Hugo: Oscar Award Winning Film Hugo, released on November 23, 2011, was directed and co-produced by Martin Scorsese alongside with cinematographer, Bob Richardson. This was the first adventure drama film shot in 3D by Scorsese and it was a success all around. He decided to shoot in 3D because he wanted to give the audience a feeling as if they were “in” the film and right there with the characters. Scorsese said, “I found 3D to be really interesting, because the actors were more upfront emotionally. Their slightest move, their slightest intention is picked up much more precisely” (Cadwell). In 2012, during the 84th Academy Awards, Hugo won five Oscars. These included the following, Best Cinematography, Art Direction, Visual Effects, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing. This ties back to the documentary, “The Visions of Light.” This documentary focuses on the many different films in the past and how they were able to shoot the films (Visions). It provides an overview of the history of cinematography that focuses mainly on some of the greatest visual achievements. They interview multiple screenwriters and critics including Ernest Dickerson, Gordon Willis, John Bailey, Charles B. Lang, and many others (Visions). These people talk about their favorite cinematographers, the history behind their own films and the techniques they used (Visions). In order to help bring Hugo to life, Scorsese called in a man named Rob Legato. He was the film’s effects supervisor and stated, “The whole film really is celebrating persistence of vision, and what it meant to early filmmakers, and the film is so rich with homage and appreciate of that”
