First Person Shooter Games in Real Life

Shooter games have been around since man made the first projectile weapons, and his children tried to emulate the hunt. From running around with sticks, pretending to shoot the other kids, to the more evolved forms we have today. Today there are a variety of these types of games, though mainly these games are found on entertainment consoles. To experience these types of games for yourself in real life, without the controller, there are two to choose from, Airsoft or Paintball, and while similar, have many key differences, such as equipment used, projectiles, and game formats.

Airsoft and paintball both have very similar game formats, and type of equipment used. Paintball utilizes a weapon called a “marker” to propel a paint filled gelatin shell ball using compressed air or CO2, while an airsoft weapon, called a “replica”, uses battery power to fire a 6mm plastic BB from a very realistic looking weapon. Projectiles fired from the paintball marker are used to hit the other players and mark them with paint, and when they are hit, they are out of that current game by being called “dead”. The same goes with airsoft as well, but as there is no paint, it relies on the “honor system” or to call out when you have been hit. The team that still has players considered “alive” capture said flag, and return it to their base and call victory. Being a shooter based game, the object is to eliminate the other teams players and capture a flag placed somewhere on the field. This is repeated numerous times all day, or until everyone is tired and ready to go home.

No matter how similar the games of airsoft and paintball are, there are many differences. Cost of equipment to play airsoft, and be competitive, can cost anywhere from 200 dollars for a decent setup to 1000 dollar full camouflage load out. A set up that would be considered competitive would include: Camouflage pants and shirt, and AEG, or automatic electric gun, ammo, a tactical vest, and extra magazines for your replica. Paintball, on the other hand, can start out costing almost 2500 dollars for a competitive marker setup including: marker, pod belt for carrying extra paintballs, jersey and pants for tournament style play, facemask, and a hopper for the paintballs used in the marker. One of the other main difference is the type and cost of the ammunition to play. Airsoft is by far the cheaper game to play based on ammunition alone. A bottle full of airsoft bb’s (about 5000 pellets) costs around 20 dollars, where as a case of 2000 paintballs is around the 65-80 dollar range.

One other thing that is similar but different is the game play. While airsoft actively preaches camouflaging and stealth, paintball is flashier with brightly colored jerseys. Airsoft is best played in a field that has natural cover, as it mimics military strategy and tactics, as where paintball is played on a turf field with inflatable cover called bunkers. Paintball players use these bunkers as cover to shoot from at the other team, while providing cover for themselves. Airsoft games are capable of being almost an hour long each, as you stalk the other team, and paintball has seen games finished as fast as 30 seconds.

In conclusion, while both games share many key points, they are radically different. Paintball and airsoft have not been around long in the scope of things, but are what most of the shooter games have evolved into. While different in the types of equipment and ammunition used, and format played, these are two excellent shooter games to play yourself, without the need for controller and game console. Who knows what the future will bring in the shooter games industry, but people will look forward to progress none the less.

...changed the world and how we interact with one another by incorporating itself into almost all aspects of modern life in the developed world. Upon the availability of readily accessible Internet-access across the world people have been able to connect with each other on an unprecedented level. This has tremendously impacted many industries in particular the video game industry. It has influenced developers to begin creating massively successful games that are strictly or predominately played over the Internet on consoles, computers and mobile devices with some games even requiring a monthly or yearly subscription and further optional in game purchases. * The Internet has also spurred the console gaming industry to create digital distribution platforms such as the Xbox Games Store, Playstation Store and Nintendo eShop, which allows gamers to download videos games directly to their consoles from the comfort of their home. Through the use of social media (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) people are able to share more and more of their daily life activities, goals and accomplishments with each other. The gaming industry has not missed the opportunity to amalgamate itself into the narrative that is our online identity. Developers have integrated the ability to share gaming achievements, photographic and video footage via social media into a great deal of modern video games. * Below I have written some strategic and general advice for Mr. Wilkinson to consider. Are Gamers Really a Threat?

...December 2014 Are Gamers Really a Threat? Within the last fifteen years, the video game industry has grown exponentially and is now arguably one of the most robust industries in the entertainment world. Video game sales have more than quadrupled in this time as well, which accounts for this multibillion dollar industry. Inside this enormous industry, hundreds of genres span the base of the industry but a few genres make up the core. Within this core are game categories, such as FPS (First Person Shooters), which have some aspect of violence to it. The popularity of these violent video games has risen greatly within the last 5 years. In 2008, from the age group 12-17 in the United States, 97% of them played video games, and 10 of the top 20 best-selling video games in the United States contained violence (ProCon.com). These violent video games are attributed to the cause of increase in school shootings as well as increases in domestic and youth violence. Critics of these violent video games argue that the because the violence is encouraged to do well in the game through reward, that the player becomes desensitized towards the violence and will teach children that violence is an acceptable way to resolve conflicts (ProCon.com). Video game advocates claim that the research is deeply flawed because there has been no link between video game violence and that of social violence. Many argue that the game actually relieves anger and aggression in a safe outlet (ProCon.com), as well as it...

