First Snow Day

...First Snow Day Looking out the window thinking that it was the most wonderful sight I’ve ever saw. It was the day that the entire city of Detroit, MI was covered in so much snow; everything had come to a halt. Low pressure had come in 24 hours before, and less than twenty-four hours and twelve feet of snow later, the entire city was drenched in the snow’s icy hands. There wasn’t anything that you could do because everyone was at the mercy of the snow and I loved it. I wanted to run in my daughters’ room to wake her so that she could see the white blanket that covered everything outside. Just the sight of twelve feet of snow was too much for me to handle, and many abandoned buildings collapsed as a result of it. As I peered out the window of our upstairs apartment building, the bright light reflecting from the snow nearly blinded me. When my vision cleared, and I was able to see, I was in awe at the sight that I was seeing. It seemed like someone had taken a big bag of sparkling sugar and poured it upon the earth. The normal things that would usually have met my eyes in the morning were mere blobs in the snow, indistinguishable among the white blanket that covered the city. As I went downstairs to open the door to have a look further outside, my path outside was blocked by a wall of snow; unmoving and solid. A slight chill crept over my body as the cold air poured into the warm building and I ran back inside of my warm and toasty apartment. I watched as the snow plows moved...

It Sifts from Leaden Sieves (Essay)

...wrists of posts As ankles of a queen Then stills its artisans like ghosts, Denying they have been.  Paraphrase The snow falls from the sky through the clouds like flour. It powders all the trees. It fills every cracks of the road with the white. It makes the mountain and the plain becomes flat land in white. As far as we can see is white from east unto the east again. The snow reaches the fence, and wraps it by rail until cannot be seen but white snow. The snow deals the sky layer. Coming noisy and full fill the farm acres of joints where harvest were, recordless but for them. The snows annoy the pole of posts as well turned of queen. Then stills its artisans and disappear in silence, denying they have been make an annoyance. ☺ The Imageries of “It Sifts from Leaden Sieves” There are some imageries used in this poem, but, personification is the major imagery used by the writer. It can be found in these sentences: 1. It sifts from leaden sieves, 2. It powders all the wood. 3. It fills with alabaster wool 4. It makes an even face 5. It reaches to the fence, 6. Best Ski

...Mark Rogers Best Ski Day I was the first person to ski off of the chairlift that day, arriving at the summit of Bosquets Mountain, nestled in the heart of the Berkshires. It was the type of day when the clouds seemed to blanket the sky, leaving no clue that the sun, with its powerful light, even existed anymore. It was not snowing, but judging by the damp, musty, stale scent in the air, I realized it would be only a short time before the white flakes overtook the mountain. As I readied myself to make the first run, I took a moment to appreciate my surroundings. Somehow things seemed much different up here. The wind, nonexistent at the bottom, began to gust. Its cold bite found my nose. Its quick and sudden swirling movement kicked loose snow into my face, forcing me to zip my jacket over my chin. It's strange how the gray clouds, which seemed so far above me at the bottom, really didn't appear that high anymore. If I had a tall enough ladder, I might be able to touch them. As I gazed out over the landscape, the city below seemed unrecognizable. The enormous buildings which I had driven past earlier looked like dollhouses a child might play with. The towering smokestacks of the factories would not have caught my eye had it not been for the tiny stream of gray emerging from them. At this distance, the smoke spiraled upward like tree branches reaching for the sky. The air was raw and stung me through my many layers of clothing. There was snow all around me. It was on the trail and...

Personal Narrative: The Double Diamond Trail

...The third attempt was the furthest I’ve ever gone on a double diamond trail, an impressive 50 feet. The snow was very slippery and easy to glide on, which made going down the first hill very easy. However, the snow was still very slippery and easy to glide on, which made the first turn much harder. Some freestyle skiers’ mouths drop when they hear of a 1,800 degree rotation in the air. I did an 2,160 degree rotation into the catch fence. Judges would give me many points, if I was in the air, that is. Unfortunately, I found myself upside down in the catch fence for the second time in 30 seconds. Snow is much less secure and solid than ice, so naturally when I did a hockey-style turn, the skis had glided over the snow instead of digging in and...

Snow Storm Descriptive Writing

...knows there’s a lot of snow during the winter months. One winter we had a snow storm. I was lying in the bed with my sisters, warm and toasty. Out the window, I could see the wind blowing the snow across the field. It wasn’t enough snow to close the schools down. I could hear my Mother calling us to get up for school. Mom came into our bedroom and told us to get dress because the schools in New York were not closing today. Mom was getting ready for work. She was a nurse’s aide at a senior citizen facility. Before our Mom left for work, she told us not to cut across the field in front of our apartment building to get to school. “The snow is too deep. Go the long way around. Are you guys listening?” We all said...

Counting Animals

...thick. When the caribou gather, the groupings are monitored until biologists are convinced that nearly all of the caribou in the herd are included. Assuming the weather cooperates, they fly over the herd in an aircraft fitted with a belly-mounted camera and photograph the entire herd on large-format film. After the film is processed, biologists sit in the office with magnifying glasses and count every caribou on the photos. This process takes several weeks to complete this type of census. Moose don't gather in large groups. Their population estimate surveys are performed in the fall and winter when the right combination of weather, snow depth, and day length allow biologists to fly and see the moose. It's hard to believe that such a large animal can be so hard to find or see trust me it is. The biologist usually wait until after a good amount of snow is on the ground before attempting the census on moose. The area to be censused is broken into smaller sample units based on terrain or habitat types. The sample units are stratified; that is, a team of biologists flies over them and identifies whether moose are...

