A Crappy Diet When you walk into a grocery store, you are overwhelmed by the many isles fully stocked with every type of food you can think of. However, what the grocery stores do not want you to know is the process that food went through to be nicely packaged and ready for you to consume. It makes perfect sense why they would not want us to question such a thing. Why? Because food industries are hiding from us the immoral and vulgar ways they supply us with the food that we eat everyday. http://www.cbc.ca/passionateeye/episodes/food-inc

Directed by Emmy winner Robert Kenner, Food, Inc. is a documentary filmed in 2008 with the purpose of exposing the real facts and hidden secrets behind the food …show more content…
From industrial feedlots where millions of cruelly crammed animals scurry about in their own waste until slaughter, to the slaughterhouses where thousands of animals are killed, it is jaw dropping to see how this is what we consume everyday. These segments use a form of pathos to connect with our emotions by showing us sounds, stories, and images of the cruelty towards animals, just so we can peacefully eat a cheeseburger when we are hungry. Images of massive, darkened industrial houses show the cruelty of the animals being farmed there. Also, the film shows an interview of a heartbroken mother whose son had died from eating food that was infected with the E. coli bacteria. When she was asked about her sons death, she proclaimed, “To watch this beautiful child go from being perfectly healthy to dead in 12 days-- it was just unbelievable that this could happen from eating food.” (Food, Inc.) This use of pathos makes us viewers feel scared that this could happen to anyone at anytime, and portrays that there is a serious problem in the food

Film Analysis: Food Inc.

...Food Inc. is a very eye opening documentary to the American way of eating and even the American way of life. The investigative journalist Robert Kenner really digs deep behind the reasons why Americans have become so distanced from the source of their food. It is interesting to see to what extent large corporations control the American economy to the point of deciding what lands on the dinner plate of the lower class families. The interests of the people have become the veil of the interest of the large food pharmaceutical and oil corporations. The documentary shows quite interestingly how the large corporation’s lobbyists want to “protect” the people by furthering the people from the food and by making it tougher for the small family farms...

Film Analysis: Food Inc.

...Food Inc. was undoubtedly the most effective to convince me to change all my habits that involve food. Food Inc. displayed images and footage of how the mass food production industry really is. This industry is absolutely disgusting and disturbing. Massive herds of cattle born in a factory just to be fattened and slaughtered. The film showed how the big meat and other kinds of everyday food industries bully farmers into doing whatever the corporations want. The film reveals the corruptive and elusive tactics of these industries through their lawsuits and contracts. The film displays the food industry for what it is; a mob like business. The film shows the conditions of the mass product farms for different products alike. Animals being the...

Film Analysis: Food, Inc.

...One argument presented in Food, Inc. is that consumers need to be educated about the cruelty that animals experience on a daily basis in the food industry. The documentary speaks to the point that the structure of the food industry has gone through many changes over the years. There has been an increase in animal population and a drastic decrease in the number of farms this population lives on. The process of taking the food from the farms and getting it to consumers is owned by a small group of multinational corporations who are continuing to gain more control (Food, Inc.). In the 1960s and 70s, traditional farming turned into factory farming. This meant that animals would now be produced in “large numbers by large-scale operations” and mass...

Film Analysis: Food Inc.

...During the documentary Food Inc., Joel Salatin made the statement of “If we put glass walls on all the mega-processing facilities, we would have a different food system in this country”. Today, I’m going to tell you what he means by that and what my opinion on the statement is. What he meant by this statement was that people have no idea how their food is being made and what is being put in it. Also, people don’t realize how the animals are being treated. If something is out of site, it is out of mind. Meaning they don’t think about things like that because they can’t see it. I believe this statement is very accurate. If more people watched the documentary, or even read the book Fast Food Nation, I believe that more people are going to...

Analysis Of The Documentary Film Food, Inc.

...Food, Inc. is a documentary film that explains how food production is occurring today. That film shows how these practices are unsustainable and unhealthy to consumers. The whole process of production contributes to an ever growing obese America. This documentary advocates for the change of food production in order to keep America from becoming too unhealthy. This documentary has changed my view a lot of factory farmed food. I look at food differently now, and that was eyes opening for me. Factory farms increase the risk of pathogens like E. coli that cause foodborne illness in people. Chickens, beef, and hogs on factory farms have no access to the outdoors, fresh air or natural light. I think I need to avoid the products of factory farms after...

