...understanding of campus diversity President Abbe released a comprehensive University evaluation. This included student surveys asking about both demographics and self-reported student involvement. The evaluation also included a comprehensive break down of both student and faculty ethnicities, religions, and an option inclusion of sexual orientation. President Abbe and her newly appointed support staff complied the data, then compared it to other in state and out of state universities. The comparisons were alarming, showing that ATU was greatly lacking in the representation of diverse students and diverse faculty members. This caused President Abbe to take it a step further, to comprehensively break down the demographics of overall applicants over the course of the past five years. This data showed that ATU was also very low in overall diversity of applicants, targeted outreach, and recruitment. President Abbe recognized the issue with this data, due to the fact that she identified the importance diversity plays in overall education. Due to this, President Abbe decided she needed to act. She created a team of advisors, and they created a tentative five-year plan to increase overall diversity of ATU along with stressing the importance of community outreach and involvement. She had not yet attended college, so she was thrilled when she received an acceptance letter from an undergraduate graphic arts program in New York City. But her excitement gave way to anxiety during the first days and weeks at her new school. Fretting about her performance, Diana sought out her professors for comfort and advice. She found them aloof and difficult to contact, however, because none of them posted office hours. When Diana reached out to the chair of the art department, he either was unavailable or expressed little interest in her concerns. Diana's academic fears were unfounded--her first semester grades turned out to be quite good. But lacking contact and support from her teachers, Diana felt lonely, dejected and lost in the crowd. Hammond Coastal Carolina University Abstract The study was designed to examine the effect that hair length has on the acceptance of a homosexual male. The hypothesis stated that the homosexual male with the short hair would be more accepted than the homosexual male with long hair. Males were hypothesized to be more accepting of the homosexual with short hair; and females were hypothesized to be more accepting overall. Undergraduates (n=52, 35 females and 17 males) participated in this study by completing a questionnaire designed by the researcher to determine how likeable, respectable, and sociable the candidate was. Participants also completed the Homosexuality Attitude Scale. Data analysis from this study yielded significant results. Using a 2 X2 ANOVA, results concluded that women were more accepting overall in both conditions, when compared with males. Results also concluded that male participants were more accepting of the short hair male versus the homosexual male with long hair. A correlation between the likeable questionnaire and the Homosexual Attitude Scale was also conducted. Results yielded a negative correlation between assessments. Applications of the findings and future research suggestions are discussed. ...Introduction An ‘at-risk’ student is a young person at risk, or educationally disadvantaged, if they have been exposed to inadequate or inappropriate educational experiences in the family, school, or community. Many of these students are located in large, mainly urban high schools around the country (Balfanz, 2007). Urban high schools face five common problems: low student engagement, poor prior preparation, low ninth-grade promotion rate, low graduations rates, and isolation from the community (Herlihy & Kemple, 2004). When at-risk students are exposed to such environment everyday, they have a greater probability of dropping out of school (Princiotta & Ryan, 2009) Nationally, 1.3 million members of the public high school class of 2009 failed to graduate with a diploma with the majority of that population being African American, Latino, and Native American (Princiotta & Ryan, 2009). The majority of these populations attend schools in urban high schools in majority cities (Balfanz, 2007). Many schools do not have a system that identifies students who are at-risk of dropping out school, so these students are ignored.
