Flipper Purify in the movie Jungle Fever is a successful African American man from Harlem. His job consists of being an architect and he’s also married to a mixed-race wife name Drew. Together with Drew and Flipper have one daughter named Ming who is around the age of 6 or 7. Flipper lives in the period of time of the 1990s where tension between races was at an all-time high. The 1990s is arguably the most tumultuous, controversial, and racially charged decade since the 1960s. People of many different cultures and backgrounds didn’t really socialize with each other they just mostly stayed with individuals with the same ethnicity as them. They started to bash on all black men saying that they’re never loyal to black women, and how once they make it big in the world they want to be with all these white women. They later stated that if a black man was to get with a black woman she would have to be light skinned because being too dark is a bad thing. Drew however said that being light skinned or mixed isn’t always a good thing because when she was young she would get picked on for being half white and half black. Most children that are mixed with two different races relate to this issue. Either they can’t truly identify with one of their cultures or they are cast away from both cultures because they’re not like the others. These kinds of issues usually being at a young age when kids pick on others that look differently from them calling them racial slurs and making fun of their language. Like a mix, Asian and Caucasian child would get taunted by kids who would yell “Ching, Chang, Chong, Chinese.” Once the child turns into an adult they don’t feel like they can relate to any of their cultures.
Flipper act upon lust got him into whole world of trouble that he didn’t know was going to happen. His mistress Angie was also thrown into a world of trouble because her family and friends found out she was having a sexual relationship with a black man.
