Chapter 1- Where do I Start?

In Youth Ministry it is like running a race, just like in the Christian life. We must train and gradually build up endurance and strength. We gain strength by developing our “faith, skills, leadership, experience, character, disciple, and passion.”
The first of the top ten “youth ministry commitments,” is to move slowly. We cannot change the world in one day, nor can we change every kid in our youth group in a day. We also cannot constantly make changes to our youth group as soon as we think things are not working. Fields suggest that we write down things that we need to change, or want to change and have them to refer back to rather than making immediate changes.
The second is to check motives and evaluate your heart. As youth ministers, or interns, we need to evaluate our motives for working with the youth. IF our motives are not pure, they will be exposed.
The third is to not get caught up in the numbers. Usually people will determine how effective your youth group is by the numbers but this is not a game to get caught up in. Field explains, “bigger isn’t better; healthier is better.”
The fourth is to steer clear of criticizing prior youth ministers or inters. Criticizing others just shows your lack of self-esteem.
The fifth is to avoid comparing. “When you compare you lose.” You cannot compare yourself to others, because then you will be holding yourself to human standards rather than God’s.
The sixth is to focus on priorities. Sometimes you have to say no to things. Doing more, is not always good, being too busy can cause you to lose the focus on the most important

The History of Christain Education

...CHRISTAIN EDUCATION OF YOUTH A study of the history of professional youth ministry shows that over the years they come a long way. In the late 1950s churches began to invest significantly in salary funds in staff positions for youth ministry before that the youth ministry was done by mostly volunteer workers who were unqualified and poorly trained. Also it can be said that evangelical churches grudgingly instituted the youth ministry because they feared that Para church organization would take the youth away from the churches. GAINING A SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE Youth ministry in the 1950s was a calculated attempt of countering the influence of secular entertainment on Christian youth and they introduced 1. Christian film in the hopes that to be a possible alternative to movies in secular theaters. 2. High powered recreational and social programs were developed as an alternative to school dances 3. Large rallies were organized in major cities with famous Christian entertainer as a way to convince youth that they could be Christians and still be popular and well liked In the 1950s entertainment was used to retain youth within the church .The 1960s was a landmark decade in the country. The church’s approach to youth ministry was greatly affected by the sociological and cultural times. Youth in the country began to demonstrate that they cared greatly about the issues related to the world they lived. Those involved in youth ministry realized that young people...

Church Leadership

...Church Leadership and Ministry Evaluation Paper For this paper, I did a self-evaluation. 1. Would you say that your congregation (or the people within your particular department or area of ministry) is “Living Out the Mind of Christ” (i.e. Unity, Humility, Selflessness) as they interact, serve, and minister to/with each other? How specifically do you as a ministry leader teach, cultivate, and maintain “The Mind of Christ” in your area of ministry? My area of ministry ranges from grades 6-12. At these young ages, students are still trying to find themselves. As they do so, they crave and desire a relationship with God. My team and I are very dedicated to teaching them that they are all united as one, and God loves each of them individually. This unity will hopefully teach them that they can lean on fellow believers their age and grow spiritually together. 2. Would you consider yourself a “Wounded Healer?” Also, would you please share an example where you have ministered to a person who is/was “wounded” in the same manner that you once were? (Cf. II Corinthians 1:3-5) Yes, I consider myself a wounded healer. I went through a physically and emotionally abusive relationship about three years ago. In going through this, I learned to find my self worth in God before I looked to others. I have been able to use my story to capture many girls in toxic relationships. One in particular was a girl my own age. She had been dating a guy for three years and he was emotionally...

Building Church Memberships

...Pastor L. Collins, Senior New Hope Christian Fellowship Ministries P O Box 956606 Marietta, Georgia 30064 Greetings Pastor Collins: I am submitting the attached proposal for consideration by you, the First Lady, and the members of New Hope Christian Fellowship Ministries. This proposal identifies the problems of declining membership at your church as well as possible solutions. I have been a member of New Hope Christian Fellowship Ministries for over seven years and have watched the revolving door of members for that time. In the last eight months, I have observed many members leaving and attendance declining but unlike in the past, new members are not coming into the ministry. As a result of the declining membership and attendance numbers, the ministry is also experiencing low donations and the ministry is struggling to pay its bills. During the last few months, the significantly low donations have begun to threaten the future of New Hope. This proposal will address the problems that I have mentioned; it will also offer solutions that have the potential to provide significant relief to your ministry. Your ministry has been serving the Cobb County, Georgia area for over 20 years and my objective is to create avenues that will keep this ministry thriving for many years to come. Please review the materials that I have included for your edification. The various parts include an abstract, which is a summary of the full report that is also contained. The feasibility...

