A library is a treasure-house of knowledge. A well-stocked library is an asset to the school, college, university or the neighbourhood. A library has a librarian to guide and attend to the readers. In KDU University College, the library has been a place where student tend to spend most of their time doing their assignments, completing their homework and also spend time on leisure reading. This well occupied library has been through a renovation lately where there is more reading space and also more books. The college library management has been done manually and not computerised. They have opened suggestions to the student where they can give out suggestion on which hardware and software can be used for our college library. As most of the library in colleges and public library tend to use computerised system for the management purpose has been making things easy and effective for the librarian to do their job.

The type of hardware that I would suggest that would be fundamental for a library system would be definitely the system unit, the monitor, the keyboard, the mouse and a printer. A system unit with a business user specification would be prefect for this usage. In detail, Server or PC with i5 Processor, Windows 7, a 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB of fast DDR3 RAM memory, and a LCD display. Hardware which would be even necessary would be like the finger print reader where this can used to scan and read finger print of students who want to borrow books just have to place their finger to be scanned as their details and data would appear in the monitor’s screen of the librarian. This would be necessary as scanning wouldn’t take a very long time and its even precise compared to filing data manually. The only disadvantage of using the deivce would be where if the if the finger is dirty or injured the reader cant read its print. A smart card reader would also do the same functions of the finger print reader as the students can just scan the card to access in the library and borrow books. Another disadvantage of using this device would be where smart cards are not that durable and fragile. This makes the card to be spoiled and cant be read by the card reader. Furthermore, Laser or inkjet printer with the ability to copy document, fax, and also scan will be very useful as its together in an all in one device. This would also reduce space in terms of getting the device separately which would also cost more and help the librarians to work more effectively. But there is a disadvantage in it where the features cant be used together at one time. On the hand, a projector which can be placed in the audio visual room will be even more sufficient and user friendly compared to using an OHP projector. Internet router and DSL modem would be needed for the vast internet connection for necessity for the students use the feature of e library and also data pooling. The librarians would also need internet for the use of uploading data and to check emails. Barcode labels will be needed in a library to have smooth check-in and checkout of library items, in addition to the easy inventory of circulating items. Barcode labels on student cards then scan the label for fast access to a student's account during the checkout process.
The type of basic software that can be used in a library system would be Microsoft Excel where it allows one to insert a vast amount of data, including numbers via equations in a simplified, effective, and fast way. This makes thing to be more reliable, fast, and easy. The disadvantage of using Microsoft excel would be it is not something that you can use easily, and you need to have experience and prior knowledge. Microsoft Word would be also basic software which will be needed and a nesicity of using as it will be used for word processing as an example to write letters. The advantage of using this would be the adaptability and the editing document capability of it. As a library needs a database management for its input and output of data, the suitable software that can be used to manage this would be Oracle. Oracle is software where its SQL-based database supports distributed corporate databases, enabling the user to access data locally or from remote databases in a transparent transaction. The disadvantage of using Oracle as a database management is Oracle price is higher and charge you 22% support/maintenance every year. The advantages would be Oracle runs on many platforms. SQL Server only runs on Windows. To go more on specific management of library where in terms customization can be done such as development of a new workflow to accommodate extra dialogues or special circumstances and customised reports there a other software that are meant to be used for library which is also known as Intergrated library system (ILS). The modules which are available is acquisitions, cataloguing, circulation, serials, and OPAC. Each item has a unique ID in the database that allows the ILS to track its activity. The major advantage of the system is it improves user experience by extending borrowing methods.
