FOOD-BORNE OUTBREAK Fresno County has recently experienced a major outbreak in food-borne illnesses. Most of the county residents have been hospitalized with severe flu like symptoms. These residents have been complaining about severe stomach pains, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness. Some had a very high fever that caused them to become hospitalized. The hospital is advising everyone to take the proper food safety, handling, and purchasing steps to prevent any more cases from arising. These steps would include keeping up on the latest safety recalls, washing hands before and after handling any meats, and washing all utensils right away after they have been used. Residents can check for local recalls by going online or checking the local newspapers daily. Sometimes a recall only impacts a small amount of food. Inspecting your meat for the proper coloring and looking for visible signs of dirt are another way of prevention, as well as washing all fresh vegetables and cooking them thoroughly before consumption. Avoid sharing utensils, knives, and cutting boards when you are cooking with meats and vegetables. You must thoroughly wash each item before using it on something different or use a different utensil all together. According to the California Department of Health 48 million people get sick, 128,000 people end up hospitalized, and 3,000 people die from food-borne diseases in the United States every year. They say that the cause of these statistics are from toxins and bacteria’s, viruses, chemicals, and parasites. The California Department of Health have public officials that try to prevent and control outbreaks. They advise the public to take multiple measures to prevent and control outbreaks

Due to outbreaks of infectious disease in honey bees and amphibians, the use of systematic insecticides has significantly increased over the last 20 years (Mason et al., 2012). And is now thought to be the preferred choice; because of their toxicity and mechanistic action. One type, in particular, seen to show a usage increase is – neonicotinoids - a class of agrochemicals derived from nicotine (a substance found in cigarettes). It is thought this derivative form is solely based on the chemical similarity of the two (Calderon-Segura et al., 2012). First introduced within the 1990’s, neonicotinoids were principally used for their systematic nature. While most insecticides are placed on the surfaces of yielding crops, neonicotinoids are taken up by the roots and translocated to separate areas. This, therefore, makes the plant toxic to certain insect species (Pisa et al., 2014).