...groups -- one-sample, two-sample, and k-sample tests. Now we turn our attention to basic statistical procedures that measure the degree of association between variables. Dr. Wesley Black studied the relationship between rankings of selected learning objectives in a youth discipleship taxonomy between full-time church staff youth ministers and seminary students enrolled in youth education courses at Southwestern Seminary.1 Questionnaires were returned by 318 students and 184 youth ministers.2 Ten objectives in each of five categories (Personal Ministry, Christian Theology and Baptist Doctrine, Christian Ethics, Baptist Heritage, and Church Polity and Organization) were ranked by these two groups. The basic question raised by Black in this study was whether students prioritized discipleship training objectives for youth in the same way as full-time ministers in the field. Using the Spearman rho correlation coefficient, Black found the correlations of rankings generated by students and ministers of the ten items for each of five categories were as follows: Personal Ministry, 0.915; Christian Theology and Baptist Doctrine, 0.867; Christian Ethics, 0.939; Baptist Heritage, 0.939; and Church Polity and Organization, 0.927. Each of these are strong positive correlations3 between the rankings of objectives by students and ministers. 1 Wesley Black, “A Comparison of Responses to Learning Objectives for Youth Discipleship Training from Ministers of Youth in Southern Baptist...

Christ: Model of Today's Youth

...folks but the very first we notice about Jesus in that He was “one of us”. He loved children and they returned His affections. When some of Jesus’ followers tried to restrain the youngsters from clustering around Him, our Lord said “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14 NIV) Every one of us knows Jesus Christ but did you know that Christ is the model of Today’s Youth? Without any doubt He is the unique personality of all time a man who changed the course of history so dramatically that almost nothing is untouched by his influence. In almost every country in this world, the front page of every single newspaper acknowledges Him. That’s because every date is marked from His birth more than two thousand years ago. The life Jesus led, the miracles He performed the words He spoke, His death on the cross, His resurrection, His ascent into heaven these all point to the fact that He was not merely a man but more that a man. Yet the very power of His name was destined to overthrow the most widespread. So we know that Christ’s sacrifice all the things to save our life. That’s great had done God to all of us that serve as model in each of us. Statement of the Problem This study focuses on the influence of Christ as a model of Today’s Youth. It discusses the work of Jesus and the sacrifices that He did to save our lives, also His role in influencing the moral value of the Youth. Moreover it aims to...

Full Inclusion: Down Syndrome

...Deborah Cobra had just started the church with a small group of people, and the Lord was already bringing in the broken-hearted, the sick and the maimed” (The Rock Church, 2013). With the promise from Isaiah 12:3, “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation”, The Rock Church begins a life-long difference in a broken city. Then after many years, a mother and her son with Down syndrome named “Brian” came to service. The church was developing and expanding its structures at the time. The Pastor was preaching about how the members could help by donations to pay off the upgraded church. Pledges were being made, and Brian was only a young child at the time. He wanted to pledge. He wanted to get involved. His mother was astounded by Brian’s need to be involved. At first, the mother did not think of Brian being able to determine his involvement in the pledge; however she did not want to confuse the love of the Lord that Brian was clearly showing. She did not think it was possible for him to get, but she quickly learned she was wrong. This is when RCWOC decided to make a fully inclusive children’s youth ministry program, and they named it after Brian. RCWOC is dedicated in meeting the needs of all children that attend the church. Down Syndrome: A Full Inclusion Plan for The Rock Church Like today’s many churches, The Rock Church & World Outreach Center (RCWOC) is a Nondenominational Church located in the older part of San Bernardino, California. Fallacy of Taking Development to the People

...International Journal of Contemporary Research Vol. 4 No. 1; January 2014 Kenya’s Social Development Proposals and Challenges: Review of Kenya Vision 2030 First Medium-Term Plan, 2008-2012 Ezekiel Mbitha Mwenzwa Department of Social Sciences Karatina University P. O. Box 1951, Karatina, Kenya. Joseph Akuma Misati Department of Sociology Maasai Mara University P. O. Box 861 20500, Narok, Kenya. Abstract Kenya faces several development challenges including poverty, disease, unemployment, negative civic engagement among others. The development bottlenecks worsened following the introduction of the IMF/World Bank-propelled Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs) of the late 1970s and early 1980s. While the SAPs had envisaged benefits, they largely became part of the problem rather than the solution to development in Kenya. Accompanying these were negative civic engagements, particularly, ethnic conflict and political maladministration especially after the re-introduction of multiparty politics in the early 1990s. These drawbacks notwithstanding, development planning went on culminating in the Economic Recovery Strategy for Wealth and Employment Creation (ERSWEC) 2003-2007 in 2002 and its successor, the Kenya Vision 2030 in 2007. While the former was implemented, the latter is on course with the First Five Year Medium-Term Plan running from 2008 to 2012 recently concluded. The blueprint is driven by three pillars, namely; The economic, social and political pillars...
