I first saw this remarkable piece of art when visiting a museum. It was a portrait of a woman of African descent. She wore a head covering called an Tignon. They were worn by women who derived from an African ancestry. In the 18th century women were mandated to wear it in the south of the United States under Spanish rule. The woman was painted with Acrylic and ink on linen. Her Tignon was painted in greyish neutral toned pattern, and her face and neck were covered with colors of yellow, red, and green patterns.
The artist who is responsible for this extraordinary painting is Firelei Baez. She is a contemporary artist from the Dominican Republic but is also of Haitian descent. I visited her exhibition when I was in