...Video Games First off, you would imagine how thrilled our team was to have to write a paper during the holidays, with a deadline just two days after the winter break, so we came up with a clever way to bypass all the research work needed and just start writing about things we already knew and also loved doing, in order to grasp a more subjective approach on the chosen topic. People often say that if you don’t truly believe in the things you are working on and don’t have fun whilst doing them, you won’t be successful in any of your endeavors. This means you have to work with passion, because the first person you are ultimately going to sell the idea of the finished product is yourself, and if you can’t fully embrace the concept, it’s going to be even harder to pitch it to someone else. That being said, we quickly searched for a topic that each member of our team could relate to, and also provide valuable insight upon his experience and personal preferences on the subject at hand. In the end we settled on the topic of video games, due to the wide variety available these days. Figure 1. Pacman machine Figure 1. Pacman machine The first ever commercially produced video games were arcade games back in the early ‘70s in the United States, and I think we all remember in movies those huge machines that took up quite a lot of space in pubs, where people could play games such as Pacman, Space Invaders or Donkey Kong. They were very successful and in fact, they...

Bad Behavior Cannot Be Blamed on Video Games

...Bad Behavior cannot be Blamed on Video Games Fred Smith University of Tennessee Abstract For years, concerned citizens, policy makers and parents have thought that violence in the media and now violent video games are one of the main contributing factors to aggressive and violent behavior in some of our society’s teenagers. Past studies have indicated a link between these video games and aggressive behavior. Yet, as video games sales sore to new heights, violent crime committed by our youth is decreasing. Empirical evidence along with some recent studies shows that there is not a link between the two. It is more likely that aggressive teenagers are drawn to violent video games than violent video games are causing teenagers to be aggressive. Bad Behavior cannot be Blamed on Video Games How times have changed. Imagine coming home from work on a Friday evening after a very long week to the sounds of boys wrestling in your living room. They are screaming and yelling at the top of their lungs, all at the same time. You hear things like “hit him”, “watch out”, “get over here”, “jump on him” and “get him”. You quickly make your way to the living room to see five nearly motionless teenagers wearing headsets and microphones. Two of them are sitting on the couch with their laptops on the coffee table. One is in the far corner in a rocking chair using a TV tray. The last two are set up of the card table...

Criminal Justice

...Digdug, or maybe that little paddle ball game on the Atari console. There were no genres of videogames back then, back then it was just videogames as there weren’t many of them out there. But nowadays videogames are more complex. The graphics have been enhanced greatly; there are many storylines, and consoles and ways to play said consoles. They even have motion activated gaming on a console called the Nintendo Wii. But no matter what console one is playing there will usually be a genre associated with the game being played. There are five major categories in which one should categorize his or her videogames, and some of them have sub categories. These genres include Action games, Adventure games, Roleplaying games, simulation games, and Strategy games. If one were to look at these genres that person would notice that there are many sub categories, as well as a list of games to go along with these categories so it is important to look at each genre as being more diverse instead of being specific to only one game. The first and probably the broadest category is action. An action game requires quick reflexes, accuracy and timing to overcome obstacles. There are few sub categories such as fighting games, platform games, and FPS (first person shooter) games. Fighting games are those in which two opponents face off in an arena (usually with melee based weapons) and face off till one of the players is eliminated. However some fighting games like the Super Smash Brothers series...

Violent Video Games

...of Violent Video Games Over 90% of youth in Canada aged between 12 and 17 play or have played a violent video game throughout their life. The industry is now a 91.95 billion dollar market with the top selling series being “Call of Duty” a violent, gruesome, but entertaining first person shooter. A study conducted by Harvard Health Publications says that, “Youth exposure to violent media (including video games) can contribute to real-life violent behavior and harm children in many other ways.” Recently debates have been sparked as to whether violent video games are actually as bad as they seem. Realistic graphics technology, first hand engagement and behavioural changes are all effects as to why an older generation will respond negatively to a widely popular video game while a younger generation who engage in these video games will not. Graphics have improved significantly through the years of gaming and it has become very hard to tell the difference between fake and real. From blasting out enemy brains with an automatic machine gun to stabbing innocent bystanders, this is what the gamers have always wanted. Gamers have complained about how graphics were never good enough. Is it really healthy for our youth to be witnessing these gruesome events in such realistic situations? An article written by Tech Times states that, “The research evidence clearly indicates that the violence can make them (gamers) numb to the pain and suffering of others.” Can a video game really affect how...

