...While the rock formations in the area are stunning, along with the barrel cactus, we had been drawn there by the palms, so we filed the West Fork away for future exploration. One interesting structure along the trail was a presumably authentic Native American dwelling, a short, round, palm-covered low dome, big enough for a sleeping area. With the palms towering above us, we continued up a moderate incline, following the creek, which due to the recent rains had some flowing water. As rain was threatening and would start to fall before we finished our hike, we were very aware that desert canyons like these are subject to flash floods, and after it started to rain, we decided to start back rather than take a chance, although it turned out that the rain was light and brief. The canyon is narrow, and the steep canyon walls were strewn with rock formations and cactus. The trail wound...

...little bit cliche. I tried not to look creepy and browsed clothing stores actually looking for something to wear this weekend. I observed many things that caught my attention. My first observation of the mall was a very busy hustle and bustle. No one really seemed to stop and take in their surroundings, instead they seemed to be focused on getting their shopping done or meeting up with friends. I also noticed that everyone was on their cell phone even if they were walking with someone. It seemed amazing that no one crashed into anything with their heads looking down towards their phone. The technology of these devices has made us almost oblivious to the world around us. For this reason, I have chosen to discuss cellular phones as my observational technology. Cell phones have replaced many of the items that we used to use in the past. Alarm clocks are a thing of the past due to the app on almost every cell phone now. Also, calendars, phone books, gps/maps are history. We no longer look for the new cool camera or ipod because music and cameras are built right into cell phones. Cameras are now made with technology that sends pictures right to your phone so you can edit and share them on social networks. This advancement is kind of sad. Sad because people almost have to be bribed into using cameras again. While I was at the mall I also noticed something quite interesting. People were using their cell phones to pay for their purchases and to swipe coupons. I couldn’t get close...

...colors because violet and red are completely opposite on the electromagnetic spectrum. I think that this will be the outcome because the green cellophane should prevent the radishes from synthesizing sugars as well as the other colors, and therefore not grow as tall as the others. Materials: The materials that I used were very simple to obtain. I visited the local Home Depot and Michael’s to buy all of the materials needed. The supplies I used are the following: * 3 sets of 8 connected peat pots. * 1 bag of Miracle Grow starter soil * 72 China Rose radish seeds * Well water * 1 red cellophane gift bag * 1 violet cellophane gift bag * 1 green cellophane gift bag * 1 pair of scissors * Three plastic forks * Camera * Measuring tape Method: The independent variable is the color of light, being either violet, red, or green. The dependent variable is the height of the radish sprouts. Some controlled variables in my experiment are the type of plant I used, the amount of...

He quickly tries covering his embarrassing act but with no success as the awkward stares continue from all around the table. ...even before you practice answering the questions you might be asked, you should have some general information about job interviews. Let's start by going over the different types of interviews you might face. The Screening Interview Your first interview with a particular employer will often be the screening interview. This is usually an interview with someone in human resources. It may take place in person or on the telephone. He or she will have a copy of your resume in hand and will try to verify the information on it. The human resources representative will want to find out if you meet the minimum qualifications for the job and, if you do, you will be passed on to the next step. The Selection Interview The selection interview is the step in the process which makes people the most anxious. The employer knows you are qualified to do the job. While you may have the skills to perform the tasks that are required by the job in question, the employer needs to know if you have the personality necessary to "fit in." Someone who can't interact well with management and co-workers may disrupt the functioning of an entire department. This ultimately can affect the company's bottom line. Many experts feel that this can be determined within the first several minutes of the interview. However, more...

