...person’s first week at college is one of the most significant transition periods in their life. It is ultimately one of the most surprising, frightening, and enjoyable experiences they will have. My first week at NDSU was no exception to this. There were things about my first week that I was completely not expecting, things that didn’t surprise me at all, and things that have been very rewarding. First, multiple things about my first week of college surprised me. One of these things was that the days don’t go by nearly as slowly as I thought they would. In high school, I was at school from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on any given day, and no matter what, the time seemed to go unbearably slow. I thought that I would be experiencing the same feeling of the day dragging on in college. Because I don’t live on campus, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I have a 5 p.m. class, on those days I am typically on campus from 9:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. I didn’t think I would be able to handle long school hours again, especially hours even longer than I was at high school. However, there are so many ways to stay busy at NDSU that the hours practically fly by in a comparison to high school. The seemingly shorter school days are just one of the things that surprise me about NDSU. Second, there were several things about college that met my expectations exactly. For example, going into college I figured that there was going to be a very large amount of homework in comparison to high school. I was definitely...

...students in a public school system? The purpose of this study is to test whether motivational instructions improve performance on standardized tests with students in two different schools in the Chicago Public Schools System. Figuring out whether doing simple things such as changing the way the test is presented to positively impact the way the students take the test and their resulting scores ways heavily on those who give these standardized tests. An e-mail will be sent around to all elementary school principals and fourth grade teachers in the Public Schools System in Chicago. This e-mail will discuss the concern of high standardized test scores in all schools across the United States. It will also ask these principals and teachers if they will be willing to participate in a simple study that will give educators more insight as to whether the way a teacher presents the instructions of their tests has an impact on the scores of these students. Of the schools that send back an e-mail stating that they are interested in the study, five to ten schools will be chosen. These schools will be chosen according to the number of students in the fourth grade, male to female ratio, their average test scores, socioeconomic status, and representation of the population. The schools with the most similar of these variables will be chosen to participate in this study. These students will already be divided into groups of about 150 students according to the elementary school these students...

...Spirit week is something a lot of students look forward to, a chance to show your ideas and express yourself. Although spirit week can be distracting it can also have good qualities like, being a stress reliever, showing school pride, and showing your own creativity. During this week kids get to be weird and have fun without worrying about what others think of them. Spirit week has a mass amount of work into it and the fun had during it is all worth it. Additionally, adults get to participate to and have fun which is important since they are always working. Stress is something students and teachers have, but during spirit week kids seem less stressed during this time because they're having fun and participating. First off, less stress equal to kids being more focused in class and not worrying about assignments that are due. Secondly, students are more calm because they're having fun and getting out all of their energy during wiki and lunch so by the time they get into class they're not all energized. Lastly, it can be a time for teachers to relax a bit and also have fun. Their students are always energetic and stressed outside of spirit week, but it subsides so the teachers aren't...

...CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND Introduction The government might have realized that necessary steps must be taken in order to improve the education system in the country, leading them to make and consider some changes to keep up with the other countries. First, there was that bold move of implementing the K to 12 program where basic education will last for 12 years instead of the traditional 10 years. And maybe also because of climate change, just recently, there were reports about Malacañang being open to studying proposals to change the school calendar. However, the Congress still has the final say on the matter. This means that the academic calendar would run from August to May or September to June instead of June to March. This was intended to avoid the suspension of class because of typhoons just like last year, about 25 typhoons, including the Nov. 9 super typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines and also to copy the academic calendar of most countries in order to attract foreign students to study in the Philippines and assist the enrollment abroad of Filipino students and teachers. This will also allow Philippines a greater synchronization with the ASEAN, Northeast Asian and American and European universities since a lot of training programs and activities of summer institutes happen in June and July in which, in the proposed academic calendar, these months don’t have classes. At present, five universities named University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila...

In high school, it was not too difficult to get by with minimal effort and attention paid in class. However, my first week at Ole Miss showed me that college indeed does require much effort and actually doing the readings from the textbook that you are assigned. I do not have a problem with doing my homework, it is just something that I have observed and expected before I started college. There are many things about college that were not at all surprising to...

...classes a week of many different types. Each class ranges between 45-60 minutes in length. I became a part of band and choir when I was in middle school and was the first chair flute player through all three middle school years, despite challenges from all the other players. I received an award from my band director for my musical talents. I became a part of a middle school show choir in my eighth-grade year called “Cougar First Edition.” We sang and danced for different events around town and rehearsed for three hours once a week. I auditioned for the Varsity Singers as an incoming freshman and made it in with only five other freshmen. Varsity Singers is a competitive show choir that puts in a minimum two three-hour rehearsals weekly. Practices on the weekends could be anywhere from 6-12 hours straight. Weeks right before competitions or performances were often filled with five rehearsals per week for two weeks, taking place every day after school...

...student. Hello! My name is Jessica. I am a fairly new student with the University of Phoenix and to be honest with you, I was very terrified when I was first accepted to the school because I was so afraid that I could not do it. I am a single mom who works full time. All I could think about was how am I going to be able to handle school, work, and a toddler. At times, yes it was stressful only because I did not have to right mindset or skills that I needed to be a successful student until now. The school actually prepares you for this! I learned more over the course of seven weeks than I did in an eighteen week class in high school. I recently just finished my first class with the University of Phoenix and let me tell you, it was wonderful! The first class really helps you to understand what to expect the during your time at the University. You will learn a variety of helpful tips, how to organize the work, and you even get a refresher course on some basic English skills. The first class also helps you to understand how the attendance and participation works each week. You will get a verity of reading and study techniques that you may or may not have known about that you can utilize through your student career. One on my favorite topics we review was the SMART goals which will also help you out more than you will realize at first. Another important skill that you will master is time management. You may think why do I need time management when I am doing on online class but I...

...School Bells… I started kindergarten at Spring Hill Elementary School. There my teacher’s name was Mr. Shortner. Around half way through the year I won student of the month at that school and not even three days later I switched schools to Chocachatti. My kindergarten teacher’s name there was Mrs. Noark. Everyone thought she was the best teacher ever. She didn’t like to give us homework so we used to call her Mrs. No Work. She was really nice and loved teaching the class. My mom was excited for me to go to kindergarten. She was excited because she wanted me to learn in a new environment and meet new friends and have fun new experiences. When I was in kindergarten I got in trouble for sleeping in class a few times. I would fall asleep while a teacher put on a movie or a video or when we had an easy day. Chocachatti is a performing arts school so we would do plays and musicals all the time. I remember my class was connected to another class in the hallway to get to the other class there was a little stage and seats for the audience. That was my favorite thing to do while I was in kindergarten. I would pretend that I was on stage performing a play and the audience of my friends...
