THESIS: In Oedipus the King by Sophocles, Creon acts as the foil for Oedipus through his constant yearning for power and a logical attitude compared to Oedipus’ contrasted viewpoints, respect for the citizens of Thebes and a religious attitude.

PARAGRAPHICAL ASSERTION #1: Creon wanted to gain power whereas Oedipus’s main goal was to relieve his subjects from problems they might encounter.

PARAGRAPHICAL ASSERTION #2: Having belief in destiny represented by Oedipus is viewed as the counter to a logical attitude like Creon’s.

Having belief in destiny represented by Oedipus is viewed as the counter to a logical attitude like Creon’s. Even though Oedipus rudely jumps to the conclusion that Creon is “ a false friend” Creon responds calmly with

Oedipus The King Bully Essay

...At first the shepherd refuses to speak, but then he was threatened to be killed. He informs him that Jocasta and Lauis or Oedipus’ biological parents. So, in spite of his safety measures, the fate came to be true . when he found out that he married his mother and killed his father, Oedipus is tormented by his fate. He later finds out that Jocasta killed herself. Oedipus grabs the needles from her gown and gouges out his eyeballs, so that he will never see what he has done. Now blinded Oedipus begs Creon to kill him, but as the play finishes, he submits to Creon's leadership, and waits for the oracle that will make the decision if he will reside in Thebes or be leave permanently.. So now one should analyze how Oedipus showed signs of revenge throughout the play. It may sound awkward or funny but one can say that Oedipus took revenge out on his self by gouging out his eyes for the actions he committed like killing his father and having an incestuous relationship with his own mother. Oedipus says, “You, you'll see no more the pain I suffered, all the pain I caused! Too long you looked on the ones you never should have seen, blind to the ones you longed to see, to know! Blind...

Literary Devices

...details imply a secondary meaning. Allegory often takes the form of a story in which the characters represent moral qualities. The most famous example in English is John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, in which the name of the central character, Pilgrim, epitomizes the book's allegorical nature. Kay Boyle's story "Astronomer's Wife" and Christina Rossetti's poem "Up-Hill" both contain allegorical elements. Alliteration The repetition of consonant sounds, especially at the beginning of words. Example: "Fetched fresh, as I suppose, off some sweet wood." Hopkins, "In the Valley of the Elwy." Antagonist A character or force against which another character struggles. Creon is Antigone's antagonist in Sophocles' play Antigone; Teiresias is the antagonist of Oedipus in Sophocles' Oedipus the King. Assonance The repetition of similar vowel sounds in a sentence or a line of poetry or prose, as in "I rose and told him of my woe." Whitman's "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer" contains assonantal "I's" in the following lines: "How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick, / Till rising and gliding out I wander'd off by myself." Character An imaginary person that inhabits a literary work. Literary characters may be major or minor, static (unchanging) or dynamic (capable of change). In Shakespeare's Othello, Desdemona is a major character, but one who is static, like the minor character Bianca. Othello is a major character who is dynamic, exhibiting an ability to change. Enormity Of Death In Antigone

...How much must a person endure in the face of pain? Loss? Suffering? Loss of a father? Death of both of the brothers at each other's hands? This enormity of death deeply influences the characters' rationales and actions in the play Antigone by Sophocles. Each character behaves in extremes due to his or her unfathomable anguish. Neither Antigone, Haimon, nor Creon act with reason because of their intense personal losses and grief. Unfortunately, both extreme passion and radical reasoning manifest serious tragedy. Antigone, the protagonist of the play, lives with her father’s banishment and the death of her two brothers in a civil war. To add to the torment of the death of her brother, Polynieces, a decree passed by Antigone's uncle, Creon,...

Narrative

...Narrative A narrative is a sequence of events that a narrator tells in story form. A narrator is a storyteller of any kind, whether the authorial voice in a novel or a friend telling you about last night’s party. Point of View The point of view is the perspective that a narrative takes toward the events it describes. First-person narration: A narrative in which the narrator tells the story from his/her own point of view and refers to him/herself as “I.” The narrator may be an active participant in the story or just an observer. When the point of view represented is specifically the author’s, and not a fictional narrator’s, the story is autobiographical and may be nonfictional (see Common Literary Forms and Genres below). Third-person narration: The narrator remains outside the story and describes the characters in the story using proper names and the third-person pronouns “he,” “she,” “it,” and “they.” • Omniscient narration: The narrator knows all of the actions, feelings, and motivations of all of the characters. For example, the narrator of Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina seems to know everything about all the characters and events in the story. • Limited omniscient narration: The narrator knows the actions, feelings, and motivations of only one or a handful of characters. For example, the narrator of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has full knowledge of only Alice. • Free indirect discourse: The narrator conveys a character’s inner thoughts...