...before putting shoes on before leaving the house, or eating with a fork instead of their hands. Here in the United States these are perfectly normal actions that people do daily, but in different cultures around the world these norms may vary dramatically. You have asked us to go out and break a social norm, and pay attention to the peoples reactions. This is a huge eye opener for me, and I am sure the others in the class as well. The concept really is a great way to examine yourself, your culture, and to think about how these normality’s have come to be. As for me this proved to be a little nerve racking as I probably fall into the slightly shy category. So I started thinking about some of these things I do everyday, and decided I was going to take my dog for a walk. But this time instead of looking forward as do most human beings, I would walk backwards, and let my dog lead me through the park. This was my first idea and I figured I would give it a try and see if I got reactions from people. The park where I was walking was completely packed with people because it was a Saturday morning. I couldn’t help but crack a smile as the people around me started to stare at me like I was completely retarded. I’m sure in some ways they were right. I kept walking, nearly trampling over an old man who was power walking. He gave me a confused look, and I could tell he wanted to tell me off. At first all of the looks made me feel very uncomfortable, but then I started...

...them with some episodes and some aspects of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Race Using Stuart Hall’s Encoding and Decoding Model of Communication, we will use a few examples from the show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air which deal with race. For each of these examples all four stages of the encoding and decoding model of communication will be applied. In one episode, Will and Carlton were driving to Palm Springs to meet up with the rest of their family, and they were following all laws and ended up getting pulled over and even taken to jail. For the first stage which is production, I look at examples of other movies or television shows, and look at what The Fresh Prince of Bel Air does. In a lot of movies and television shows, when there is a scene that involves a traffic stop, in order to build suspense, the cameras will only show the police officers feet walking up to the car, or a flashlight on the car. But in this scene, the cameras show the police officer’s whole body, in order to show that the officer was white and that it was a racially charged situation. This show was circulated on network television and they were targeting a very wide audience. If it was on cable it would cut down a large portion of the...

...CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 History A forklift (also called a lift truck, a high/low, a stacker-truck, trailer loader, side loader or a fork hoist) is a powered industrial truck used to lift and transport materials. The modern forklift was developed in the 1920s by various companies including the transmission manufacturing company Clark and the hoist company Yale & Towne Manufacturing. The forklift has since become an indispensable piece of equipment in manufacturing and warehousing operations. The middle 19th century through the early 20th century saw the developments that led to today's modern forklifts. The Pennsylvania Railroad in 1906 introduced battery powered platform trucks for moving luggage at their Altoona, Pennsylvania train station. World War I saw the development of different types of material handling equipment in the United Kingdom by Ransomes, Sims and Jeffries of Ipswich. This was in part due to the labor shortages caused by the war. In 1917 Clark in the United States began developing and using powered tractor and powered lift tractors in their factories. In 1919 the Towmotor Company and Yale & Towne Manufacturing in 1920 entered the lift truck market in the United States. Continuing development and expanded use of the forklift continued through the 1920s and 1930s. World War II, like World War I before, spurred the use of forklift trucks in the war effort. Following the war, more efficient methods for storing products in warehouses were being...

...e7.0 WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS 7.0 WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS To capitalize on warehouse operations, a number of best practices can be adopted to improve productivity and overall customer satisfaction. Although best practices vary from industry to industry and by the products shipped there are a number of best practices that can be applied to most companies. Best practices here are concerned with: • • • • • • • • • Housekeeping Customization Deterioration Special storage facilities Stock location Loss prevention Space optimization Stock reduction Warehouse efficiency 7.1 HOUSEKEEPING When we think of “housekeeping” we tend to think of the common phrase: “A place for everything and everything in its place.” But housekeeping means more than this. Indeed, good housekeeping practices – itemized below, eliminate clutter which is a common cause of accidents, such as slips, trips, and falls, and fires and explosions, reduce the chances of harmful materials entering the body (e.g., dusts, vapors), and improve productivity (the right tools and materials for the job will be easy to find). An orderly workplace will impress all who enter it – employees, visitors, customers, etc., help the company to keep it’s inventory to a minimum (easier to keep an accurate count of inventories), help the company to make the best use of its space, and make the workplace neat, comfortable and pleasant – not a dangerous eyesore. More importantly, good housekeeping improves the company’s image - it reflects a...