Social Concepts Paper

...Films mimic the human experience in a way that other visual mediums cannot. Cinema’s basis in fiction and fact is what makes for an excellent lens through which to view the human experience. Over the course of the semester, we were instructed to watch two films. “Food Inc.”, a harsh look inside America’s corporate controlled food Industry, while “The Vernon John’s Story: The Road to Freedom” is a film that portrays the inspirational story of Martin Luther King Jrs’ successor as he interminably campaigns for Civil Rights. While seemingly different themes, each film portrays two issues important in sociology. After all, sociology can be defined as the scientific study of human social behavior and its origins, development, and organizations. Sociologists use many ways to analyze subjects from a sociological perspective. These ways are known today as the symbolic interactionist perspective, the functionalist perspective, and the conflict perspective. Each perspective uniquely conceptualizes society, social forces, and human behavior. The purpose of this essay is not so much as to narrate each film but rather to illustrate a better understanding for three commonly misunderstood perspectives. Although a daily occurrence, the consumption of food can also be associated with important moments in our lives. In the context of society, our nation’s food system is at the core of numerous social movements, political issues, and economic debates. After watching “Food Inc.”, we see that any...

The Hunger Games

...in which boys and girls, two from each of twelve districts, are forced to murder each other until only one is left. In 2012, director Gary Ross adapted Collins’ book into a film. On the surface, both the book and the film version of The Hunger Games seem to be just a form of entertainment. However, if one interprets the two analytically, they are criticizing the inequalities and power abuse in our own capitalist society. Capitalism creates wealth and power inequalities, often leading to the rich abusing the poor. In The Hunger Games, the rich entertain themselves with the blood battle of the poor. Though Ross conveys the inequalities and power abuse mentioned in the book, he also adapts some scenes to make this message easier for the audience to understand. While Collins heavily relies on detailed descriptions and Katniss’ narration to give the message that capitalism forms inequalities and power abuse, Ross uses more visual contrasts to make the film more appealing while portraying the same message. Inequalities in Panem can be vividly seen in the differences in food, clothing and housing between the rich Capitol and the desolate District 12 in both the book and the film. Collins use clear descriptions to portray these discrepancies in capitalism while Ross exposes the inequalities visually in the film. The father of the protagonist, Katniss, used to hunt in the woods and “if the officials found out he would have been publicly executed for inciting a rebellion” (Collins 5)...

...through the lens of Karl Marx Disney’s Pixar film, A Bug’s Life, is much more than meets the eye. The film is not only an animated comedy; it holds deep sociological theory within its plot. Many of the major themes and concepts of the movie can be viewed through the lens of the famous theorist Karl Marx. Marx’s theory is famous for focusing on how society functions. In particular he concerns himself with how capitalism, the working class, and the revolutions create problems in our society. My paper will analyze how Marxian theory and concepts fit into major climactic scenes of the film. The film revolves around the protagonist Filk, a worker ant. The colony is being oppressed by a group of grasshoppers and their leader Hopper. The grasshoppers claim they will provide protection as long as the ants provide the food supply. When the ants cannot supply the food for the grasshoppers, Hopper demands the ants to produce twice as much food as they did before. As a result, the ants will not have enough food to store up for themselves. Filk then travels to recruit warrior bugs to help the ants fight off the grasshoppers. According to Marx, this would free the colony from the constant oppression of the grasshoppers. The major themes of the movie follow Marxian theory. The first relates to Hopper and how the grasshoppers abuse their power and exploit the ant colony. The grasshoppers expect food knowing that the ants cannot produce enough food for themselves and the grasshoppers to consume...

Food Packaging & Envrronmental Effect

...JFS R: Concise Reviews/Hypotheses in Food Science Food Packaging—Roles, Materials, and Environmental Issues KENNETH MARSH, PH.D., AND BETTY BUGUSU, PH.D. The Institute of Food Technologists has issued this Scientific Status Summary to update readers on food packaging and its impact on the environment. Keywords: food packaging, food processing dvances in food processing and food packaging play a primary role in keeping the U.S. food supply among the safest in the world. Simply stated, packaging maintains the benefits of food processing after the process is complete, enabling foods to travel safely for long distances from their point of origin and still be wholesome at the time of consumption. However, packaging technology must balance food protection with other issues, including energy and material costs, heightened social and environmental consciousness, and strict regulations on pollutants and disposal of municipal solid waste. Municipal solid waste (MSW) consists of items commonly thrown away, including packages, food scraps, yard trimmings, and durable items such as refrigerators and computers. Legislative and regulatory efforts to control packaging are based on the mistaken perception that packaging is the major burden of MSW. Instead, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that approximately only 31% of the MSW generated in 2005 was from packaging-related materials, including glass, metal, plastic, paper, and paperboard—a percentage that has remained...