Cause Of School Shootings

...We must look at violence in general whether it be from the media, video games, movies, television show, or even their own environment. This violence factor is not only an origin itself but can also be the result of the aforementioned causes. As remarked in The Badger Herald, “people get shot in television shows, movies, and video games but they are able to get up and walk away” (Duffey) Our youth are not being taught the impact or consequences of real-world actual shootings. It is just a game to them. Does watching this kind of violence eventually teach them to be “mentally ill” as we know it? They do not have the mental capability to understand that killing someone is wrong. Is it instilled in their brain that they can keep coming back with a new life every time they get shot? The common-sense coherence of what is right and wrong is not there. We should be teaching our youth the correct and safe use of firearms instead of letting them believe in made up world rules. So, is mental illness a product of the environment these people are brought up into? Even if it is not, seeing a potential mental illness in a person could prevent these shootings. As John Malcolm states of school attackers, “they are...

Dinka's Influence On George Drinka

...whether or not video games impact the amount of violence individuals display after playing violent video games. His stance on this debate is that they are a factor of the violence displayed and he uses Sandy Hook’s mass shooter, Adam Lanza, as the central example to further explain his standpoint. Adam Lanza is described as a twenty-year old man who was socially withdrawn, possibly had a mental disorder, that being either autism or Asperger's Syndrome, and most importantly, an avid gamer who would keep to themselves in the basement and continuously play Call of Duty for hours on end until the day of the shooting (Drinka). Drinka makes this connection to another mass murderer, Anders Breivik, who also used the game, Call of Duty, as training before also committing his heinous crimes. Correlation Between Video Game Violence And Aggression

...between two factors: video game violence and aggression in those who play these video games. Parents all over the country are starting to see the effects that these games may have on their children and what they could influence their children to do. Many have argued that video game violence does not create brutality among children and that they provide a safe escape for children to release aggressive behavior in a safe way, but there is evidence that says otherwise. Violent video games have been around since the early years of video game production. Games like “Death Race” and “Mortal Kombat” were among the first controversial games due to their grisly and disturbing images. “Cluster’s Revenge (1983) is a game in which the player would portray the character of General Custer. It allows you to do quite horrible and inhumane things like raping and abusing a Native American woman to gain points. These were the kind of games which started off a wave of violence among young teens such as Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. These young men were the ones who engaged in the killing of 13 people in Columbine high before killing themselves. Columbine high school went through a tremendous amount of terror when these adolescents took the lives of innocent kids. The Columbine school shooting was an...

...Video Games Video games can be classified into several distinct categories. Though some video games are all basically the same thing, there are things that entertain people but have other many enjoyments like education for some kids. In today's world video games range from various console gaming systems like Nintendo 64 which is one of the oldest, and Microsoft's Xbox that are hooked up to televisions to handheld wireless gaming systems that can be carried in your pocket like Nintendo's Game boy or the PSP. Video games are most often classified into groups more based on what is most popular and what system it is played on. Kids enjoy games that have to do with story lines and keep them occupied because if it was boring they would not play it. Most of the kids today enjoy three types of video games, role-playing, shooting, and sports because they are the most fun and competitive. Role-playing video games’ gameplay is like the well know game Dungeons & Dragons and Skyrim. Most of these games get the gamer in the role of one or more "missions" with a certain player who specialize in specific skill sets such as hand to hand combat or casting magic spells. While progressing through the predetermined storyline that the game already has set up all players will end up with same ending result. Many missions involve maneuvering these character or characters through another world, usually populated with crazy giant monsters, that allows access to more important game locations...

Video Game Violence

...Violence in Real Life In the movie Wreck-It Ralph, one of my favorite quotes is “When did video games become so violent and scary”. I’d say that video games have gotten way more violent since Ralph Baer invented the first video game in May 1967. In more recent years we have multiple violent video games with the recent releases from series such as Halo, Call of Duty and a plethora of other games that we have grown to know and love. However, worrisome teachers and parent have often asked the question ‘Is this game making children more violent?’ or the ever popular ‘Is this game helping society?”. In this essay I will discuss the points about why I think video games aren’t violent, and how some could even help society....
