Whether depicted in Japanese Horror, Japanese Noodle Western, or Asian American Musicals, the importance of complex characterization with regard to the main female protagonist figure is vital to a successful plot development. In various genres relating to Asian film, particularly the ones mentioned above, the female figure is portrayed as somewhat of a troubled or helpless woman who is in need of rescue and assistance from a male counterpart. The larger theme of finding a strong sense of self-identity while battling internal conflicts, as well as the fears and anxieties that arise within Japanese culture, are universal elements of characterization and mise-en-scene directly portrayed in various types of Chinese and Japanese films. Further, …show more content…
The film begins with Chinese immigrant Mei Li and her father arriving by cargo ship to San Francisco to meet her fiancé, wealthy nightclub owner Sammy Fong, in an arranged marriage. At one point in the film, Mei Li explains how she had to immigrate to the United States quickly in order to find a husband and get married before becoming too old. This submissive, anxious, and somewhat helpless mentality of being dependent on a male is a common theme illustrated in various Asian films, as noted above with regard to both Tampopo and Dark Water. In Flower Drum Song, Mei Li dedicates her entire self worth and validation to the man her father chooses as her husband, which is one explanation for her comment regarding her desire to get married quickly. Although the final scenes of the musical end with a double marriage between the men and women not assigned for them through arranged marriage but rather the ones chosen in a more modern sense, Mei Li’s journey of attempting to turn away from cultural anxieties and finding a sense of guidance from a male counterpart was at the heart of this film. As cultural anxiety and fear is a common element of mise-en-scene and plot development within Japanese and Asian films, this mentality transfers over to Asian American musicals, particularly illustrated through the characterization of Mei Li in Flower Drum

Holy Festival

...Nepal and other places with Hindu population. In recent times, this festival has also gained acceptance among Non-Hindus as a spring festival of love and colors. It is celebrated on the first day of Chaitra. It makes the beginning of the spring season. The beauty of nature makes this festival colorful. The lovely flowers with their dazzling colors and the sweet songs of the cuckoo provide a charming background to Holi. Celebration of Holi The Holi celebrations begin on the last day of Phalgun. People collect sticks and straws lying in streets at a place. At night they gather at that place and set fire to the huge pile of sticks and straws. They sing songs to the accompaniment of drums. They are mad with joy. They break up when the fire fades out. The main celebration follows the next day. People are in a happy mood. They sprinkle colored water on another. They smear their faces with colored powders. Children spray colored water on the passes-by. Even the old people are mad with joy. All people are in a jolly mood. They forget social distinctions. They mix with all freely. In our villages people move about with colored water. They sing, dance, and jump about. They beat drums and sing loudly in a chorus. In the evening they visit their friends and neighbors. After playing holi, many people get together again in the evening to celebrate the occasion with delicious food and desserts. Some people also wear new clothes on this occasion. Its Importance Holi is an important festival of the...

...Biography of Walt Whitman Walter "Walt" was an American poet, essayist and journalist. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse. His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality.  Born on Long Island, Whitman worked as a journalist, a teacher, a government clerk, and – in addition to publishing his poetry – was a volunteer nurse during the American Civil War. Early in his career, he also produced a temperance novel, Franklin Evans (1842). Whitman's major work, Leaves of Grass, was first published in 1855 with his own money. The work was an attempt at reaching out to the common person with an American epic. He continued expanding and revising it until his death in 1892. After a stroke towards the end of his life, he moved to Camden, New Jersey, where his health further declined. He died at age 72 and his funeral became a public spectacle.  Whitman's sexuality is often discussed alongside his poetry. Though biographers continue to debate his sexuality, he is usually described as either homosexual or bisexual in his feelings and attractions. However, there is disagreement among biographers as to whether Whitman had actual sexual experiences with men. Whitman was concerned with politics throughout...

Phil Literature

...PHILIPPINE LITERATURE Philippine literature is the body of works, both oral and written, that Filipinos, whether native, naturalized, or foreign born, have created about the experience of people living in or relating to Philippine society. It is composed or written in any of the Philippine languages, in Spanish and in English, and in Chinese as well. Philippine literature may be produced in the capital city of Manila and in the different urban centers and rural outposts, even in foreign lands where descendants of Filipino migrants use English or any of the languages of the Philippines to create works that tell about their lives and aspirations. The forms used by Filipino authors may be indigenous or borrowed from other cultures, and these may range from popular pieces addressed to mass audiences to highly sophisticated works intended for the intellectual elite. Having gone through two colonial regimes, the Philippines has manifested the cultural influences of the Spanish and American colonial powers in its literary production. Works may be grouped according to the dominant tradition or traditions operative in them. The first grouping belongs to the ethnic tradition, which comprises oral lore identifiably precolonial in provenance and works that circulate within contemporary communities of tribal Filipinos, or among lowland Filipinos that have maintained their links with the culture of their non-Islamic or non-Christian ancestors. The second grouping consists of works that show...
