Producers should be honest with their consumers, but most of the time they aren’t. Most companies aren't honest with how they run things. This is because it can hurt the business. In an excerpt from Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle there were rats that would go into to hoppers with the meat. If the company let the people know, not as many people would buy their meat from them. Companies should run things so when they're honest it won't hurt them. Not being honest with the consumers and not keeping everything to certain standards isn’t right and can actually hurt the company if something happens with one of their products. In the documentary Food Inc Michael Pollan, author of the omnivore's dilemma, says of E coli is a product of the diet were feeding

Rhetorical Analysis Of Food Inc.

...When watching the film Food Inc., one can examine film and identify the three components of a claim in the film- the grounds, warrants, and conclusions to the argument are all explicitly featured and given expansive detail. Through the use of case studies and typifying examples, director Robert Kenner is able to send a message to the audience about how real the problem is- industrialization of the food industry is killing consumers and the world that we live in, and Kenner offers ways in which we can change the conditions “one bite at a time.” Firstly, Kenner makes claims at the beginning of the film. In doing so he employs several forms of rhetorical devices- typifying examples, statistics, and the identification of people affected are...

...of evidence to support my claims, ideas and arguments. This class was very helpful in showing how to take research and incorporate it into a project. Overall, this class has allowed me to strengthen my skills as a reviser, helped me “formulate and articulate a stance through my writing”, and helped me to use more forms of evidence to support my claims, ideas and arguments. Project 1 was the simplest of the four projects. I decided to analyze a research article on Marketing and how companies have started to move their businesses into developing nations. At first I didn’t think I would be able to write a rhetorical analysis on this article because of its length but after multiple revisions and help from peers I wrote my final draft. This was the one project where the revisions really helped me grow as a writer. Without these revisions I would have written a terrible analysis because I had no idea how to explain the ideas in the article because it was so short. My peers gave me guidance and used their papers to help formulate my own paper. Prior to this assignment I had written papers detailing articles read but I had never done so with such a short piece. It was hard to fit enough words into the paper without sounding...

...in the 1990s by reframing the problem of the natural environment as one of sustainable development. In the wake of this reframing, a new practice in environmental management emerged - that of green alliances or partnerships between business and ecology groups (Westley & Vredenburg, 1991, pp. 71-72). These alliances, considered one of the ten most significant trends in environmental management and the greening of industry (Gladwin, 1993, p. 46), appeared to signal a sea change in the way business, as well as environmentalists, could respond to the ecological impacts of firms' economic activities. Indeed, environmental partnerships offered both business and ecology groups the potential for a new rhetorical stance. Business communication scholarship has identified a variety of rhetorical strategies adopted by corporations in the face of environmental controversy: defensiveness and apologia (e.g., Ice, 1991; Tyler, 1992), competing information campaigns (e.g., Lange, 1993; Moore, 1993), or retreat (e.g., Seiter, 1995). Green alliances provide business with an alternative to these strategies. Through eco-partnership, a firm can adopt, at both material and symbolic levels, a proactive approach toward the natural environment; its posture vis-a-vis environmentalists, or at least a wing of the environmental movement, can be collaborative rather than conflictual. On the other hand, green alliances offer...

Theodora Roosevelt

...Theodore Roosevelt, “A Multifaceted Man” As a foreigner to the United States of America, I have recently studied the lives and leadership skills of American presidents from George Washington to current presidency and I found Theodore Roosevelt as the most productive and intriguing of them all. A man that was very hardworking, diligent, focus and prepared for everything he did. Who is Theodore Roosevelt? A person with such incredible character and quality, selfless personality, concerned about the situation of less privilege people and those not in the position of authority or power. He had a very peculiar childhood. According to Encyclopedia of World Biography, “Roosevelt was born in New York City on Oct. 27, 1858. His father was of an old Dutch mercantile family long prominent in the city's affairs. His mother came from an established Georgia family of Scotch-Irish and Huguenot ancestry. A buoyant, dominant figure, his father was the only man, young Roosevelt once said, he "ever feared." He imbued his son with an acute sense of civic responsibility and an attitude of noblesse oblige. Partly because of a severe asthmatic condition, Theodore was educated by private tutors until 1876, when he entered Harvard College. Abandoning plans to become a naturalist, he developed political and historical interests, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and finished twenty-first in a class of 158. He also began writing The Naval War of 1812 (1882), a work of limited range but high technical...

