It’s almost impossible to imagine a perfect world. No war, poverty, or hunger. Constant equality and nobody is left out. But, like all things, perfection comes at a cost. In The Giver, this price is you no longer have freedom and must obey all rules or suffer death. Your family will be chosen for you, your differences frowned upon. On top of all this, the pain of the world would never truly go away. It would simply be placed in the hands of a young individual chosen to suffer. Doesn’t sound so perfect anymore, does it? Family consists of a mother and father, as well as “two children- one male, one female- to each family unit. It was written in the rules.” -Giver 11. All the pain, suffering, love, happiness, and tears that the world has ever experienced are given to him. The reason for this is so the community can reach out to him when they need wisdom. As the Receiver receives such a large quantity of feelings, this can be a burden. However, in smaller quantities, this can be a blessing- the ability to feel. The Giver emphasises this point when he describing the job of the Receiver. “‘It’s just that… without the memories it’s all meaningless. They gave that burden to me.”’- Giver 133. Without feeling, everything we know and worked so hard for wouldn't even matter. There would be no love or passion in what we knew. War going on in front of us would conjure up nothing but selfishness and fear, we would feel no loss or longing. The birth of a new child would not be something to celebrate or enjoy, and the death of one would mean nothing. Everything would just be fact and nothing would matter.
