe in nature and, as a result, have called for more drastic actions. Fire fighters lay down their life for others every day and ask for nothing.. With a job that receives little credibility and does not pay nearly as much as it should, the benefits of such a life-threatening career do not seem remotely close to being worth the strenuous amount of effort that it requires. Though some may choose to deny it, firefighting has now become one of the most dangerous occupations out there. Dangers with the career field of Fire Science start with the applying and regulating of rules and codes. A prime example is OSHA’s …show more content…
More often than not, fire brigades will try to cut corners on their budgets and purchase cheaper breathing apparatuses in an attempt to make an inexpensive purchase for the brigade. It is rather a cruel injustice inflicted onto its employees, though. The problem with these apparatuses is that they are made with cheap but heavy material, frequently causing fire fighters to lose their balance. Due to these inferior imitations, about eighty-thousand related injuries have been reported. The fact is that equipment and protection for fire fighters are designed more for preventing combustion and flames, not for perfecting a person’s balance. However, it is important that fire fighters stay on their feet in a fire because once he or she is down, he or she may never be able to get back up. Not only do these apparatuses cause a problem with stability, but they also are heavy in a general sense. They, along with the helmets, are meant to increase center of mass but also increase overall weight and width. This also causes the equipment to catch on foreign objects, sometimes literally holding the fire fighters back. In addition, fire fighters are supposed to carry hoses over one shoulder and possibly another tool for the job, one more balancing obstacle to overcome. Studies show that fire fighters are already tuckered out within eighteen minutes of training with the SCBAs and the rest of their other equipment for the career. “It is important to remain cognizant of the fact that altering PPE [personal protective equipment] to improve balance and mobility may involve a trade-off that might decrease protection from heat and fire or increase risk for other injuries (Rosengren, Hsiao-Wecksler, Horn).” With that said, compromise in general will not fit well with firefighting, an exhausting and endangering factor to the career that can lead to something disastrous if not soon

The Great London Fire Research Paper

...The Great London Fire For this research paper, I wanted to choose a topic that I knew little about so I could further my knowledge about it. As I researched many topics to choose, I decided on “The Great London Fire.” The great fire began in the late sixteen hundred or seventeenth century. My goal in this paper is to obtain knowledge and spread information about the Great London Fire. An article on history.com stated,” The Great Fire of London was a disaster waiting to happen” (History.com). And a disaster it was. Ben Johnson stated “However that summer had been very hot and there had been no rain for weeks, so consequently the wooden houses and buildings were tinder dry” (Johnson). The fire began on September 2, 1666. It has been said that it started around the time of one in the morning. The fire actually started as a small fire in Thomas Farrinor’s Bakery. With many residents owning barns, animals, hay, and their houses being made from wood, the fire spread rapidly and easily. The Use of Baking Soda, Common Salt, and Vinegar as Fire Extinguisher

...THE USE OF BAKING SODA, COMMON SALT, AND VINEGAR AS FIRE EXTINGUISHER In Partial Fulfilment for the Requirements in Research II Researchers Verchiel B. Cubelo Ma. Rena N. Catoltol Nathaniel L. Perol S.Y. 2014-2015 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Nature and Importance of the Study Fire is a reaction involving fuel and oxygen that produces heat and light. Humans use fire to warm themselves and to cook food, and to start a fire, we commonly use lighters and matches, unlike the early humans who rub sticks or rocks. Today, people naturally focus not on starting fire but on using it productively and on preventing or extinguishing unwanted fires using fire extinguishers. These are portable devices used to put out fires of limited size. Such fires are limited into four classes, according to the type of material that is burning. Class A fires include those in which ordinary combustibles such as wood, cloth, and paper are burning. Class B fires are those in which flammable liquids, oils, and grease are burning. Class C fires are those involving live electrical equipment. Class D fires involve combustible metals such as magnesium, potassium and sodium. Each class of fire requires its own type of fire extinguisher. This study focuses on the use of common salt (sodium chloride), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), and vinegar (acetic acid) as fire extinguisher. Vinegar is a liquid consisting mainly of acetic acid (CH3COOH) and water (H2O). The acetic acid...

In fact, fire incidents have been recognized significant cause behind the greatest loss of life and property in Dhaka city. At present, Dhaka city is crowded with estimated population of more than 15 million people (Source: wikipedia), making one of the largest cities in the world having population density of 45,000/km2 or 115,200/sq mile (Source: wikipedia). With the passage of time, this ratio of density is ever increasing. Due to climate change issue, rural people are migrating to Dhaka city with an expectation of having least required livelihood. To meet up the need for habitation of these migrated people, more and more slums are being established without following any rules and plans. Unplanned city growth has also lead to the development of congested and unhealthy slums that are generally built with flammable materials. As a result, in the event of a fire, the fire spreads very rapidly causing great damage. There are many people in the city who lack knowledge about the safety or precautionary measures one should take to prevent a fire incident at their home or workplace. In addition, not many people also have proper knowledge or training about the preventive measures that the community should take...