The saying - We are what we eat; transforms genetically modified food into an unknown threat to our health in the case of GM food. The result is that when our source of nutrition is modified - controversies arise. This becomes apparent when investigating the GM-food debate; a controversial issue that has attracted attention in both media and public opinion.[footnoteRef:1] [1: Genetically Modified, because of rapid developments within the biotechnology-industry such as the CRIPSR-Cas9 system, GMOs are making major scientific advancements. ] One way of obtaining information about GM-food is by watching documentaries. They are presumed to be unbiased and truthful, a reliable source of information on the subject. However, the content of a documentary is generally chosen in order to make the message it wants to convey most convincing. The success of a documentary in conveying the message is determined by how credible it is perceived to be. According to Spence et al. in Crafting...

...Persuasive communications The European commission have recently released there latest figures reviling UK women are the fattest in Europe. Obesity rates have been on a slow climb for the last 10 years which is why it has become one of the NHS main focuses. According BBC health, “Obesity is caused by two simple factors - an unhealthy diet (typically too rich in sugar and fats and not enough fibre and carbohydrate) and not doing enough exercise to burn off the calories consumed.” In 2009, 16% of boys aged 2 to 15, and 15% of girls were classed as obese between the ages of 2-15 The Health and Social Care Information Centre. This large percentage of obesity amongst children needs to be addressed before it become out of hand acceptable in society. This issue does need to be tackled to stop the growth of obesity not only to save money but lives too. A Tale of Two Steves

...A Tale of Two Steves 1 A Tale of Two Steves Joanne Greene-Blose Boston University AD643 Project Communications Professor Steve Leybourne A Tale of Two Steves 2 Joanne Greene-Blose Abstract Good leadership is key, particularly in today‟s competitive global economy, and can make the difference between the success or the failure of the organization (Bennett, 2009). This paper looks at the CEO of the top tech company in the world, Apple Inc., and analyzes his leadership style. Steve Jobs, as Jack Welch called (Elkind, 2008), “the most successful CEO today” exhibits characteristics of both transactional and transformational leadership styles. He can be perhaps best labeled as a composite of both. He possesses micromanagement tendencies, is quick to judge, frequently yells and berates his employees, and reduces them to tears. Yet he also inspires a transcending vision who can connect emotionally with both his customer base and employees (Fannin, 2005; “Transformational Leadership”, 2002). Jobs is unquestionably an enigmatic, polarizing figure – yet his formula for success cannot be denied. A Tale of Two Steves 3 Joanne Greene-Blose A Tale of Two Steves The importance of good leadership in today‟s environment cannot be overstated. Bennett (2009) identifies leadership as determining the ultimate success or failure of the organization and Ismail, Mohamed, Sulaiman, Mohamad, and Yusuf (2011) view it as the primary force in determining competitiveness in a global...

Figurative Language

...1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Figurative language has been widely examined by linguist in the study of literature in recent years. It is because figurative language has the essence of style and beauty. Figurative language often provides a more effective means of saying what we mean than direct statement. In the specific sense, figurative language may take the form of figures of speech. Figurative language is used in any form of communication, such as in daily conversation, articles in newspaper, advertisements, novels, poems, etc. The effectiveness of figurative language in four main reasons, Perrine (1982) First, figurative language affords readers imaginative pleasure of literary works. Second, it is a way of bringing additional imagery into verse, making the abstract concrete, making literary works more sensuous. The third, figurative is a way of adding emotional intensity to otherwise merely informative statements and conveying attitudes along with information. And the last, it is a way of saying much in brief compass. She divides figurative language into seven types, namely metaphor, simile, personification, metonymy, paradox, overstatement, understatement, irony and illusion. 2 Keraf (1998: 129) divided majas (figures of speech) into two classifications, namely majas retoris (rhetoric) and majas kiasan (analogy). The first classification covers illiteracy, assonances, anastrophe, apophasis, apostrophe, asyndeton, polycyndenton, chiasmus, ellipsis...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
