Fitness Paper

...Lifetime Fitness/Well – PEFT 101 CFW February 19, 2012 Good flexibility is extremely important in a good exercise program. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (2003, p. 10) “flexibility is the ability to bend joints and stretch muscles through a full range of motion”. During the first week of PEFT, the class performed the Sit and Reach flexibility test. This test measures the flexibility of the lower back and the hamstrings. My stretching reached 4 inches on this test, which equates to an excellent rating. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (2003) performing regular stretching exercises such as touching the toes and holding the stretch for a minimum of 10 seconds will improve flexibility. Having good flexibility will allow for less injuries and faster recoveries from strenuous work-outs. Grip strength measures overall body strength. This was also measured during the first week of class and my rating was superior with a score of 43 kgs. in my dominant hand. According to Professor Renaud, “a healthy adult should perform 1 set of 8-12 reps on 8-10 machines”. Those numbers can vary depending upon the reference. According to Incledon (2005) a healthy adult performing a moderate workout should do 3-4 sets of 8-10 reps on a variety of at least 5 machines or free weights. Muscular strength and endurance are important in everyday life because it not only makes you look better, but you simply feel better knowing you are improving and...

Physical Fitness Routine

...Physical Fitness Routine Introduction The first, and most important step in beginning to look for workout routines and eating healthier, is setting realistic short and long term goals. In order for a person to find a workout routine that works best for them, they have to consider the time they can dedicate to the routine, and most importantly, their motivation to lose weight and develop a healthier lifestyle. There are three basic levels of workouts in reference to workout routines, which are beginner, intermediate, and advanced. By choosing and sticking with a realistic and efficient physical fitness routine, you will achieve a healthier lifestyle and benefit your life in several ways. Steps The first step to obtaining a proper workout routine is to decide what exercises to utilize for which muscle group. The second step is to determine how many repetitions and sets to do for each exercise. The final step to achieve the best workout for you is to figure out how many days out of the week you are going to dedicate for the gym. In the figure 1, I have included a sample workout for my back and biceps as a guide to what a workout for those muscle groups should include, such as exercises, sets, and repetitions. Figure 1 | Muscle Group | Exercise | Sets | Repetitions | Weight | Back | Lower back extensions | 4 | 10 | 110 lbs | Back | Lateral pull downs | 4 | 10 | 90 lbs | Back | Cable rows | 4 | 10 | 75 lbs | Biceps | Hammer curls | 4 | 10 | 35 lb dumbbells...

Exercise Intervention

...activity intervention would be recognizing that the students are just beginning college. Most students enrolled in EXSS 1000 are incoming freshmen that are just moving to college and are probably not yet settled into their new lifestyle. EXSS 1000 students also probably do not have a full understanding that exercise has long-term benefits for health and is not just a method to help avoid the “freshmen-fifteen.” When designing a physical activity intervention for a client, it is always important to consider their current level of physical fitness. The students of these exercise classes will have various levels of physical fitness, but overall, everyone should be healthy enough to participate in some type of exercise program. Because we are in North Carolina, a state that has one of the highest obesity rates in the US, the students of these classes may be less fit than normal fit averages. In turn, not only do we need to look at the specific fitness levels of the students but also at the general perception of exercise that a college student would hold. The clients need to be able to see how easily they can increase their physical activity. The more apparent it is made to them that they can add physical activity into their daily routines, the more likely they are to adopt a more active lifestyle. We are all faced with unforeseen barriers that may inhibit our ability to accomplish our goals. These barriers are often new to these incoming students now that they are in a much...

Pilates

...Tel Aviv University Spring Semester Faculty for Social Sciences 2011 Department of Psychology Course: Between Psychology and Medicine Paper on: Medical and Psychological processes in Pilates Presented by: Hani Ovadia Introduction Psychological and physical health is greatly affected by behavior, similarly, different patterns of behavior derive from psychological and physical health (Folkins 1981). Consequently, both psychotherapists and doctors recommend to their patients to participate in activities that advance a healthier lifestyle (Bull 1995). The patients are advised to integrate gymnastics of different types in their lifestyle, includ ing among others: aerobics, yoga, kickboxing and Pilates (Howell 2011). Pilates is an exercise method based on gentle phy sical movements integrated with focused mind. The physical aspect is designed to tone and increase the flexib ility of the muscles and joints and also includes developing good posture, balance and coordination. The psychological aspect is based on correct breathing and mental concentration (Field 2009) In this paper I will examine the beneficiary effects of Pilates as a mind and body training method.
