At the beginning of the movie “Spanglish”, the audiences were presented how Flor and Cristina, a single mother and her young daughter, had illegally immigrated to the United States of America. Moving into the United States has been a big challenge to many Latin Americans; they have to adapt and learn how to live and fit into the new environment. Flor Moreno made no exception; adapting to a different lifestyle in a foreign place was a hard task for Flor. However, she never gave up; she tried her best to adapt to the lifestyle and made several difficult sacrifices for her beloved- Cristina. Flor was a mentally strong woman that had her own rigid beliefs and values. Moving into the Untied States was challenging for Flor. First of all, she did not know how to speak English. Second, unlike her daughter Cristina, who fitted in the American Culture really well, Flor had different cultural beliefs and values that strongly contrasted against the Claskys, which was the family she worked for. Deborah, the mother of Bernice and George, was a perfect foil for Flor. The way Deborah educated her kids was totally unacceptable to Flor. For example, Flor would give heavy rewards to her kids after they have done something that she thought was right. Flor definitely disagreed with this way of education. When Deborah gave Cristina an opportunity to go to a private school, Flor was horrified. Flor was afraid that if she lets Cristina go to the private school Cristina would lose her identity; she was afraid that Cristina would see this opportunity as something she deserved. Despite all the worries, Flor still let Cristina had the education since it was such a great opportunity that she would not want to lose.
