...In a country as wealthy as Canada, close to one million people continue to rely on food banks to provide themselves with basic necessities each month. Food Banks are used by a wide variety of people within Canada, ranging from children and families, to single people, to even individuals who are employed. People tend to use food banks because they are not able to maintain a healthy lifestyle on their own. Whether it is because of economic, social, or cultural reasons, many people have no other option but to do so. I have determined that the main cause of an increase in food bank usage in Canada is poverty. Within Canada, poverty has been an ever-present issue for many years. Although Canada is rated eighth on the Human Development Index, there continues to be a growing number of impoverished people. Individuals who are not able to provide themselves with the basic necessities of life are at an incredible disadvantage when it comes to maintaining their health and well-being. They can be exposed to many illnesses and life threats because they are not able to provide themselves with the resources needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Things such as food, shelter, and warmth all become optional for an individual living in poverty as they have little opportunity to better their life or living situations. Factors such as housing, education, employment, and environment are all equally important in determining an individuals economic standing. Specific groups such as Aboriginals can...

...Perhaps everyone agrees with the opinion that hunger is one of the greatest and most outstanding problems of the contemporary world. The images of a child's bloated belly or of a mother searching through rubble in the hopes of finding food are ones that have long haunted our world and that must be changed immediately. Hunger, malnutrition, and poverty infiltrate on a vast majority of the people on the planet and many individuals are affected by these preventable causes. It is time not to just speak out against world hunger but to do something about it. In Canada, the issue of malnutrition is quickly escalating as more and more individuals are experiencing hunger by having little or no food in their presence. HungerCount 2013, a comprehensive report on hunger and food bank usage in Canada shows several detailed findings of dilemmas Canadians are currently experiencing. During a time of apparent economic recovery, far too many Canadians are still struggling to put food on the table. The report explains issues that Canadians are experiencing and seeks address the root causes and provide solutions. There are many inter-connected issues causing hunger and poverty. For instance, low income is one of the most prominent causes since Canada has lost hundreds of thousands well paying jobs over the past 30 years. Manufacturing has fled to other parts of the world where products can be made at a significantly lower cost (Pegg, 2013). The jobs that have replaced them are most likely to be...

Food is one of the basic human rights referenced in Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted in 1948, it states that “The right to food is the right of every individual, alone or in community with others, to have physical and economic access at all times to sufficient, adequate and culturally acceptable food produced and consumed sustainably, preserving access to food for future generations.” Over 50 years later, however, and hunger remains a prevalent issue throughout many first world countries, including...

...Background Richard Loat, founder of the non-profit organization, Five Hole for Food, begins his successful operation in 2010, in an effort to raise food donations for the Food Banks in Canada. His initial idea of organizing street hockey games on a cross-Canada road trip tour using online social media and volunteers, with the goal of gaining food donations to benefit the Food Banks in various cities along his journey proves to be successful. Much to his surprise, his adventure turns out to be, not only lucrative and rewarding; it becomes an opportunity to raise awareness for the growing cause of people in need. He goes on to his second year, gaining momentum with sponsors, volunteers, support for the games and most of all, food donations which greatly exceeds their expectations. The remarkable reputation of Loat and his talent for continued success in gaining help on a volunteer basis via his internet network, as well as 100% of the donations going directly to the Food Bank, leads them to find ways of perpetuating the organization. Problem With the full responsibility of organizing and operating Five Hole for Food, Loat becomes concerned with the fate of his charity and looks for ways to perpetuate the cause without compromising his grassroots basis. He looks at options for future success of the organization where his legacy can continue on a volunteer basis, with the majority of donations going to those in need, along with for ways to keep up with increasing demands for expansion...

...Food pantries greatly serve to those in need, but their contributions to the famished are questionable. Hunger has always been an issue. Not only in the U.S but also worldwide. Ever since the world’s first food pantry, great amounts of people have expressed their concerns about the validity and value of them. Getting political acceptance from the left and right, the idea of having a low income and access to food through an organization is fine, right? This is where the catch of it all initiates. There is a reason why countries like Canada and the U.K determine food pantries as a public policy, and not as a means of helping those who suffer from lack of food. It is because most food pantries in those countries are ubiquitous and only required...

...When individuals are advocating for the abolition of food banks, naturally it gives one reason to pause; it portrays the advocate as unsympathetic, callous and cruel. However, after carefully consideration it appears the reasons are justified. Abolition is not the primary concern; it is the delivery! Should food be edible waste provide by corporations? Or government funded options, like safe farming techniques, or a livable wage to choose healthy culturally acceptable options? Poppendieck (1994) outlined a detailed history of the emergency food system; whose journey began a temporary measure and has now become a staple in our society to supplement a recurring issue. Food is a basic human rights referenced in Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted in 1948, it states that “….The right to food is the right of every individual, alone or in community with others, to have physical and...

...RECOMMENDATION We recommend that DragonCare Ltd expand its footprint to Canada through a fully owned subsidiary by the name of “DragonCare Canada Ltd”. Awareness of alternative health medicine is increasing rapidly in Canada. The Canadian Natural Health Products (NHP) industry (Market Size: $2620 million), of which the herbal medicines have a 40% share (Market Size: $1048 million), is growing at 20% annually. The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) segment in particular is highly fragmented with no major brand in the marketplace. Market share of none of the current players exceeds 5%. In this respect, the market condition in Canada is similar to what exists in DragonCare’s current markets and provides DragonCare a good opportunity to create a niche for itself by building a brand on the strength of its scientific research capabilities and experience of operating in such markets. ------------------------------------------------- ROLL OUT STRATEGY DragonCare Canada should employ a phased approach in introducing its products, its geographic expansion in Canada and introduction of its full value proposition to the Canadian customers. DragonCare should enter Canada with two patented women’s healthcare products preferably for nutritional benefits & immunity development which have the highest demand in Canada. The strategy is to develop these products as DragonCare’s “Flagship” products in Canada. Introduction of other products will be after the “DragonCare Brand” is established...

...Food Wastage At the moment, it is hard to tell whether the world has sufficient food supplies or not. Most of developed countries claim to have people who are still not able to access food while at the same time, still report of more food wastage than the third world, developing nations. That indicates a big mishap in the food cycle as it so happens that most of the food either finds itself in the dumpster or on the plates of the very rich. China, USA, Canada, South Eastern Asia, and Europe have been amongst the countries hit by this storm of food wasting. While Britain is said to be throwing away about thirteen pounds of food per week, Canada is struggling with same problem. The United States is not spared either. Food and Agriculture Organization, abbreviation as FAO says that about a third of the world produce is wasted. By 2007, FAO projected that the increase ought to have gone high by sixty percent so that the emerging wealthier generation could be fed totally. While people could focus on increasing production, it is worth noting that reducing the amount of food waste in most cases would see to the situation being placed under comtrol, albeit for a bit (Barclay, 2014). Globally, around 1.3 billion ton of food goes to waste. Food is wasted from initial agricultural production, all the way to the final household consumption. The medium and high income countries are the leaders in the food wasting melee. Food is thrown away despite being still suitable for human consumption...
