...Energy Flow Energy Flow Holly Regan SCI/275 August 10, 2014 Stacy Murphy Energy Flow The position of an organism in a food chain is called its trophic level. Producers are on the first trophic level because they are the self-producers. Producers are organisms like grass, plankton, and plants. Herbivores are on the second level, which are considered the first-order consumers. The first-order consumers eat the grass, plants, or plankton, and these consumers are mainly insects, small animals or small fish. Carnivores are on the third level, which is considered the second-order consumer. The second order consumer feeds on the producers and first-order consumers. When comparing pyramids (a) and (b) what is meant by " ...more food is available to those societies that eat lower on the food chain" is that by eating primarily vegetarian diet ten people can consume the recommended daily caloric intake of 2,000. By adding another trophic level involving a cow as the herbivore instead of ten people, they can only feed one person. The benefits of eating lower on the food chain is something I already do, while meat is rarely part of my daily caloric intake to eating much healthier, I do still eat meat once in a while. The carbon cycle goes through a two-step process involving photosynthesis and respiration. Green plants undergo both photosynthesis and respiration. Fungi and animal life only respire. Carbon is "cycled" from green plants to the atmosphere and back to the plant...

...Excerpt: “I can see you have a great deal of water in your personality. Water never waits. It changes shape and flows around things, and finds the secret paths no one else has thought about - the tiny hole through the roof or the bottom of the box. There's no doubt it's the most versatile of the five elements. It can wash away earth; it can put out fire; it can wear a piece of metal down and sweep it away. Even wood, which is its natural complement, can't survive without being nurtured by water. And yet, you haven't drawn on those strengths in living your life, have you?” (Golden, 125) What Separates Sayuri for the Other Geishas During the Shōwa period, Geishas were high-class entertainers that sometimes sold their bodies for money. They strived on perfecting their artistic attributes rather then prostituting their bodies for money. In the novel Memoirs of a Geisha, Arthur Golden writes primarily about the life of a nine-year-old girl named Chiyo and her path to becoming a geisha. Golden uses Chiyo’s origins, eye color (destiny) and determination to contrast her with other geishas. However, he does not just narrate her life from another’s perspective. He gives Chiyo herself the role of telling her own story. As Golden introduces Chiyo’s memoir, he exaggerates the hardships in little Chiyo’s life. Coming from a poor fishing village (called Yoroido), she is sold off to a geisha house, separated from her sister, who she finds and tries to escape with (which failed). Later on...

...ABSTRACT Water pollution poses great threat to human health. Because of this, natural filters are recommended for use. This study evaluated the potential of corn cobs as an alternative filter material in the removal of impurities in water by measuring the flow rate, pH level and the color of the filtered sample. The corn cobs were grinded and activated using water and vinegar with the ratio of 1:3 and served as the alternative filter material. The activated carbon were placed in a transparent tube at varying thickness and served as treatments T1 (0.5 inch), T2 (0.75 inch), T3 (1 inch), and T4 (control). Results showed that T1 has the fastest flow rate, T3 has the highest pH level and lightest color. Statistical analysis showed that there is a significant difference on the flow rate among the four samples. The pH level among T1, T2 and T4 are not significantly different with each other but significantly different with T3. These lead to conclusion that the flow rate increases as the thickness of the filter material decreases. On the other hand, the pH level and the lightness value increases as the thickness of the filter increases Key words: corn cobs, activated carbon, filter, flow rate, pH level ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The researchers would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the following: Mrs. Felerma G. Urbano, their research adviser, for the patience, moral support and encouragement she gave to keep moving even if the work was hard. Sir. Edgar Flores...

...Tides The Earth’s waters move back and forth every-day, causing currents and tides. Tides are the daily or twice daily rise and fall of the oceans. Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun on the ocean. The rise and fall of tides causes water to move in and out of estuaries, bays and harbors. This movement is called a tidal current. When the tide is rising, water flows from the ocean into the bay creating a flood current. When the tide falls, water flows from the bay back into the ocean creating an ebb current. The highest tides, called spring tides, are formed when the earth, sun and moon are lined up in a row. This happens every two weeks during a new moon or full moon. Smaller tides, called neap tides, are formed when the earth, sun and moon form a right angle. This causes the sun and moon to pull the water in two different directions. Neap tides happen during a quarter or three-quarter moon. I once went fishing with my dad at the beach and the tides were really low. We had to wait until the next morning to get a nice high tide to be able to catch any fish. The low tide waves were so far away that the fishing line barely went out. This is my personal connection because tides make a big impact on people who love to fish. Normally, fish like to be away from shore so if the tide is low, there wouldn’t be any fishes. My life does not depend on tides, however; but the fishes...

Dimitar Chukaliev Exercise 2 You are doing requirements engineering for a dishwasher. The main goal expressed by the users is that the water should not be leaking from the dishwasher. The valve that enables the flow of water in the dishwasher can only be open if the door is closed and a washing program is selected. A possible (drastic) solution to avoid water leakage is to forbid opening the door after the valve has been open, until the washing program terminates and the valve is closed. Can you identify in this description the system requirements, the software requirements, and...

