...Carlson Gerelus Professor Patel In to Sociology Film Analysis Media Influence We’ve likely to grown up thinking that the main stream media was our friend, the middle man that is always there when we need it. Faithfully provides us with information that is of common sense and natural judge for everything that matters. They’ve told what to eat, what to drink, how to eat, how to drink, what wear to, and what the standards of beauty should be and look like. The content that’s important, and a reliable guide to existence. As we’ve gotten older we have come to realize that this isn’t quite true as we would want it to be. For that we have to go in depth with what is wrong with the main stream media. From time to time, the greatest messages have been propagandized through the usage of movies and drama over the asphyxiation of motive and emotional sequences, disregarding any logical or factual sequences, thus having media outlets pushing emotional content to its viewers, distorting fantasy from reality. This content is necessary in the eyes of the distributor that is trying to get its consumers to do something or believe in the same ideology as the distributor would want them to believe in. Rather than go through a discussion or debate using logic and facts. Let’s take Fox News for example, a right wing news outlet that specializes in taking tender topics to the extremes to get its viewers hooked on its coverage for consumption, allowing one side of an argument to be seen but...

...McCarthyism and The Second Red Scares impact on Media in the 1950-60s decades (Research and Analysis Paper) In 1950, fewer than 50,000 Americans out of a total US population of 150 million were members of the Communist Party(Gilder Lehrman). However following WWII the the time period of the 1950-1970 was marked as a period of mass fear of Communism. American fears of internal communist infiltration reached Its highest point since the First Red Scare of the 1920-30s. Government organizations investigated millions of americans, “asking what books and magazines they read, what unions and civic organizations they belonged to, and whether they went to church” (Gilder Lehrman). This time period was also marked by the major shift and blacklisting of celebrities primarily in show business. One of the people who took full advantage of the mass hysteria was Senator Joseph McCarthy from Wisconsin. McCarthy began his crusade by giving a speech at the Women’s Republican Club of Wheeling, in West Virginia, where he stated that he had a list of over 220 confirmed communists living in the US. The numbers of this statement dropped over the years as people began to watch him more closely. However this didn’t stop him from rising to more power, after the Republicans regained a majority in the senate, McCarthy took control of a subcommittee, and performed investigations on government agencies. Other Cold War “activists” consisted of Minnesota Senator Hubert Humphrey, union leader Walter Reuther...

...Thinking for Themselves – Anthony D’Amelio Q8 The intellectual virtue of bravery can be defined as having the ability to think for yourself and not conform to the herd’s average way of thinking. This bravery allows a person to confront ideas and beliefs that are considered to be taboo or dangerous. Having intellectual bravery enables us to determine things for ourselves, and not just accept what we have been told. The consequences for straying beyond society’s accepted viewpoints and beliefs can be very severe. Professor Timothy Leary is a person who in the 1960’s displayed intellectual bravery while telling the rest of the world to “think for yourself, and question authority”(How to Operate Your Brain). President Nixon even called him “the most dangerous man in America”. Timothy Leary is largely famous for his sacramental use of LSD. However, Leary would first conduct experiments at Harvard University[->0] under the Harvard Psilocybin Project[->1] before being fired because of the controversy surrounding his research. Despite the negative reaction by mainstream America, Leary continued to pursue his research and experimentation with psycho- active compounds, writing several books including Exo-Psychology in 1977. Leary says “Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political...

...JOAN OF ARC | Joan of Arc has been a Roman Catholic figure analysed and studied for hundreds of years. Her short life is discussed in numerous religious and political texts not only because of her involvement and guidance of the French troops in the Hundred Years’ War but because of the spiritual guidance to lead the troops that she claimed to receive in her visions. Whether Joan is considered a hero, a saint or a visionary woman, her life continues to be of controversy among scholars who still immortalize her with their studies. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the various perceptions that attempt to portray Joan of Arc as a venerated and outstanding figure. Part of the analysis will focus on her role as an inspirational woman, the iconography and symbols and the role within religion and political involvement that Joan of Arc continues to influence. Her life and death According to Kevin J. Harty’s article “Joan of Arc’s life may well be the most-documented of anyone who lived before the twentieth-century but as Professor Heimann’s ground-breaking and fascinating study suggests there is still much to be learned about the Maid of Orléans” (Harty 104). Her very short life (1412-31) had a series of events that would be remembered for hundreds of years to follow. At the age of 12, she started seeing visions of saints who would guide her way leading the French troops to end the siege of Orléans. Her visions can be contrasted with the annunciation experienced by the...

...INDUSTRY ANALYSIS OF AMUSEMENT PARKS HAN CHOE BRIAN CHEN MARCY LEON RUBEN BUGARIN J.D. PERALTA INTRODUCTION The history of theme parks stems from European pleasure gardens in the 16th century. Pleasure gardens were a place of recreation where the guests could also enjoy beautiful landscapes. These types of venues led to expositions and fairs in the United States. These large venues then paved the way to amusement parks, which then led to the creation of a different type of amusement park called a theme park. Theme parks are in fact amusement parks that are built and designed to portray specific themes or stories. The first of its kind was Santa Claus Land in Indiana, which is now known as Holiday World. However, it was the Walt Disney Company that utilized the theme park idea and made it popular. Today, the words amusement parks and theme parks are used synonymously. Theme parks provide attractions to their guests. These attractions are roller coasters, water rides, live shows, carnival type games, arcades, and merchandise stores. Dining is also provided to guests and come in the form of push carts, providing fast food, to seated indoor restaurants. Some theme parks offer tours as well as a resort to accommodate overnight guests. Large theme parks can also provide shoppertainment centers outside of their park walls. These shoppertainment centers are available for non park attendees as well. Shoppertainment centers offer retail stores, restaurants, and movie...

...for nine consecutive periods by Forsee/FGI Research (Netflix, 2009). Netflix’s strategy for success has included providing a comprehensive selection of movies; an easy way to choose movies, fast delivery, a no late fees policy and a convenient drop it in the mail return system. These strategies ensured a competitive advantage to Netflix and threatened to make the traditional video store obsolete. A combination of its business model and strategic approach carry out the mission of the company. Diagnosis of Strategic Issues Netflix’s main competitor, Blockbuster, was losing the battle until 2007, when a resurgent Blockbuster started to take over market share and forced Netflix to reduce subscription prices. This reaction raised a red flag and caused a drop in Netflix’s stock price. In addition to Blockbuster, other competitors are increasing their presence in the market (Redbox) and new...

Culture and contemporary issues 9. Managerial guidelines for crosscultural success > American Football . . . in Europe? There are few things more representative of U.S. culture than American football. It is an extravaganza, complete with exciting halftime shows and peppy cheerleaders. The game exemplifies national pride. The national anthem is played, flags are unfurled, and uniformed players charge up and down the field like an army in the throes of often violent conflict. The teams’ huddles divide the game into small planning sessions for the next play. In the United States, the National Football League (NFL) oversees the sport and, like any successful business, wants to score in new markets. The NFL first tackled Europe in 1991, with plans to establish American football there. After years of failed attempts, NFL Europe emerged as six teams, five of which were based in Germany (such as the Berlin Thunder, the Cologne Centurions, and the Hamburg Sea Devils). Earlier teams established in Spain had failed. Why did American football triumph in Germany but fail in Spain? An excellent metaphor for...
