Discuss at least three (3) specific elements of the Flavian Amphitheater. What architectural elements were used, how was the building designed for large crowds, what was the building used for, what are the dimensions, why is it called an arena, etc.?

The Flavian Amphitheater, more commonly known as the Colosseum, is a splendid example of architecture from the early first century. The structure was composed of four visible levels each of a different order although there were more levels on the interior. The first level was the sturdiest and built in the Tuscan order with barrel and groin vaults. The floor area of the amphitheater was covered in sand. Arena is Latin for sand and thus it is called an arena which is a term we still use for stadiums and similar structures, although we no longer cover the floor with sand. The second level is of the Ionic order again with barrel and groin vaults and the third and fourth levels of the Corinthian order which is the most ornate. The size of the Flavian Amphitheater is immense and it has an elliptical shape. It is estimated that during performances it could hold over 50,000 spectators (Text 186) and seating depended on one’s social status, with more prominent people getting to sit closer to the action and lessor people sitting in the uppermost seats. Perhaps the most renowned performances that could be watched in the Amphitheater were gladiator fights. These grisly battles were either hand-to-hand combat or gladiator against animal.

First Mariner Arena

...We Americans today have taken a lot from the Romans, but the main thing that we have gotten from them is their structure of the buildings used for entertainment. They used coliseums for the use of amusing the town people. They would hold gladiator shows, or fights till the death as well as chariot races and killing fugitives for the use of others amusement. Another thing that they used the buildings for where; dinner theater shows for the upper class and emperors and empresses. The structure of these buildings where really important because they had to hold a lot of people due to the fact of that was usually the only means of entertainment. The building that I chose that I feel as though portrayed this is the first mariner arena. The first mariner arena is built as if it was a coliseum but in particular the pantheon; and it is used to host plays as well as the circus and other forms of entertainment in Baltimore. Although it does use arches the inside of the building uses the same structure which is kind the bowl shape. I feel as though they use this shape to fit as many people inside as possible. Another thing that I have noticed the structure for the hallways or tunnels used for the entertainment to enter in has not changed much either. Also whoever the entertainment is for that particular event is usually put in the center of the arena or coliseum so that everyone can see even if you are sitting up high. So in conclusion a lot of our buildings used for entertainment where derived...

...long time and not treated as a well thought-of citizen, but they were higher up than slaves. One thing that was historically correct in both the movie and in history was that Lucilla had a son with Pomeianus. His name was Arelius Commodus Pomeianus. Commodus was a gladiator in both the movie, and in history. A gladiator was a guilty criminal, a prisoner of war, or a slave bought to fight in the gladiatorial games by an owner. The professional gladiators were volunteered men from Rome or a free man in general. In Rome, these games were fought for entertainment of the people. The games evolved into a symbol of Roman culture and stayed as a key part of the culture for the next seven centuries. These gruesome games were fought in a Roman amphitheatre where thousands of people could sit and watch the games take place. Also, there was...

Roman Theatre

...completely enclosed on all sides. Roman theatres derive their basic design from the Theatre of Pompey, the first permanent Roman theatre. Roman theatres were built in all areas of the empire from medieval-day Spain, to the Middle East. Because of the Romans' ability to influence local architecture, we see numerous theatres around the world with uniquely Roman attributes.[1] There exist similarities between the theatres and amphitheatres of ancient Rome/Italy. They were constructed out of the same material, Roman concrete, and provided a place for the public to go and see numerous events throughout the Empire. However, they are two entirely different structures, with specific layouts that lend to the different events they held. Amphitheatres did not need superior acoustics, unlike those provided by the structure of a Roman theatre. While amphitheatres would feature races and gladiatorial events, theatres hosted events such as plays, pantomimes, choral events, and orations. Their design, with its semicircular form, enhances the natural acoustics, unlike Roman amphitheatres constructed in the round.[1] These buildings were semi-circular and possessed certain inherent architectural structures, with minor differences depending on the region in which they were constructed. The scaenae frons was a high back wall of the stage floor, supported by columns. The proscaenium was a wall that supported the front edge of the stage...

Roman Colosseum Research Paper

...When people think of the Roman Colosseum, they often think about the huge stone stadium structure and gladiator fights. While this is true, the Colosseum was much more than this. The Colosseum is not only an ancient structure, but also a symbol representing the power of the Roman Empire. This structure, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, entered construction in 72 CE in the reign of Vespasian. This building, which was built on a site that was once the lake and gardens of Emperor Nero’s Golden House, was part of a larger construction project by Emperor Vespasian in order to return Rome to its glory that it was before the recent civil war. The Colosseum was completed and first opened for business in the year 80 CE under the reign of Vespasian’s...

Art History: The Colosseum

...Choose a Roman monument or public building and explain its political function to support and maintain the empire by either propaganda or by keeping citizens entertained and feeling they had a stake in the system. Describe the features of the building that served this purpose. The ancient Flavian Amphitheater, or Colosseum, was constructed at the time as a huge political move. It was intended for providing the plebeians with entertaining sport battles so that the ruling government could keep the people satisfied, in control, and most importantly distracted from more dire situations of the time relating to nepotism, oligarchy, and malfeasance within the church and government. I guess some things really do not change. The people of Rome watched very bloody athletic events which included gladiator fights to the death, or with wild animals, and circus-like performances. Marilyn Stokstad and Michael W. Cothren stated in their book, Art History: Ancient Art Edition 5, that, “The Colosseum floor was laid over a foundation of service rooms and tunnels that provided an area...