My special tail and webbed hind feet act like a rudder and fins to help me swim, and my soft, glossy brown fur is waterproof so I never get chilly, even in really cold water. ...relaxation. Walking through the garage I crack the fridge to grab a cold beer. Mr. Samuel Adams is the only supplement that will get me through the bombarding of conversation that is about to ensue. Just as I walk through the door a deep breath is taken. Finally I am ready for the various conversations my family will attempt to extract out of me, just as a dentist pulls teeth. Every day I experience difference’s in language between men and women. Conversations between each parental figure differ and provide concrete evidence about gender communication. As John Piece once stated “Communication is not only the essence of being human, but also a vital property of life.” As vital as water is to life, language flows in all different direction depending on its source. Humans use language to create a flow of conversation between each other in order to sustain relationships. Deborah Tannen writes there is a noteworthy variance between how men and women communicate. Rapport-talk is using language as a way of establishing connections and relationships with others (62). Since women are trying to establish relationships, they tend to speak more privately. Interacting with my mother at home provides an exact replica of how women chat at home. Walking through the door I am instantly greeted with a “how was your day?” Who will drop the whole kit and caboodle she’s doing at the moment. Evolving a football linebacker’s stance I prepare for a flurry of questions. One question after the other...

...Water Conservation Nature is great. It meets most of our needs without which life is impossible. All of our needs that are made available to us by nature are called Natural Resources. The most important requirements that are needed to sustain life on this planet include Air, Water, Food, Energy and Shelter. Water is an integral part of land/soil productivity base. It covers about 70% of the earth’s surface. The water is made available to us by rain and snow. The demand for water is increasing every year due to tremendous increase or rise in population and due to greater expansion of industries. The agricultural has also expanded and more water is needed for irrigation purposes. A huge amount of water is wasted by way of floods. This is mainly due to destruction of forests in our hills. This has rendered the hill slope bare so that water flows down unchecked. Lot of water is wasted in the atomic reactors and other cooling devices. This wastage and greater use of water will create water scarcity or may even lead to water famine. To safe guard from such a situation conservation of water is essential. A few steps for conservation for water are suggested below. 1. Checking Deforestation: - The first and the foremost attention should be directed towards checking deforestation. The felling of trees on the hills should be stopped rather banned. This will also help in checking soil erosion and soil permeability. The felling will not impair soil permeability but, on the contrary...

...reflective account of the role of the practitioner in caring for children. The role of the practitioner in caring for children is to meet their care needs. These are: Food and Water The role of the practitioner when meeting children’s needs for food and water is to make sure that children always have access to water when they are thirsty. They could do this by providing a water cooler or getting the children to bring in a bottle. Another way the practitioners can meet their needs is to provide smaller meals with snacks in between. This is because children can’t hold as much food therefore needs to eat more often. When giving children meals or snacks in nursery’s, practitioners need to make sure they are aware of any dietary requirements the children may have, i.e. allergies, vegetarian, religious/ cultural. Practitioners also need to be aware of the child’s stage of development and make sure they know if the child needs help with feeding or need food cut up etc. it is important to provide food and water because it will help children concentrate better and learn more. It will also protect them from illness if they have the right diet. Fresh air and exercise The role of the practitioner when meeting children’s need for fresh air and exercise is that, where possible children have free flow access to outside in all weathers. If children are given the opportunities to go out in all weathers practitioners should provide them with the appropriate clothing like wellington boots...

...lifetime of showers moistens the soul’, says an ancient proverb. And the shimmering, crystal-clear nuances of these beautiful words apply more to India’s colourful Monsoon culture than to any other art movement in the world. Rain and the magical season of Monsoon have always been the throbbing heart of Indian life and culture. Whether we are talking about music – classical, folk as well as devotional – dance, painting or sculpture, rains and their incessant music are a recurring theme in India’s many-splendoured art treasure, and not without excellent reason! It is well-known that India’s entire economy depends upon the timely coming of the Monsoons. Vignettes of farmers looking longingly at the skies for the first signs of fleecy black water-bearing clouds are familiar in our daily life. Folk songs welcoming the first thunder showers and streaks of lightning are sung in every village even today. The diverse dialects of India’s far flung villages are replete with songs welcoming the rains and their message of bounty. Indeed, the ancient Vedic culture of India believed in the propitiation of the rain gods to bring life to the parched plains of India where the Aryans settled in the pre-historic age. The Parjanya Sukta and the Aap Sukta of the Rigveda and the Varuna Sukta of the Yajurveda were sung in scientifically worked out metres and recited with specific musical notes to initiate the onset of rains each year before the season...

...These monikers have become commonplace in mainline Christianity today, but Augustine established the framework for them centuries ago in the Confessions. In Augustine's mind, the greatest gift of all is love, and this is how he justifies using both names for the Holy Spirit. Indeed, in the Confessions, Augustine only refers to the Spirit as love, and, the result of the outworking of this gift is the transformation of people's hearts. In addition, as Levering notes, the Spirit imparts these gifts variously among men in order to demonstrate his presence. Because he "opened up the floodgates of his gifts," the Spirit allows the believer to understand all good...

...eco-friendly practices. Tobias McIvey, the first generation character, was a simple man with integrity who had used the land and it environment to sustain his family. Taking his family from Georgia to Florida he encountered many hardships to survive and keep his family safe. With the help of the Indians he learned how to use the land and its inhabitants to make a better life. This is the reflection not only of a change in the land but also a change in the man. Corralling wild cows and fattening them up to sell was the real beginning of development. It is the author’s way of depicting how the environment truly defines who we are. Zech McIvey, Tobias’s son, having grown up through all the experiences of learning to sustain his family, developed a love of the land. Living and exploring the wilderness, his only exposure was to the natural environment, which created his special bond with the animals and the land. As he grew older and went with his father on the cattle drives, he started to acquire tracts of undeveloped land. It almost gave the effect of a painter buying paint and a blank canvas. It seems that even though he might have had a vision of owning large amounts of land, he might not have been aware of the future implications of his actions. In developing the land, what happens to the vegetation and the animal was not part of his thought process. The author depicted this character as the facilitator of...
