PART A – Plan the project

Most athletes know that getting enough rest after exercise is essential to high-level performance, but many still over train and feel guilty when they take a day off. The body repairs and strengthens itself in the time between workouts, and continuous training can actually weaken the strongest athletes.

Rest days are critical to sports performance for a variety of reasons. Some are physiological and some are psychological. Rest is physically necessary so that the muscles can repair, rebuild and strengthen. For recreational athletes, building in rest days can help maintain a better balance between home, work and fitness goals.

The main objective of my project of this term is to build up a recovery program for athletes. That is what I am gonna try to study into the basics. Sport is not only about performance, there is a lot of other factors that influence the performance, from the psychological aspect to the physiological condition. The recovery phase and rest is one of the main subject that help to improve athlete s performance. Human is not a machine, we all need rest to restart our body again to reach the performance we want. Rest is not only behind higher performance, recovery periods prevent injuries that are caused by overtraining or a trauma.

My project is about recovery program for a specific athlete, and how it can influence his performance. I try to build up a recovery program for him, that is suitable for his possibilities and capacities.

I ve chosen Tiago Luz as my client. He is a basketball player, high level athlete though. He trains 4 / 5 times per week, in addition he has match almost every week.
The goal of my recovery program for my client is to help to repair muscles and to rebuild them after workout.
I will do with Tiago 4 weeks recovery program. First week we start with stretching where I will try to

...Lifetime Fitness/Well – PEFT 101 CFW February 19, 2012 Good flexibility is extremely important in a good exercise program. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (2003, p. 10) “flexibility is the ability to bend joints and stretch muscles through a full range of motion”. During the first week of PEFT, the class performed the Sit and Reach flexibility test. This test measures the flexibility of the lower back and the hamstrings. My stretching reached 4 inches on this test, which equates to an excellent rating. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (2003) performing regular stretching exercises such as touching the toes and holding the stretch for a minimum of 10 seconds will improve flexibility. Having good flexibility will allow for less injuries and faster recoveries from strenuous work-outs. Grip strength measures overall body strength. This was also measured during the first week of class and my rating was superior with a score of 43 kgs. in my dominant hand. According to Professor Renaud, “a healthy adult should perform 1 set of 8-12 reps on 8-10 machines”. Those numbers can vary depending upon the reference.