Personal Narrative: Cross-Country Skiing

...Welcome to the amiable town of West Dover, Vermont, home of Mount Snow, the purveyor to the ski and snowboard addict for his fix. It's winter and I am in this placid place to enjoy a favorite pastime of mine. I am not here for conventional skiing, but for the "alternative" version known as cross-country skiing. My sport takes place not on Mount Snow, but across from it, in a comfortable community called Timber Creek. When I cross-country ski at Timber Creek, I experience an inundating sense of euphoria, which makes cross-country my favorite sport. . As I step outside I am amazed at God's creation - everything covered in snow is sparkling with radiance and the sky is as majestic and blue as the oceans of the Seychelles' islands(Don't get excited-I haven't been...

Movie Review for Comp 1

...behind. Jack makes a daring leap across what seems to be a 7 foot crevice in the ice. He makes it across and gets the samples but as he is about to leap back across to the safety of his colleges the ice splits again, and he narrowly escapes falling in the crevice. After getting the samples back to the lab and testing them he realizes that there is an issue with the samples and also that there was a sheet of Ice the size of Texas that broke off, so he goes to a convention to warn other people of the facts that he has learned. Discussion One thing that I liked about this movie is the snow. The fact that the frigid cold could freeze your skin, crystalize your lungs, freeze Jet fuel at -200 Fahrenheit in a matter of seconds. Also it froze the ocean solid enough that it could be driven on and walked upon. It was pretty cool how they could drive across the ocean and the super deep snow and nothing happens to them. Flag poles and flags were frozen stiff at the eye of the storm and this is what all humans should have been aware of but some did not care and chose to trek on anyway and they lost their lives. The crazy thing about the weather was that only the northern states and mid-western states were...

Skiing Versus Snowboarding

...Skiing or Snowboarding? Skiing and snowboarding are both great activities to enjoy during the winter months. Not only do they offer a nice leisure experience, but they are both beneficial to your health as they are both excellent forms of exercise for whatever skill level you may be. Deciding which activity to partake in should be thought with care and consideration. They are both costly activities but can result in a generous payoff for a person’s mind and body. When deciding which winter sport to participate in, first consider the various similarities and differences between skiing and snowboarding. As with any other sport or hobby, the equipment used is a decision to consider. Skiing involves a pair of skis appended to boots by the way of bindings that clip in and the use of two poles to help keep balance. A person’s body is positioned facing forward with feet straight ahead, facing the front. Snowboarding on the other hand uses a single board which is attached to a person’s feet using special boots and bindings facing sideways with the body perpendicular to the direction of movement. The stance is an important factor when deciding which sport to participate in due to the abundant varieties of skiing and snowboard positions. The rider must determine which position feels the most comfortable for the direction in which an individual’s body faces as this is a primary aspect of both activities. Some other factors to consider are the basics of the sport, such...

The Beauty of Snow

...Have you ever seen where the first snow flake folly Is it on the country road, on the branch of an old oak tree, on the wheat fields in the plain, or between the peaks of the mountain range? See the snowflakes leaping, dancing like flowers in the whirling wind. The flowers have six angles. Sometimes they are like stars. Sometimes they are only white dots, and they keep on falling gently in silence. Without your knowing it, the fields, houses, trees and the whole earth are enwloped in a thin coat of snow. I love snow, because it is saintly pure. Winter differs from the other seasons in that it is not as warmag spring, neither as hot as summer, nor as sad as autumn. The snowflake has her own grace and inspiration. It seems tender, yet it is amazingly attractive. The snowflakes are flying here and there and everywhere. It seems as if they are little stars in the universe moving along their own orbit. Look! What a spotless silvery world, how great, how magnificent! Away from the crowds of people,I stroll alone in the snow. Standing in the snow, flakes of snow float over my head, kissing me on the cheecks and falling on my eyebrow. Some make their way into my collar and some tall into my mouth. It tastes sweet. Looking at this silver white world, thoughts well up in my mind. I feel as if I had become a part of them ...... Personal Narrative-Sacrifice

...The mountains clustered together like they were cold, and under all that snow I don't doubt they were. I imagined them to shiver under their white coats, the real cause of the avalanches perhaps. Perhaps in that rock, they think in the way timeless creatures must, with no regard for time, no concept of what it must be to hurry, be anxious or sad. I'd like to think that deep in the tonnes of granite is a spirit of the earth, slumbering since the time of the dinosaurs or before. At this point I can't tell which of them the road will take me to, it disappears in the forest only fifty meters or so ahead. I only hope that it passes through a valley between two of them rather than having to scale a peak. The mountain path had become slick under the...

In the year the company organized this promotion, certain things happened such as; there was a mistake whereby the insurance company gave Toro a quotation of two point one percent of the covered snow thrower’s retail value. Additionally, the snowfall happened to be even more compared to the other previous years and Toro Company was exempted from giving a payment of 10 percent as discount (for awarding the vendors in the period of fall). With all these factors considered, Toro is the one that benefited and therefore, its profits grew upwards by an estimated eight percent. In addition, all this occurrences favored both the consumers and the vendors who at the end of it all became happy. According to the insurance company’s point of view analysis, it is true to state that the American Home Assurance was the most affected in terms of high risks. Considering this case study, American Home Assurance agreed to cover the claims brought by the program which for two point one percent of the retail value of the snow thrower.