Brauron Buildings

...D. Buildings of Brauron The Stoa The stoa is the largest building that has been excavated at Brauron. Combining architectural evidence and an inscription uncovered inside the stoa, archaeologists estimate that the stoa was constructed around 420 BCE, making it the oldest stoa in Ancient Greece (Sakoulas). It is ninety-six feet in length and the foundation forms three different sides in a Π shape, with the east side extending the farthest (Perseus). Only the north side is believed to have actually been finished, while the east and west sides are simply foundations. The stylobate, capitals, and metopes of the north colonnade were formed from marble while the rest of the stoa was made of sandstone (Clark). The north colonnade was able to be rebuilt using original materials in 1961-62 by Charalambos Bouras and can now be used to imagine what a completed temple would have looked like (Leonard). The stoa consisted of eleven columns, each standing twelve feet tall (Clark). The columns were of the Doric order, the simplest order of columns. The capital is simply a circle and the frieze features triglyphs in between metopes. Although the columns are simple, they have a powerful and imposing feel about them, making an impression on those who visit. The stoa at Brauron is unusual in several ways compared to the typical architecture of the fifth century BCE. The columns are notably taller in relation to the circumference of the base for the time. Another unique quality of this...

The first time Diego visited the Colosseum is when he was 11 years old, and now, after 50 years, he came back as a CEO of the luxury leather goods company named Tod’s. He looks like a normal tourist, but people do not know that he is the one who puts 25 million euros of his company’s money to sponsor a full restoration of the monument. The Colosseum is constructed by Flavian Emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and it is introduced the first time by his son Titus in AD 80. After time, the monument has been stained, eroded by pollution, and readies to fall apart. Many precious antique things were stolen by robbers and damaged by natural catastrophe. However, thanks to the Diego’s fund, the Colosseum is gradually healing now. According to the article, although the Colesseum earned 28.8 million euros in ticket sales in 2012, it only received 2 million euros for its operating costs because of the lack of money for other monuments. Therefore, under the low budget used for restoration, Rome’s mayor has to solicit private funding to lure money from corporations, and Tod’s is one of the two companies which win the auction to restore the Colosseum. However, it leads to a huge national controversy...

Coloseum

...------------------------------------------------- Colosseum The Colosseum or Coliseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium; Italian: Anfiteatro Flavio orColosseo) is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of concrete and stone,[1] it was the largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire, and is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. It is the largest amphitheatre in the world.[2] The Colosseum is situated just east of the Roman Forum. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian in 70 AD,[3] and was completed in 80 AD under his successor and heir Titus.[4] Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (81–96).[5]These three emperors are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheatre was named in Latin for its association with their family name (Flavius). The Colosseum could hold, it is estimated, between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators,[6][7] and was used for gladiatorial contests andpublic spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based onClassical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine. Although in the 21st century it stays partially ruined because of damage caused by devastating earthquakes and stone-robbers...

...for many women: puttinHistory is the discovery, collection, organization, analysis and presentation of information about past events. History can also mean a continuous, typically chronological, record of important or public events or of a particular trend or institution. Scholars who write about history are called historians. It is a field of knowledge which uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of events, and it sometimes attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Historians debate the nature of history and its usefulness. This includes discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing "perspective" on the problems of the present. The stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the legends surrounding King Arthur) are usually classified as cultural heritage rather than the "disinterested investigation" needed by the discipline of history. Events of the past prior to written record are considered prehistory. Amongst scholars, the fifth century BC Greek historian Herodotus is considered to be the "father of history", and, along with his contemporary Thucydides, forms the foundations for the modern study of history. Their influence, along with other historical traditions in other parts of their world, have spawned many different interpretations of the nature of history which has evolved over the centuries and are continuing to change....

Architecture in Rome

...Architecture in Rome Ancient Roman architecture took certain architectural aspects from different areas to create a unique and highly admired form of architecture. However, they were not able to do this overnight. In fact, for the first few centuries after it was founded, the people of Rome resided in very basic huts with no outstanding architectural merit. According to oxford dictionary a hut is “a dwelling of ruder and meaner construction and (usually) smaller than a house.” It was under the rule of the Etruscans that they developed more complex structures that served specific purposes, such as a temple dedicated to a god. The Etruscans themselves borrowed many aspects of their architectural designs from Ancient Greece and expanded upon it. One may notice that the time that Rome began its first step into architectural greatness was around 509 BC, when it became Republican Rome. “With the expulsion of the Etruscan kings Rome was free to shape her own destinies” (Sear 14). Since Rome was finally free from the constraints of its conquerors it now had the liberty to create whatever they wished in whatever manner they preferred. Though evidence of Greek influence could still be found, Rome began to develop a style of their own; however, once Rome conquered nations across the Mediterranean Sea it incorporated many of the building designs which were reflected in the buildings of their capital. Imperial Rome is seen as both the lowest and highest point in Rome’s history. During...
